so is the ideal console focused on delivering performance at a reasonable price or should it instead focus on things like portability at the cost of performance?
Console selling point

I dont give a shit as long as its fun and memorable to play. A complete package like a story from start to end.
but would you rather have that same game portable but not perform and look as good or have the same game not portable but perform and look better?
Whats the point of portability? Like, how often are you gonna play games out of the house if you're not a kid
It really depends, but as someone with every current gen console, the Switch versions of most big multiplats look like absolute dogshit. I remember picking up DOOM on Switch because everyone ranted and raved about it, but the visuals and frame rate made me hate it as a portable game. It was oh so slightly better docked, but at that point, I could go on Steam or turn on my Xbone and have a much superior experience
>people going to reply with shit like travel
well probably valid for some or many but I travel and never ever do I feel like playing games when I go outside of my house, there's so much to do, if I'm camping or something and there's a boring moment, I can watch a movie on my phone
To me, consoles should cover all the bases that PC doesnt.
>affordability
>polished UI and experience
>ease of use
>novel features/gimmicks that PC cant offer
>comfortable to use on the couch
I work an office job. I don't want to come home just to sit at my desk with m+kb. Only use the PC for multiplayershit nowadays.
Should focus on what differentiates it and its video-game experience from the competition, since otherwise it's just what logo you want on a prebuilt PC. Portability is just an upshot, pushing for more power is something everybody's doing and mostly leads to video games being harder to develop for the same returns.
I have this thing called a porch swing
I’ll take a graphics hit if that means I can do my 3 favorite things.
Swing, drink and play vidyas
You don’t hang out with friends? Outside of that, portability doesn’t necessarily mean being outside your house. It’s nice to just play a game in any room and not be tethered to your TV
to me that's like saying focus on gimmicks instead of just having a platform with the task of running games the best you can
>used to be PC Master Race
>also got an office job coming out of college
>actively loathe being in front of a computer for vidya
I really want to find a good FPS because god dammit I hate what I’ve become
Portability sounds neat on paper but literally everything else takes a hit to support it.
This
I don’t get why everyone is pissing themselves over 4K is the future!
All it’s doing is making games harder and more expensive to make.
Why do you think the 3DS got so many interesting games
Because it costs pennies to develop for
You could push out 4 3DS for 1/2 the price of 1 PS4-XBox-PC multiplat
Optimization is the developer's problem. Ideally you should be making your platform easy enough to develop for that it's not a huge issue, but bad or incompetent developers will still find ways for games to run like ass no matter how powerful the system or how well its platform can be developed on. I'm all for gimmicks, when gimmicks work they fuckin' WORK. Remember the PS Move and Kinect after the success of the Wii?
not him but I hang out with friends almost every day and it'd be kind of weird to pull out a switch and play some game when we're hanging out, sometimes I play something on a friends computer but otherwise hanging out consists of all sorts of other shit
I guess if you're travelling a lot it's useful to kill some time, but I don't think it's the case for most people
If I'm gonna play games with my buddies I don't see how a portable console is any better than a normal one, in fact it's probably worse cause you can't split screen
Vidya is an art form. Visuals are essential. The fact that companies like Nintendo still don't acknowledge this, and continues to make underpowered story-less tripe for casuals and kiddies all for "muh portable" is what fucking pisses me off. Leave that target audience to mobile.
Who gives a fuck about portability outside of literal children?
me sensible adult, thing i don't like for babbies
should be cheap with lots of good content
If there was one single ideal concept, there would be only one company making them, because the choice would be simple math.
I think it's fair to say that with strong hardware tons of resources go to stuff that's not essential, but then again something like rdr2 is really cool and needs modern hardware
Unironically try Splatoon 2
It’s probably my favorite shooter right now
Just don’t get caught in the “1 more game” meme.
Ended up staying up til 3 am playing because “Just 1 more game”
>Shit I lost I gotta win just this last game then off to bed
>Fuck yeah we won! Well now I gotta keep the momentum going
Repeat til 3 am
No, retard. I'm saying that only children can make use of portability because they play games while their parents drive them places. When you're an adult, you drive for yourself.
Consoles are supposed to inherently have more performance since developers are only developing them around one system
I'm going to bet that guy by pointing out that the home consoles don't really seem to have optimization issues to me, it's switch multiplats that can have ass performance from what I see
Consoles are just mass-produced PCs. Thy should have the most available games in every possible genre. This is why the PS4 is so successful, it has games of all genres and the only games it does not get are the Microsoft 1st party titles.
Meanwhile, having an Xbox means not getting Japanese games except for a handful. Its offering just don't add up.
I unironically thought motion controls were the future
After RE4 Wii pointer shooting I thought
“Oh my god I’m finally good at shooting games, CODfags eat your heart out”
yeah well ps4 is also a decent balance between cost and performance, it delivers a good platform for modern games at like 250 bucks or whatever it costs now
People who see the light of day basement dwelling faggot
I rather like that they're common place, shame games didn't really use motion controls for aiming until Doom on Switch popped up. It's way intuitive.
>wherever I go, my games go
but what if you take the bus or aren't the one driving, or myriad other situations where you can be defined as traveling but not specifically piloting a vehicle that demands your full attention
not him but I imagine playing bing bing on a bus would feel pretty dumb and not enjoyable while it would be comfy at home
Exactly. Splatoon 1 showed me the light. Quite honestly, gyro aiming needs to be the standard for console shooters. Nothing will ever be more precise than mouse and keyboard, but gyro aiming is much more reliable than purely using analog sticks
The XB1 base is literally the same. If anything the XB1 S is a better option because it can output 4K video at least.
PS4 Slims with Spiderman were going for $200 on last Black Friday.
>RDR2
>Cool
For like an hour
After you get past the realism I just felt like I was watching Netflix then occasionally get to shoot some guys then back to Netflix.
I was extremely bored with the game and it looks stunning but was a slog to play
okay well people like it a lot and it's just an example out of many games that are built around modern hardware
PC exists for those that want the best performance, visuals, FPS, AA and the like. Consoles should follow Nintendo's route and offer things PCs can't.
I said it before and I'll say it again, the Switch is the future of console gaming. Each new console offers less and less reason to purchase other than game exclusivity. Nintendo realized their is a profit/manufacturing-cost ceiling with consoles and instead doubled down on successes of the past: motion and handheld gaming. If more developers simply took time to optimize games for the Switch/eventual Switch Mini, the console landscape would be much more interesting instead of what we have now:big black cloud/streaming/Netflix boxes with only one or two games people are willing to shell out $500 for.
Pic related: The greatest console ever made.
nah, a ps4 is like 200 bucks and is a very simple way to play your new games and have a comfy time, this is why consoles are for so many, a cheap easy way to get a good enough time without any hassles, PC doesn't offer that
Splatoon 2 is uncontested my most played Switch game. I was referring to PC shooters because I really want to enjoy PC gaming again
Nigga you don’t run my life
I’m a habitual pacer I just walk around my house pretty much all day.
Why? I don’t know I just like walking
Consoles are not inherently high performance. They are inherently predictable performance. You can program for any scale, as long as you know what you are dealing with.
Eh man after you lose a bunch of games to niggers who broke into your house and stole all your stuff you’d start taking your expensive shit with you too
Portable tech is the obvious evolution of stationary, legacy tech. Can't believe I have to have this conversation in 20-fucking-19. I bet you were one of those poorfags who kicked and screamed when television service providers made the switch from analog to digital in the 00s too.
I find it bizarre how up until the Vita, everyone was amazed by how far portable graphics have come.
But with the Switch, everyone just complains it's not good enough
There's no need for certain things to be portable, my stationary toilet works fine for example
Still like Reggie said
If it’s not fun
What’s the point?
I still play GBA Doom on my slowly dying GBA SP because guess what it’s still fun
Yes, the original model, used, is around $200 now, on the cusp of the new generation of consoles at that. Who would buy something like that when all their friends will be migrating to the PS5/Xbox Two in 6 - 9 months?
vita was just a portable console while switch goes for that two in one thing so people judge it as a home console too
you don't think it's fun but there's tons of games not made by nintendo that are loved by so many
Not even Gen 4-tier of optimization could make current games run on the Switch. It's always going to be 30 FPS 720p dynamic resolution at best, if a company even wants to go that far to downport their game for the Switch. It is notorious the fact that the only games on Switch that sell well are Nintendo games, never third party.
The future of console gaming is, unironically, the PS5 and the Scarlett. If you really want to play mobile, all you have to do is stream from YOUR CONSOLE. Much better than Stadia or the Switch.
Also Nintendo is missing out on the most successful gimmick of all time: VR. Being late to jump on the virtual reality bandwagon will cost them dearly. Sony took away 50% market share with a half-assed attempt, imagine what Nintendo could do if they cared.
Switch is pretty much it’s only thing
The closet thing over those 700$ win GDP things and even then there’s a ton of fundamental differences
I'd argue portable toilets would be something everyone would want and buy were there a sanitary way to dispose of feces and urine, as well as remove the smell.
Also, no one likes using public restrooms either, so this would be a great market for some millionaire 20 something to try their hand at honestly.
many people buy consoles when they're cheap, not all gamers are trying to stay on the edge of gaming or something, gaming is not a core part of everyone's life, some just like to sit on their sofa and enjoy their battlefield v or something
I think consoles selling points evolve during the lifespan of the console, something like PS5 will start off by selling on the next gen factor and eventually it will become cheaper and build its library and the selling point changes accordingly, so it fits many audiences as it goes
See You could get a PS4 Slim for $200 last year during a sale. You can get one now for like $250 with games bundled, new. And it still has 18 months of life ahead + another year or two of parallel support.
Doom wasn’t made by Nintendo.
in the end many people care more about the gaming experience itself so it's not that weird that there's a group of people who are frustrated that the latest mario game must be on a tablet form factor console
This. People should be losing their shit that we can play the Witcer 3 and Doom 2016 on the go. Maybe if Rockstar were smart and released GTAV on the Switch, people's opinions on the Switch would change.
sure and doom is good, so are many many other games also not by nintendo
That’s not what I’m seeing hell
Mario Maker threads seem happy as fuck.
People are genuinely having fun
Maybe I just notice it more on console because user configuration isn't a thing but holy fuck are they incapable of working within the limits of their hardware or what? Its like they get new hardware, immediately break it trying to get it to do things it can't, and when they get an upgrade so the hardware can do the stuff they were trying to do they immediately break that trying to push even further.
Just work with what you got, fuck.
zero people would complain if nintendo also had a typical home console with home console performance, not going to happen but then people would have nothing to complain about
Have you seen the numbers for Witcher 3 on Switch? It's 30 FPS with dips at 480p DYNAMIC. Meaning that it will drop under 480p depending on the scene.
okay well the premise was just about why some people are hating on switch
Sure devs could optimize their games to run on the Switch, but then the wow factor of muh graphics would be gone and the game would have to sell itself on *shudder* gameplay alone. Are modern AAA games even fun, user? Or are they just well marketed shiny remastered turds that sheep are told to by because its new?
Source?
Your post does not make sense, please read what you have written. Also if you don't like modern games you can go right back to hugging your SNES or PS2 instead.
Ok?
Most of my favorite games aren’t made by Nintendo anyways
Monster hunter Capcom
Mega man Capcom
Resident evil Capcom
Dead rising Capcom
Pretty much everything SMT Atlus
Pretty much everything Platinum games
Basically all the metal slug games
And Miku rhythm games
well I don't get what point you were making then
I don’t really see a problem with it
It just works.
It’s basically a complete upgrade from the 3DS and that’s all a fuck ton of people wanted.
A 3DS that can connect to a TV
it satisfies that group of people sure
Panzer Dragoon is such a good game, I really hope it doesn't turn out to be exclusive.
That if games aren’t fun what’s the point of all these games with amazing graphics if the gameplay is boring, unfun, or just extremely punishing
That’s like 80 million people
every console arguing always ends up with shareholder tier arguing but going back to the comment where this started from, there's some who aren't satisfied with switch because it's also nintendo's home console this gen and for the people who look for a home console, the hardware is obviously underwhelming
use a controller
Dumb question. Handhelds should focuse on handheld, stationary should focuse on comfyness and performance with a reasonable price.
It makes sense. Developers make games with realistic graphics and limited bursts gameplay covered in cinematics, in mind instead of opting for games with timeless artstyles and mechanics that can run on anything and have people coming back to play them 10 or twenty years from now. No one twenty years from now will care about Red Dead Redemption 2 or Cyberpunk 2077, but people still hold games like Banjo Kazooie and Ape Escape in high regard, games that can literally be run on your phone.
Games first and foremost should be about engaging gameplay, not about how many textures or polygons some NPC has and getting it to traverse some soulless empty open world at 60 FPS/8k.
I literally went on public transport for the first time in ages yesterday in my home city (because I usually live away for university) which also happens to be the capital of my country and the guy sitting next to me on the train had a switch and was playing mario kart. Some black guy. Mobile gaming is the most popular form of gaming right now and a switch is just a beefed up mobile in a sense.
