Eventually, like in Fallout, melee gives way to ranged weapons, particularly rifles and guns that have burst.
Still, throwing is a great skill as it encompasses crossbows, thrown weapons and thrown explosives.

What do you mean first big update?
The last update was about 1-2 months ago, where the devs added more places and quests in Dead City.
They probably added some more bugfixes, but there probably won't be any more big updates because they're working on an expansion/sequel comparable to Baldur's Gate's.
