What happened to Shell Mario?

Got shelled out

Christ I fucking hated that cunt, until I went through the game again to get all the coins. They really did the shell no fucking favors when you just play through the game casually.

Dented Luigis head in on multiplayer

Goddamn it was fun, I would destroy my friends

I got the impression it was supposed to be a "secret" powerup, or at the very least exceedingly rare outside a few choice levels. I know it was required in World 1-Tower to access a secret flagpole that led to a cannon.

>speedrunning the game requires shell mario in the first tower, which can only be done by timing it perfect at that toad house, with no chance to re-try
That part always kept my ass clenched so hard. I'm not really a speedrunner but being able to go from new file to credits in under 30 minutes was kino

It was against Koopa rights so he isn't allowed to use it anymore.

It comes up way more than the frog or hammer suits do in Mario 3

>Nintendo will NEVER have Mario vs. Luigi in another game
I can't take it bros...

NSMB1 wasnt bad

Can you make some sort of replica in Mario Maker 2? does the game have vs. battles?

Are any of them bad, really? I haven't played the Wii U one, but NSMB, NSMB Wii, and NSMB2 are all decent games. They just aren't very memorable. There isn't much reason to play them over SMB3. I feel the same way about 3D Land (though again I didn't play 3D World). I wish 3D Land in particular was as weird as the GB games it's named after were willing to be.

None of them are bad. You could call NSMB2 mediocre, but there's not a single bad mainline Mario game.

It's early enough they can just reset if they mess up anyway. Also there's an overworld block with a 1/6 chance of giving it too.

The "new" games got a lot of shit on this board for years and I think they still do
I only played 1 on DS but I remember it fondly

>NSMBU will never get the respect it deserves because people see it as a mere copy and paste

They are only "bad" in the sense that none of them really try to do anything interesting and that they are overall very forgettable. They are comfort food Mario games.
It doesn't help that a lot of them are extremely easy (though New Super Luigi U actually offers a decent challenge).

Is it not? What makes it better than the other NSMB games?

It's just a little better, the best of the four I'd reckon. The backgrounds and world map in particular are really nice.

Exactly, NSMBU along with 3D world was one of my favourite Wii U games. You can tell they put a lot more thought into the level design compared to Wii and also tried to give each level a sort of "theme" to help them stick out. I remember kinda just breezing through Wii, but in U I was actually motivated and interested enough to 100% it. Sad to see so many people dismiss it.

New enemies, really varying courses and everything feels more distinct in theme and background.
I really enjoyed it, and I don't remember much of the Wii one at all

The only game worthy of the "New" moniker was the first NSMB game. All the other games have been suffering from sameface syndrome, despite being solidly designed.

Someone please post a screenshot of the Starry Night Van Gogh levels, shit was so cash.

Multiplayer versus, yes.

>world
wasn't it just one or two levels?

arrested for koopa blackfacing

Yes, but there are several limitations.
>levels can't loop seamlessly
>bashing players' heads in doesn't award points
>can't collect a certain number of X to progress
>no catchy music

First two are good
Bottom two are soulless

They're not bad, but they're stagnant and a downgrade from the past 2D games.

It got reused in 3D World

Got it when it came out for the switch and was pleasantly surprised

>usable for 5 seconds before it says "fuck you" and ejects

anyone else getting loads of shell mario nsmb1 speedrun videos in youtube recommended lately?

I seriously hope 3D world gets updates in SMM2 it feels a little bland at the moment, anyone else agree.

Aggressively bland. You will likely have an okay time with them but not come away caring about anything you did.

I hate the way it plays. Long jumping is cool and all, but my brain has been hardwired to expect Mario to get more distance out of a midair spin, not to slow down to a crawl.
Because of this I end up dying on 3D world levels like a toddler just learning how to play vidya.

He died in the war.

>introduce acorn/squirrel motif in the first world
>go back to generic shit for the rest of the game
What the fuck was up with that?

Thus
Mario vs Luigi was probably the most competitive thing to come from Nintendo since Mario party and smash bros

no. new mario games are pure fun and if you have at least 2 friends you can see this. tranny speedrunners are litearlly the only people that hate on a mario game.

It's technically the only level in the main playthrough that's like that and it's in the spooky part of Soda Jungle. But there's another similar looking one in the extra world to represent Soda Jungle.

The super acorn isn’t even mario maker, I think legitimately after nsmbu it only appeared in a few Mario party minigames and that’s it.
