Villager, Inkling, etc are just ordinary Nintendo characters so they don't have to be a big deal, but third parties should be more special. Like look at Monster Hunter, Sakurai could of easily gotten a playable character out of it, something similar to what we saw in MVCI, but instead he opted just to represent it with an assist trophy and a boss in the single-player modes. Which makes sense, considering the main draw of the series is fighting/hunting monsters, certainly not it's main characters. Likewise, the main appeal of Minecraft is the environments, not Steve.

And no, Hero doesn't really count for this because Luminary, Erdrick, Solo and Eight are all technically characters with esablished appearances and backstories, they're just all silent protagonists. So in that sense, they're more akin to Link than they are to Steve or Monster Hunter.
