Probably the same reason the GBA had so many: it felt like the older hardware. Developers were probably more comfortable developing for something that resembled the mid-to-late 90's. This Oz game, for example, was made by the same people who worked on Wild Arms.

Unless you specifically are referring to low-poly titles that elicit a certain emotion within you, there's plenty of smaller releases that the devs have poured their spirits into making.

No because the word lost all meaning and now everyone uses it to compare old good/new bad when the whole idea was that the game with soul had a lot of effort and care put into it instead of being some soulless cashgrab.

Smash Ultimate has tons of soul and passion thrown in by Sakurai, Nintendo employees, Non-Nintendo employees, and the fans that play it (in the custom content or the community that follows it), It is probably the greatest current game right now imo.

WWE Shut your Mouth had tons of soul. I wouldn't say the last soulful wrestling game, that was HCTP, but this was certainly the peak of SOUL with fully explorable arenas as well as a full times square area and restaurants and shit you could brawl through, and do things like drive cars, motor cycles, helicopters, etc.

Not to mention they let you climb the giant SMACKDOWN fist. I miss it lads.

actually the last 2 or 3 2k games have the best creation tools of all imo, the first few were really rough and they started from scratch but in 18 and 19 they have the creation absolutely nailed. you have full facial sculpting and custom textures, and now there's more than enough crazy shit to make almost anyone you want and make it look like a proper in game model too.

you're right about the gameplay though, that's fucking awful and the back stage areas they added back in are just small little boxed off areas where you can barely do anything, and the shit they did put in is all half assed and looks terrible

I've been enjoying 2k19 a hell out of more than 2k18 at least since it feels at bit less like the developers are fighting against the concept of basic fun but some of the omissions and creation restrictions still stick out like a sore thumb.

Melee and Brawl, Zelda WW and TP, Gta Vice City and San Andreas, Sonic Adventure 2 and Heroes, Spongebob, Silent Hill 2, Kill Bill, No Country for Old Men, Shadow of the Colossus, Newgrounds, Shrek, Internet Forums, Mulholland Drive, and A History of Violence.

what creation restrictions? genuinely, you can make anyone and make it look like an actual model from the developers like it was dlc or something. the only thing they never added back was the create a story mode which i know a lot of people liked but i never used myself. everything else from the entrances, to the videos, to the wrestlers have all been expanded upon from the 360 era games in my view. interested what you feel is missing at this point.

As with almost all media its because it had a monumentally successful marketing and ESPECIALLY toy campaign. IMO the primary reason that media persists is entirely because of toys and other physical shit- everyone had spongebob shirts, backpacks, and what have you. I also think this is true about star wars- the reason that the IP is so huge today isn't because of the movies but because every kid grew up holding some star wars bullshit in their hands.
