I don't think it has much relevance to Renegade, either. It's more a standard side-scrolling brawler, a re-imagined River City more than an attempt to re-make Kunio games. Given that the last few Kunio games in the traditional style didn't seem to be doing very well, I don't have an objection with something completely new.

There are a literal metric shitload of Kunio games. A large amount of them aren't fighting games though as Technos just tossed the characters into whatever genre they felt like.
Most Kunio games that got released in the US back in the 8 and 16 bit days removed most of the original characters and stories and made them stand alone games, like River City Ransom, Super Dodgeball, Crash 'n' the Boys Street Challenge, Nintendo World Cup, etc.
The only Kunio game to actually keep everything 100 percent intact back then was the Neo Geo version of Super Dodge Ball.

It's rough around the edges and lacks polish, but the gameplay is some of the best in the series. Basically, use the Steam guides to replace the in game movelist since it's unusable and tell you what items do and where to go if you get lost since the game is still designed like an NES game.

Every character in the game is fucked up if you know how to play as them, it's really just Rudy who is a struggle to play as and Mikey doesn't make any sense unless you play on an arcade stick or something since the bulk of his stuff is button holds. Alex and Ryan are both classic power houses, Glen and Paul are brain dead easy, Provie is probably the best character in the game but takes some getting used to, Wes is easy and strong, and what's her face unlock character doesn't matter.

Why couldn't they just use the original character designs? The new designs for Kyoko and Misako looks like shit. The redesigned Kunio and Riki look even worse, especially compared to the in-game enemies who have the classic Japanese delinquent look.

Bruno is kinda awkward but I've seen people be good with him so I know it's possible. Everything Provie has probably has a way to combo into it because Provie can basically cancel anything she's doing into the hand spin stance and then cancel that into whatever. Kishimoto was pretty hands on with Double Dragon Neon though. He was telling them how the story should be and even told them how to design Billy and Jimmy. Their original designs had them looking like greasers with pompadours and Kishimoto told them to make their hair spikey and to make them look more like Kenshiro. He also approved the script for River City Ransom Underground, making sure it was in the spirit of the series. Underground flips the relationships. Basically Alex and Roxy and Ryan and Cyndi both realize that they're not really compatible and they break up. In the opening sequence where you play the ending of RCR running up to the roof, if you play as Ryan as you save Cyndi she complains that you took too long and wants to go shopping, but if you play as Alex she basically just acts like a ditz. After the time jump when you get to the auto shop, Roxy will make a comment about how breaking up with Alex to date Ryan was the best thing she ever did or something like that.

Ryan isn't more prominent though. If anything, he's pushed to a side character because he has literally nothing to do but stand by and watch as Alex's story unfolds. You could make Alex a happy go lucky nice guy who got along with everybody just fine and maybe he did stick with Roxy and everything worked out, but then there really wouldn't be much point to Alex and Ryan tagging along other than "Hey, remember River City Ransom?" They'd have actually nothing to do besides run from point A to point B until you save the day.

I don't want them to make Alex flawless, since by all accounts he's a delinquent troublemaker in RCR. But it just seemed like a weird direction to take when combined with the younger playable characters.

Well the younger characters thing mostly came about so that you could have a new River City Ransom experience without it being a total rehash, and setting the game's in universe date to coincide with the actual real world time since we last saw Alex and Ryan do something was an interesting idea. To kinda make it feel like if you played that game as a kid, it actually has been all that time that you've been waiting for a new one. I also feel like they wanted to differentiate Alex and Ryan from Kunio and Riki to make them actually their own characters instead of just retranslated clones. It's not like the original localization kept everything exactly the same anyways, there was wiggle room to make it actually different, and if you're setting the game in the localized universe rather than the Kunio universe, why not.

Kishimoto didn't really had a hand-on involvement in either game, he simply gave parental supervision.

Also, Kishimoto worked on Renegade, but he had almost nothing to do with River City Ransom outside creating Kunio and Riki. That was Mitsuhiro Yoshida, who seems to have an ego clash with Kishimoto (which is probably why his planned RCR sequel ended up being canceled).

There are many pompadour characters, so there's really no telling.
There are a select few blonde girls in the Kunio universe. The most used is Shimada (Riki's kidnapped gf in RCR), but she looks much different from the character in that small circle.
There are two other blondes, one with a ponytail in River City Melee and Super Sports Special, but I don't know the names offhand.

For the most part with a few discrepancies, the games on NES and SNES take place chronologically in the same order as their releases.

I was under impression it's not really a true prequel, but the characters acting out a stage, since the JP title is くにおくんの時代劇だよ全員集合! basically means "It's Kunio's Period Play, Gather Everyone!"

There was never any consistent Kunio canon during the TJC since different people worked on the various games and they each have their ideas of how the Kunio franchise should be. That's why Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari (directed by Mitsuhiro Yoshida and Hiroyuki Sekimoto) is so radically different from Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun (directed by Yoshihisa Kishimoto).

Adding crowd management to Final Fight would make it much easier and whenever I hear "challenging but fair" I can't help but think someone is trying to make an excuse for it being easier. On top of this, it's a Western developer. Scott Pilgrim and Neon are both casualized beat em ups as well yet they are not always touted as such by their communities.

Final Fight has that too. Haggar's lariat, Guy's and Cody's tatsus, etc. That's literally what those exist to be.

I just got done finishing the Capcom beat-em-up collection, plus Sengoku II and III last month. I hope Fight n’ Rage sees a console release someday, and as long as a scattershot collection of SHUMPS are getting ported for the Switch, Denjin Makai II: Guardians would be nice!

Aesthetically this game looks and sounds great, but I'm interested in the game mechanics, beat-em-ups could really use some more complicated mechanics, counters and cross-ups, the parry system from Fights n' Rage is decent, though a bit too strong with the free attack.

Honestly the stylish action fighters like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta are more interesting, but the multiplayer options are so pitiful in them, you're better off just playing Smash Bros 2v2 to see something fun. Streets of Rage 4 looks solid at least, the gameplay preview showed some potential for interesting co-op combos.
