Super metroid

> Ori and the Blind Forest
> Iconoclasts
> Salt and Sanctuary
> Any of the actual Metroid games, especially Prime 1
Don't fall for the Hollow Knight meme, it's a big stinky shit with fuckawful controls.

Hollow Knight
Ghost 1.0

>Ori and the Blind Forest

Always thought that this was a regular plataform game, going to check it out.

Guacamelee

If you want something extremely similar to Bloodstained, the same soul system and everything
>Aria of Sorrow
>Dawn of Sorrow

If you want more good Metroidvanias
>Symphony of the Night
>Portrait of Ruin

Something more linear
>Order of Ecclesia

Something with more Metroid exploration and less RPG elements
>Super Metroid
>Metroid Fusion
>Metroid Zero Mission
>Metroid Prime
>Hollow Knight

>Iconoclasts
Fuck no, it's just as awful as Owlboy.

This guy gets it.

Don’t get baited by this guy. Ori is a boring slog and the only thing going for it is visuals. Salt and Sanctuary has the worst art I’ve ever seen in a game and plays like shit. Hollow Knight has perfect controls as long as you have any form of controller

>Always thought that this was a regular plataform game
It is.

Iconoclasts has a lot of soul, more than 90% of games out there. And the setpiece boss fights are excellent. I haven't played Owlboy so I'm not sure why you picked that comparison

Thanks for the insight.

I don't get it anymore.

I loved ori but it’s not even close to being as good of a game as hollow knight is. Also how are the controls bad? You’re telling me RotN has better controls??
Hollow Knight is good op don’t listen to autistic niggers

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight
Rabi-Ribi

Sweetie I'm so proud of you! I'm glad that you're showing some backbone unlike being the rest of the millennialcucks here. Now fuck off back to Metroid for the NES.

>not sure why you picked that comparison
Both games have great pixel art and literally nothing else going for them. The mediocre gameplay is interrupted by long af cutscenes every few minutes.

environmental station alpha
la mulana
portrait of ruin

Odallus is a good Classicvania/Metroidvania hybrid, to offer something that's rarely mentioned here.

Attached: odallus.jpg (856x480, 211K)

Ori has a great fluid controls with tons of fun movement abilities, which is exactly what a metroidvania should be. I never understood the complaints about S&S graphics. It looks great and the artstyle has soul. Literally the only thing people can point to is that the characters look strange, but that's an art decision that imo gives it a unique look and sets it apart from other games. Hollow Knight, on the other hand, plays like shit and has a bunch of boring samey environments.

Meant to reply to Also, pretty much any platformer released in the past decade has better controls than HK. That's how absolutely dumpster tier bad it feels. There's no sense of momentum and jumping is so unresponsive I would constantly walk off ledges I meant to jump off of

Hollow Knight
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Rabi-Ribi
Touhou Luna Nights
Shantae

You haven’t played Hollow Knight if you think it has “samey environments”. You go from the gray winding crossroads to the bright green more linear Greenpath to a more vertically designed Mushroom wasteland to either a massive open city or a pitch black cramped spider nest. The controls are fluid and allow for some of the best boss fights I’ve seen in a Metroid-like game.

Your controller or keyboard has to be fucked up. That game has extremely precise controls. How the fuck do you keep walking off of ledges? I have never seen anyone do that

I'll admit I quit after an hour or two due to the awful controls, but I saw very little environmental variety during the time I played. Or really, anything interesting thar would draw me in and get me to want to play more. It was just fucking boring, and the awful momentumless controls were the final nail in the coffin.

>Hollow Knight has perfect controls as long as you have any form of controller

Welp...

People are REALLY stretching the definition of metroidvania.

Ori is about as a metroidvania as Celeste. The combat is minimal and there are no bosses, you just do crazy moves in spike filled tunnels.

Owlboy and Iconoclasts are just story heavy platformers where you go for the next story trigger and don't really unlock any new abilities.

Did you at least get the dash?? There’s also a wall jump. The physics of a standard jump really fucked you up that bad? Jesus Christ at least play the game before you go into a thread to make 10 shit posts about it

>dash and wall jump
Wow, how exciting. It's like Mega Man on the NES or something.

Fucking hipsters I swear.

You're really gatekeeping the definition of metroidvanias. Both of those are nonlinear platformers with exploration, hidden upgrades to collect, and abilities that allow you to progress by increasing your movement and combat abilities. Ori is a quintessential Metroidvania. If you deny this you don't even understand what a Metroidvania is. Iconoclasts is at the very least a "Metroid-lite"

Have you never played the original Mega Man games?

You’re stupid and I hate you.

Yes, the physics of the standard jump is fucked up that bad. I did play the game and I hated it, that's why I'm shitposting about it. Because it's one of the most annoyingly circlejerked bad games on Yea Forums

Cave Story

It's free, just download the original version, it's the best anyway

Attached: 1561111719579.jpg (460x579, 30K)

>Ocarina of TIme and Half-Life would be metroidvanias if they were 2D pixel shit
This is what you're saying.

Zelda was name-checked as an inspiration to Symphony of the Night. Zelda isn't a platformer, though.

Ocarina of Time IS a metroidvania. Half life isn't. Not with that linear level design. There's nothing saying 3d metroidvanias can't be a thing. Prime 1 proved it can be done well

Pic related plus Castlevania Symphony of the Night are the closest you'll get to Bloodstained. No other game in the genre has the same RPG style stat progression and weapon/item variety.

Attached: Castlevania GBA DS.jpg (1024x655, 144K)

>Harmony of Dissonance
a big yike from me

Zelda obviously has an influence on all metroidvania games and half life in 2d would be wolfenstein

>metroidvania
What soes this meme word even mean when SM and SoTN have fuck all in common.
By the way, OP, go play Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Shitstained is pretty much it's inferior reskin without a single original idea added.

It's a dumb genre name. It makes a lot more sense as a counterpart to Classicvania, though, which is how I was introduced to the term years ago. I didn't hear it as a genre descriptor until much later. I don't know if that's because its genesis was in Castlevania fan-circles or if I was just late to hearing it in the broader conversation.

>2D
>Interconnected map
>New abilities that allow you to reach areas you couldn't before
>Exploration to find optional stuff
simple as

forgot:
>At least somewhat nonlinear with backtracking through previous areas being an expected thing

This except I'd argue against 2D being a requirement. 3d Metroidvanias exist with all the other traits you listed

This guy is an asshole, Hollow Knight is 11/10 tier.

Salt and Sanctuary is fine, but the art is awful, and its pretty hard to find your way around, there is no map at all. Its functionally 2D dark souls with barebones Metroidvania elements, but being 2D with plain art, its really hard to distinguish specific surroundings and remember where you were and are coming from.

Ori is really short and its much more platforming focused, but its good and it looks gorgeous.

Prime 1 is also outstanding though.

Any of the GBA or DS castlevania are great, Dawn and Aria of Sorrow are best, Harmony of Dissonance, is ok. Portrait of Ruin is really good, Order of Ecclesia is pretty up and down. Circle of the Moon is really meh.

Dead Cells is barely a metroidvania but it does have some elements of it. Mostly just unlocked power ups and opening new paths, but its a very fun game with a satisfying loop.

in 3d those get to be called /adventure
you can't call a 2d game an "adventure game" because that means "point and click"

The only wrong answer is Hollow Knight, it tries to be Metroidvania but doesn't understand what made games like Super Metroid good in the first place.

All other Igavanias
All Metroids
Valdis Story
Hollow Knight
Basically, someone post the fucking image, I don't have it.

Thanks man, I think I'll go with Hollow Knight first and then play the classic SotN after since I just finished Bloodstained.

This one?

Attached: metroidvanias.jpg (2000x8200, 3.45M)

Yeah, but it seems to be another edit. There are so many versions of it I lost count.

forgot AM2R

How about this one then?

Attached: metroidvanias.jpg (4500x2593, 1.71M)

This one is dumb and doesn't really make a lot of sense. If we to remove some of them, like VVVVVV for example, then we might have a good infoimage.

Terraria is my favorite Orihollowmetroidmulanavania game.

haloid is not good and not a vania style game go away.

The comparison is pretty apt. Both games left me feeling pretty disappointed.

Was this a swing at Metroid Prime? Having a hard time telling because it was fumbled so hard.

>Metroid
>Metroid 2
>AM2R
not metroidvanias dont @ me

@469374259
Are you retarded?

It was probably the worst castlevania on GBA but still good enough to have fun with.

ESA CHADS IN THE HOUSE TONIGHT

Attached: what a cool guy.jpg (800x640, 114K)

How is that fan-made Metroid:Samus return?

AM2R? It's pretty much the same game as Zero Mission but with more polish.

How many of the devs and shills are on damage control on hollow knight on this board. Game is legit 0/10.

superior to Samus Returns in every way. It's the Zero Mission of Metroid 2.

it's legit the best metroidvania on pc

SR had WAY better boss battles though.

VVVVVV is great, but in no way a metroidvania. Otherwise its a good list to go with.

symphony of the night is the big one for a reason
For something more modern guacamole is pretty good

(You)

I tried playing through all the Metroid-styled Castlevanias recently. SOTN and Aria of Sorrow were great. Dawn of Sorrow was good but the map felt a bit too big and had you bouncing all over the place. Portrait of Ruin was a refreshing change of pace with the multiple smaller maps and character switching. Order of Ecclesia took the smaller maps too far and had too much emphasis on long rooms full of combat but it was still good. I played about 30 minutes of Harmony of Dissonance but after playing SOTN and Aria the controls felt too unrefined, it was okay. I tried to play Circle of the Moon and it immediately felt like dogshit. Classicvania controls in a Metroidvania environment with an oddly motion sickness inducing camera and a core system that's completely based on enemy loot drops.

Guacamelee is simple and fun, with unique twist on the combat which usually is bad/acceptable in metroidvanias.

Harmony of dissonance is best castlemania

Isn't the grind i this game fucking horrendous? Crafting often requires hundreds of the same item and the game doesn't even let you stack a hundred in your inventory.
And it's not even interesting grind in most cases, having to reset an area to insta-kill and loot just one enemy with non-existant drop rates.

Circle of the Moon is pretty good once you get accustomed to the movement. The worst thing about it is that how difficult you find the game depends a lot on RNG and what cards you get when. It's still worth playing, though.

Super Metroid, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Hollow Knight

When will hollow kniggers knock if off and stop shilling their game on Yea Forums?

Just because it's good doesn't mean it's a good metroidvania. Fuck off already.

Attached: doge_angery.jpg (1080x1080, 121K)

Took me only 50 hours to grind out and craft every single item in the game. Literally git gud and raise your LCK stat.

Fucking casual fags I swear.

Attached: shrug.jpg (1150x1266, 134K)

>50 hours
Sounds like you should have taken advantage of shards that increase gold and drop rates and used the shop more to replenish items you used up for alchemy. It only took me 30 hours to 100% with 1 of every item.

I enjoy the metroid part way more than the castlevania part in these games. Metroid is the fun world exploration and new abilities. Castlevania-part is just unnecessary garbage grinding.

I also did the techniques, NG+ for maxing out Silver Knight and Shortcut shards, 99 lvl for all familiars etc.

The castlevania part is customisation and gear options.

oh wtf

I only wear Luck items since I started playing. Augment Luck is maxed. Pickpocket is maxed.
Alchemy isn't yet because it requires too much gold and that takes farming 99 Alkahest and few gold armors, going bakc to DE , then going farming again.

>farming 99 Alkahest
You could just buy them from the shop.

Craft Gold once and just buy it from the shop.

I'm not made of money. Maybe I am hurrying too much and I should do this later. I just got Zangetsuto.

There's a water horse right outside a teleport in the water place which drops a weapon which you can destroy for gold.

Aria of Sorrow. Dawn of Sorrow. Don't listen to the Aussie shitters, Hollow Knight is the biggest step backward gaming has ever seen combined with a shitty devs and fanbase. Seriously the HK cancer is the worst I have seen on Yea Forums in recent years, well that and Smash autism. But they have autism

Calling hollow night a meme but fell for the iconoclast meme lmao

Fantastic game.

I can't even beat the first boss in Symphony of the night ;_;

The double team?

Yah.

Cheat by learning tetra spirit or summon spirit.

The classics
>Super Metroid
>Sotn
If you like those check other games from the series
Recen indies
>Axiom Verge
>Hollow Knight
>Steam World Dig 1 and 2
>Guacamelee
>Ori and the Blind Forest

Just started this, pretty fun so far

Does Environmental Station Alpha has any RPG elements or it's more like a classic Metroid ? Or the hell is this game?

more like Metroid

ori and la mulana are crap
these people are insecure and so they put in artsy crap and archaic crap to pretend they are serious hobbyists

if you want more like bloodstained you play the game it rips off, aria of sorrow
if you want actual metroid you should start with MZM rather than super metroid, that way you get the story in the right order, and play the better one second

the castlevanias and metroids for GBA are the best of all from the genre imo

GBA had solid titles.
