I would not go out if I could not afford a 20% tip, but I do not go out to eat often because I find tipping for basically just bringing a plate to my table and filling up a glass of water once isn't actually worth $5+. I tend to favor fast casual places if I do go out to eat. I can easily afford 20% even though it's a ripoff, but I also feel it's necessary because of the way waitstaff are paid.

I didn't even do it for that reason, I worked as a waiter and standing around being on a constant lookout is very tiring, even more when clients expect instantaneous service. But yeah, when people tipped me I tried to give them a better service.

That is why there are so many career servers, nothing can pay you even close to that for how little skill and experience you need for the job. People would graduate that college and just keep working there part time because their entry level job with their degree was making them half what they made serving.

In countries where the employer actually pays the emplyees they don't expect other people to do it for them. Shocking I know.

I deal with it because I do love cooking, it was always a big hobby of mine. It can be a ridiculously brutal job and there is a lot of bullshit people put up with in the industry. Things like mandatory overtime, unpaid overtime, no holidays off, no breaks. There are basically loopholes they use to get around all the labor laws. Where I live if you work for over 5 hours you are required to have a 30 minute lunch break unpaid and a 15 minute break paid. However since we can "eat on the job" (you fucking can't, you are way too busy) you don't get any breaks at all.

So why people are expected to tip waiters but not supermarket cashiers?

It's even worse than that. I've worked retail, and not only are people not expected to tip the employees, the employees aren't suppose to accept the tips if offered (It was rare, but I did have it happen). Accepting gifts for your job is mentioned as an ethics violation during training.

I was a dishwasher/busboy for about 3 months. Really the worst part about it was dealing with the servers and their retarded he said she said drama shit. It was easy work otherwise, assuming they didn't make me cover for 4 other people not doing their jobs right which happened a lot, in addition to other janitorial cleaning duties if there wasn't anything else to do.

Basically what I'm saying is, actually doing the job I was hired to do was fine but I was stuck doing a whole heap of other dumb shit 70% of the time because the place was run by retards.
