The protagonist kinda pisses me off. Particularly in Ai’s route. Seriously the girl is bending over backwards to make him happy and he he keeps going on about how he hates seeing her fight.

Fate/stay night is a sort of unusual VN in that rather than doing what you want to do, the VN expects you to do what the protagonist would normally want to do. Acting out of character can end up destroying you. Nasu doesn't quite grasp the concept of what a self-insert is.

That part irritated me, yeah. Yamato did some questionable things, but he never tried to change a girl to suit his tastes. He was someone who accepted everything about someone and supported them wholeheartedly. If you're trying to force someone to change and mold them into your ideal, then you never loved that person to begin with.
