>development was a mess as the main DQ guys were busy with other projects like Chrono Trigger
>weak cast, characters are not as charming as other games
>class system is sort of wonky, not as refined as VII's
>overworld is a slog to traverse though
>story is just okay, not as charming as ones like IV or V
Not a terrible game, just weaker then both those before and after it.

Didn't they revamp the whole engine and moved to a new studio?
Doesn't this game have one of the best visuals on the SNES with DQIII?
Music is also quite nice

It's not bad, the pacing is a little slow at the start (going back and forth from the first and second town). It introduced the Alltrade Abbey which is used in VII and IX, and because it was the first instance it was a little shaky to start.
The characters drop off after the first 3 until the best character (Terry) is introduced who steals the show.
It doesn't have the memorable boss fight that V has and the plot twists are predictable from the start.
The two world mechanic is underutilized and once you can travel freely between them it just becomes twice as many areas with half as much content.
It's not "bad" but it just pales in comparison to V

>class system is sort of wonky, not as refined as VII's
I'm thinking of buying it after I finish V, can you explain this part?

I can see why it's not too liked since it had to follow up on V, but I liked it more than IX and VIII.

>It introduced the Alltrade Abbey
Alltrades Abbey was in III, but VI was the first game The Hero could change classes there.

I can't understand why anyone would prefer IV over it. IV is a classic no doubt, since it was for the Famicom, but VI had an interesting gimmick, and more memorable designs, as well as a more free style of playing.

Because people forget how horrifying 2 was

OG WHM a cute tho

I liked it

It's not bad. But it's biggest issue is it's rather uneven pacing from start to finish.

The battle system is alright and you can see the seeds planted in it that eventually got refined in VII but it's still kinda rough. I guess you can say the actual cast is somewhat lacking though.

>buying free games
lol

K. Now explain the class system.

Is that Vegito Blue with a fucking sword?

Everyone in DQ is just a Dragon Ball character.

Es Joven Gohan Super Saiyajin Forma 2 Azul con Espada.

Or maybe, just maybe we're all real

It's just Toriyama's distinctive art.

It's been said thousands of times, get new material.

It has an amazing first 20% and an awesome last 20%.
The 60% in the middle is an aimless slog from completely isolated plot-town to completely isolated plot-town with barely any hints to send you in any way in particular.

VII has a similar problem with isolated sections, but that's part of the game's plot AND it has a sort of "hub world" so it doesn't feel as disconnected.

Is 7 on the 3ds any good?

Because VII does everything VI does better.

Take a shower, I can smell you from here.

It subtly makes everything just a little easier to follow.
It's still a LONG LONG game, but I had a good time with it.

Not him, but the problem with the classes, and one of the bigger design flaws, is that a shit ton of skills are just absolutely useless. I've said this before in other threads, but it starts taking pages out of Final Fantasy design by making bosses past the halfway mark in the game basically immune to everything except a handful of skills. This makes only a handful of classes actually viable, so your endgame team is liable to be comprised of like, 2-3 classes total over 8 characters. Additionally, classing INTO the useful classes requires you to grind earlier classes to master them before you have access.

A lot of the skills are pretty shitty even when working as intended. Many of them do piddling damage, and some of them do piddling damage and NO additional effects like tripping or blinding. And even if you try to just cast on yourself, a lot of the bosses will trigger a disrupting wave for free, meaning they do that AND still get their 2-3 attacks that round with few exceptions.

I'm overblowing some of this, but there's so many, many tiny little things that just don't fit with the standard Dragon Quest spirit that it becomes death by 1000 cuts.

Playing snes version right now. I beat the nes game last year. I enjoy it a whole lot.

It's not even a bad game really. Just the worst DQ. It does have the coolest secret boss though if you ask me.

DQ2's last quarter is hell. That alone makes it a rival for worst DQ.

But yeah, there are no bad DQs.

>Just the worst DQ
That's still 2 user. But 6 is probably very close.

>It does have the coolest secret boss though if you ask me.
Agreed however.

2,4,7 and 9 exist so it can't be the worst

>4
Motherfucker I will fight you to death

How can anyone say 6 is worse than 1? 1 is only memorable because of what it created, but as a game it's clearly worse.

The structure is clunky, the Hero's late introduction makes him feel a lot boring than usual and Psaro has the shittiest design in any final boss. The music is one of the best though.

>linear and segregated trash that is 4
4 is one of the worst

The Hero's introduction gives them a sense of personal loss that just keeps developing thorough the story.
But more importantly it makes the side characters shine that much brighter. The only group that measures up showed up in 8.

only viii is better if you ask me, did not play 1-3, 4 is definitely the worst
