The only 3D Zelda game I particularly like is OoT, though.

Skyward Sword is a solid adventure game with great combat and excellent level design

Majora's Mask is a dull, unsatisfying ordeal of repetition and generally being a slave to your virtual personal organiser

Is there a particular reason to be averse to the 3DS MM?

There’s more things to do in botw’s overworks than Windwakers overworld and it more interesting to look at

Boss fights are awful and they messed up the zora and deku transformation masks. I believe there is a graphical enhancement mod for the n64 version of MM

Huh, alright then. Is N64 much of a hassle? I've done a little bit of PS2 emulation in the past but nothing besides that.

BotW is really the best home console Zelda game since MM. TP was a more tedious watered down OoT and SS is a badly designed game with a few highs. WW is solid, but obviously unfinished.

You should be fine in regards to emulation, just make sure you do regular back ups of your saves and use a decent controller or aiming will suck

Zelda on the NES was my first ever game so I've played them all at release. As for the 3d ones...

TP is a good game, it's just the most derivative and least inspired in the series. SS has the least exploration (basically none) but has some amazing moments, great dungeons, and a good story.
Never thought OoT would be overtaken in my mind but they did it with BotW.
There's always been two kinds of Zelda players - those who play for the dungeons and those who play for overworld stuff. As an overworld kind of player BotW was everything I ever wanted.

I don't think these issues are as bad as people make them out to be. My bigger issue with the 3ds version of MM is the colour palette is all wrong (too bright) and that really robs the game of a lot of its dark, oppressive atmosphere.

The twinmold and gyorg boss fights were more irritating than challenging and just served to waste your time rather than lose an actual threat especially the second stages. The lighting is also an issue with OOT3D but the enhanced textures and models more than made up for it in my opinion

That being said I still enjoyed SS, it’s not a bad game by any means.

2D Zeldas > 3D Zeldas

I like the Oracle games (especially Seasons) but they're obnoxious and tedious in ways that ALTTP or even LA isn't. The animal buddies, shit like the Subrosia segments, etc. They liven up the world which I suspect is why people enjoy the games, but they're just a drag to me and always have been. They're better than The Minish Cap or the DS games, though.

I thought the brighter look suited OoT just fine (though I would prefer the muted palette) but it bothered me more in MM for some reason

I think it would have been better without the motion controls, I feel the same way about the DS games and their stylus controls

I like the overworld stuff in the series; I just don't think BotW did it all that well. I liked how much more organic exploration was compared to the more rigid gate-keeping of the rest of the series, but the overall design just isn't that interesting to me otherwise. The game predicated its priorities on the idea that its vistas alone would be interesting enough, and for me it was not.

I agree that BotW gave the player too much freedom. When I replayed it recently I turned off Revali's Gale, and suddenly I discovered the game had some interesting level design.

Not him but it wasn't built on recycled assets and the impact of the decision with the artstyle is still seen in the series today. MM has yet to have any visible influence on future installments. The 3 day system never returned and Koizumi left to make Mario

I think botw is a better game than ww overall but I find it to be a much more charming game.
