It wouldn't be awful and may get you through a good deal of AI battles. Halberds are good all-around infantry. But, you lack any infantry that has real staying power (halberds have no shields and only moderate armor) or killing power (halberds will do work against large targets, but not enough work - handgunners can supplement this nicely though). Handgunners are great but without any fast moving units like cavalry they can be caught by a variety of enemy units. Pike and Shot just isn't really viable for warhammer's messy battles.

They still have a grimdark tone, but much like the orks in 40K, most of the shit they get up to is serious in the lore but from an outsiders perspective looks fucking silly (IE planning on blowing up / tractor beaming the green moon because the moon is made of warpstone and Skaven fucking LOVE warpstone. Or the mad scientist rat attempting to make the fantasy equivalent of a fucking atomic bomb)

They can only reliably kill monstrous infantry

That's pretty much the ONLY way to play Empire. You hold the line with halberds or spears w/shields and blast the fuck out of niggers with handgunners or hellblaster volleyguns and cannons. The empire has a decent counter to everything though it suffers against shit like yes- dragons - unless you focus fire and bring cannons and such.

The exact composition of an empire army will vary depending on what you're going against, but in general will be ~6 line troop units (swordsmen for light infantry heavy armies, halberds for heavy infantry/monster/cav heavy armies, spears w/shields for ranged heavy armies) backed up by 4-5 ranged units (crossbows for light/chaff heavy, handgunners for armored/elite heavy)

You'll also want at least 2-3 artillery pieces per army, a mage, and a Lord or a captain to counter/stall enemy melee Lord's/heros

That's a pretty broad question - what do you want to to know?

With multiple armies and rock/paper/scissors. There's a counter unit to everything. Learn the factions and their units.

Bit complicated. Pick your favorite race and read up on that. Just don't take anything too serious, since every race has its good and bad moments, no one is really stronger than the other.
