When the game came out it was a pinnacle of game design, soundtrack and mechanics. Obviously the game doesn't stand very well now if you were to play it again, but in 1998 it blew minds. You have to realize that 1998 was 21 years ago. That's two fucking decades.

If you're talking about Smash, then in 4 and Ultimate, each extra character can be bought individually. As for Ultimate's Fighter Pass, Sakurai even said outright to not buy it unless you're reasonably sure that it would hold enough value to you to purchase it.
