You need to start memorizing where they spawn.
Some are in retarded places where you need double or triple jump to reach with non-warping characters

It's the newt shrines that cause that. They spawn in a few select places on each map. You can easily memorize them, the only issue is having enough coins or getting to them before someone triggers the boss fight.

That was lunar bud not an altar. Portals sometimes appear randomly but it's a rare event.
