i played both S/M and US/UM, the latter is way better but still a crap game overall. story is shit, pacing is dogshit. the game takes you by the hand literally every single moment in your life.
everything is restricted and when you're finally done and want to explore something you left behind...you find absolutely NOTHING at all. there are no classic dungeons, no secrets to explore. jsut a shallow husk of a game, sadly.
the only saving grace is the amount of pokemon you can catch and train there with a ton of attack teacher around

the issue with gen 5 was it was released so late into the ds' life span that it was doomed to fail. bw1 were good but the dream world lasted like 10 months. then fucking bw2 had less than 5 months of gts. they also had horrible marketing, and dare i say no touko.

the designs, some of them were bad, but nothing else was bad about it.

Gen 7 was dogshit, m8. The absolute worst opening of any pokemon game, where you're forced to sit through constant interruptions and cutscenes for the first like 3 HOURS before really getting to do anything. And even after that, it's still trash. There's no exploration, all the route are just straight lines with some patches of grass. And they keep trying to make the pokemon games more "cinematic" and story-driven even though GF is terrible at doing this, and the plot in a pokemon game should be like in porn: have it there, but make it inoffensive and keep it out of the way.

USUM is almost identical to SM outside the endgame, and doesn't even bother to fix the awful cutscenes. Most of Nintendo's output on 3DS since 2016 has been remakes or ports, but USUM was just shameless
