If VC isn't dead it's at the very least going to be consigned to absolutely bottom of the barrel low budget garbage like Shining for the rest of all time. They had their chance but they didn't really care.

VC1 is at its core an extremely standard European war story with a bunch of anime tropes stapled to it. No other game in the series is a war story first, anime please buy me bait second.

1. Back when it was released VC1 bombed as hard as 4 so Sega decided to send it to the PSP; it was bargain bin tier.
2. The recent VC1 port sold a lot due to a. being cheap. b. being a rare game with a "hidden gem" reputation.
3. When VC4 arrived the public had played 1 and realized that the so-called hidden gem wasn't as good as its reputation so it ignored the new game.
You need to get easy with those nostalgia goggles. Or it doesn't even matter given how the series is dead for good.

You played 1 as a teenager / child so the game is protected by nostalgia goggles.
You played 4 as an adult, when your hatred of everything Japanese is in high gear, so it doesn't get the same protection as 1.
Myself? I played it for the first time when the Steam port dropped five years ago, as a young adult and 4 when it launched so no nostalgia goggles / "it's one of the system's few exclusives" pedestal for me.

Cool strawman, but it's impossible to ignore the difference in tone between the first one and its sequels.
VC3 is still king.
Playing through it right now. I feel like it definitely surpasses the first in a lot of areas. Grenadiers are a great addition to the series and are a lot of fun to play with. Some things like commanding a battalion of units or commanding the ship feel really useless though, pretty much ignore those altogether.
Story is as good as any VC game, which makes me wonder when the fuck they are going to start a new war or something. Playing in the same timeline over and over is really boring, can they really not conjure up another fictional country and have them go to war with someone else?
My biggest turnoff with the series is that individual characters don't level up. Makes the units feel like they lack individuality

This is by definition a flaw of game design in the scoring system rather than anything inherent to the game itself.
All they have to do is change the ranking from "Capture the fort in the shortest amount of turns" to a combined "X amount of turns and X amount of units defeated"
That way, your scoring is judged entire on your efficiency to kill a large number of units in a short amount of turns while still retaining the usefulness of scouts for stealing far away bases for you to Rapid Deploy a Shocktrooper to defend the base.
I liked VC2 the most because of all the toys we get.
Armored Techs get landmines, the only situation in the series where you get player-based landmines. One of the post-game missions can be consistently and easily 1-turned because you can lure the boss (elimination target) to go over the landmine like a fool and instantly die.
Also, it's the only one with multiplayer. It's stupid, somewhat janky, but interesting, and lots of fun.
Though VC4's grenadiers are so good, it compensates enough for the elimination of the Gunner, Anthem Corp, Armored Tech, and Fencer.

VC1 sold like shit when it was first released. Like legitimately very awful sales. So bad I'm surprised they continued the series, albeit on handheld. It only really picked up sales when it was rereleased on PC and that was when a Japanese PC port could still be noteworthy. These days that's nothing special.

Within the year the sales were good in the west and they got better as time went on, eventually selling 1 million on PS3. The only reason 4 was green lit was because 1 sold so well on PC.
3 and 4 bombed because literally fucking no one wanted more anime in the games. 1 sold as well as it did and was liked as much as it was because it was fairly light on the anime cringe and had a really unique feeling to it. 2 because it was a sequel, but not nearly as many people liked it.
