The gameplay mechanics of Monster Hunter have improved vastly over time, but I always felt that the first Monster Hunter captured the atmosphere of the game better than any of the following games by a longshot.

Just a small, rural, primitive village that raises hunters to protect their humble lifestyle from aggressive monsters. Now what's it about? Research? Fucking stupid.

MHF2/FU was initially about getting revenge on a Tigrex that fucked you up in the intro. You were helping the village as a way to get strong enough to stand toe to toe with it. No bullshit, just you vs the monster.
