Is there no audience for this anymore? Was it swallowed up by Battlefield? Objective-based and class-based shooters are still popular even in the wake of the battle royale genre, and a more median TTK compared to Overwatch's glacial gameplay or Counter-Strike's fractions-of-a-second shootout could give it its own niche for its class-based gameplay, alongside TF2's focus on high damage medium/close-range hitscan and projectiles.

Dirty Bomb could have actually worked, just needed the devs to not suck terribly and actually polish their product. Sure it wouldn't have 500k players or whatever, but there have been tons of f2p games that went on fine for years with a few thousand concurrent players.

I'm getting really close to downloading WolfET for the first time. Are there any guides out there for noobs? I don't need to be the best in the world, but I want to be competent. I've played TF2 and RTCW for thousands of hours, so I'm familiar with general class-based FPS gameplay.

Because zoomers need a hand in everything and they can't figure stuff on their own when everything is written ingame just go to the limbo menu and read bottom left about what's the objective

NQ is a fucking timeless mod

Not that hard to get into, just pick medic so you can self heal and you're good to go. Having decen aim helps. Only real barrier is the godawful viewkick when you get shot.

Splash Damage were always incompetent and with no mod support to fix brink/brink lite (dirty bomb) the games died because they are absolute garbage.

I only play on jaymod 1 just because i have an ultrawide monitor and i need a 140 fov and all the other servers limit it to 120-90 and NQ just rapes my UI with maximum starching but slient hardcore is fun af even though it's vomit inducing

I'd argue that the main game is fine enough for casual play. The power of W:ET liest in modding and custom maps though, I don't know if any other game has more varied maps than ET. Fucking Minas Tirith man.

thanks, any tips on playing the objective? Been watching some gameplay, and I'll hear voice lines about capturing the forward bunker, but it's not clicking in my head what the objective is. Does it depend on the map? How many gamemodes are there?

I mean it's not a hero shooter and unlike TF2 the classes don't really have extremely distinct niches and abilities where Soldier gets the rocket launcher and 200 HP and stuff like that. If you played RTCW's multiplayer you should be pretty familiar as it is.

On custom maps just fellow the players and look what they're doing and support them and on stock maps it's a pretty straight forward map design, desu wolf ET was my first shooter experience i glad i didn't play trash as my first shooter

TF2 has the worst tutorial system I've ever seen, and it's still popular with zoomers

open the map, its not like its very big. the only class you need is medic, engineer if you have to demolish something. if you are not medic its normal to just die.

Ingame menu with classes & map usually has this little box that adresses every single map objective in proggresive order
Good idea is also sometimes just pop into spectators and roam around the map, inspecting shit and watching players carefully

I played ET since 2006 so i obviously know all this but still the game doesn't teach anything to new players because the mentality isn't the same as it was with 2004
I agree the tutorial is complete dogshit on tf2 but at least it teaches you the the basics like using demo stickys on walls as in ET you pretty much expected to know everything because the game was meant for the RTCW veterans

Awesome, I think I'll start out with medic since it seems to be the most straight forward, although since I'm a Soldier main in TF2, using a panzer once in a while might be fun too.

the problem with dirty bomb was that nexon in their classic shitty fashion restricted the dev team
when the dev team finally freed itself from nexon it was too little too late

All that Nexon did was publishing the game anyway, and development was in some ways even shittier after Nexon left. The mercs they introduced afterward were mostly badly designed.

Probably more like they're just more interested in making single player stuff. Doing online co-op with Youngblood is practically new territory for them in the new decade.
Even back when the MG guys were still with Starbreeze most of their notable stuff were single player titles like Chronicles of Riddick or the Darkness, and beyond that they also did the Quake anniversary episode and some support work on Doom '16. They're a small studio best served doing single player stuff.

They namedrop Enemy Territory a lot, naturally, but honestly I don't think every developer should be forced to do multiplayer shit. Look at what happened to Fallout or Doom.

I don't think that ET would be possible with id tech 7 the multiplayer component of doom 2016 was shitty enough and had a low tickrate, I don't even know if an ET remake would be possible with the garbage modern engines unless ID makeover their entire multiplayer structure for their next engine upgrade, also zero chance for open source or a community SDK because it's a closed source property of zenimax or however they're called

Nexon didn't even publish it, the deal they had with SD was a partnership. Nexon handled community stuff, promotion, and servers, that was it. I'm guessing they're the ones that pushed for the game to launch into OB so early, but SD still mismanaged the project terribly.

Still seems like it was a big financial success for them anyway, which is weird because the game had fucking nothing worth spending money on. I guess it doesn't really matter when it was handled by a skeleton crew for most of its life, you don't need a lot of people buying ridiculously overpriced cases and horrendous obisidians to make a profit when you only have, like, 10 employees working on the game.

I hope they don't mess up their new IP since they finally have a chance to make something for the long-term.

I think its mix of factors
ET doesn't adhere to either popular formula norms of quasi-realistic FPS games like CoD, Battlefield or even Counter Strike cuz ET is still a Quake game at heart, or the games with more sci-fi/fantasy stylization and game mechanics liberty like Halo, TF2 or Overwatch. It's just floating there inbetween
ET is also a game, where teamplay is absolute must. You can carry and outplay fucks in CoD, CS or Overwatch and just dominate, but in ET it's nigh on impossible cuz of how heavily consecutive-objectives based the game is. Not even the best of skilled players can outdo a well coordinated play

It's still KINDA possible if you're a engineer rusher versus a team of noobs on a map without a vehicle escort

Dirty Bomb was ultimately fucked because they went with Nexon. By the time the devs got their game back the damage was done. It was easily the best class/hero shooter we've seen in a while.

Development was still shit even after Nexon left. Turtle, Javelin and Hunter were all badly designed.

I think the mechanics could be added to something new but Splash Damage are painfully inept at R&D and game design. I would love to see a proper take on the style but that's not happening anytime soon especially after SD screwed Dirty Bomb up so badly it would scare away any potential publisher.

Health doesn'r regenerate, ammo gets scarce, lots of great options how to smoke a sole fucker in one/few hits like panzer, flamba, airstrike or just grenades/rifle grenades. Sole engi may get to the objective and plant a bomb, but he also has to defend it with limited resources that even the greatest of noobs can usually overcome

SD retained the rights to the IP as well as full creative control during their entire partnership with Nexon. They threw Nexon under the bus when they got acquired and broke off their partnership because it sounds a lot better for marketing, and nobody's going to bat an eyelid over someone shit talking Nexon.

I'm sure Nexon deserves their share of the blame, but SD were far from faultless over the handling of DB.
