One of my main gripes with mechanics was how animation didn't fit with, say, actual number of swings a Zealot makes. Not just with melee attacks, ranged is probably more guilty of this on average.

Because they were divorced from or actively disliked the bullshit that ruined the narrative. They were all reminders of the past glories of their race and those closest to them.
Tychus was the old terran way of heavy guns and moxie to man your way through a problem while dealing with the misfortune of manipulations.
Abathur was the swarm's perfectionist attitude and the cerebrates' alien natures, totally focused on bringing back the swarm's glory.
Alarak is less about looking back on the past but about disparaging the present, relentlessly shitting on both the modern story bullshit and generic hero attitudes.
