Cope

Thought not my personal favorite, both these are pretty deserving titles

>outdated
still has the most interactive world of just about any rpg ever.

But Final Fantasy 6 had that opera scene!

Although I don’t necessarily agree I really can’t argue that they have bad tastes

Would dark souls be considered an rpg?

Every single FF game I've played except II was better than VI; I still don't understand what people see in it other than muh boomer nostalgia

It’s outdated garbage that nobody has ever played

jrpgs are not rpgs

That’s because you are a contrarian seething that a game you never played is ranked higher than your Favourite

Ahem

Attached: chrono.png (1400x600, 326K)

Cope more WRPG-Kun

>the Dragon Quest team and secondary Square members make a better Final Fantasy game than the Final Fantasy team
>it still hasn't been surpassed by any later FF games
Not a big surprise since lots of other JRPG series like Suikoden, Dragon Quest and etc are better than Final Fantasy at their own game, despite smaller budgets.

I like that game, I also like this game

Knowing IGN, I'm not even surprised.

I did play VI, you nigger, and it had underwhelming dumbed down gameplay compared to almost every game that preceded it and a boring plot that falls apart in the second half and never recovers. At least when people shill Tactics, I can see where they're coming from, but not with VI.

Just Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI.

real talk

Attached: final-fantasy-v-snes-title-1597.gif (256x224, 10K)

The fact that it makes you seethe so bad proves it’s a amazing game

this

If it's only limited to the SNES, then this would be accurate.
7 is better than both.
Dues Ex is better than all 3.

Nice samefag

Ultima VII

9 is the best ff, prove me wrong

Final Fantasy honestly has shit gameplay and level design. Why do people still pretend to like them, knowing this? I'm afraid for RPGs because people think that Final Fantasy is meant to be the highest standard.

Great taste.
What are some other games that have a great job system like FFV, FFT, FFX-2, BD and BS

I guess that's where all the gamefaqs fags went to kek.
Its not so bad a pick.

RPGs are not role-playing games in that sense either. "RPG mecahnics" are not literally role-playing mechhanics, they're tabletop wargame mechanics that are pretty much the opposite of roleplaying. It's all misnomers and nonsense that stuck for historical reasons.

FF7

Skyrim is the only WRPG to gross a billion dollars that’s how horrible your shit genre is

>DURRR ME LIKE FF6, ME NOT MAINSTREAM AND ME NOT LIME FF7
Ff6 sucks ass and both 5 and 7 are much better than it.

Shut the fuck up, reddit. All JRPGs are awful cringe garbage where you press X to win for 40 hours and there's zero level design or gameplay mechanics happening.

FF6 made over 600 million dollars how is it not mainstream?

The difference is wrpg has those mechanics based on table top. jrpgs do not. they do not have character building, consequences, multiple solutions for a problem, or anything to facilitate an interactive world. They are visual novels except you have to grind via menu based combat to progress. absolutely the most worthless genre

>and a boring plot that falls apart in the second half and never recovers.
You just described nearly every FF game. Especially Tactics.

anyone over the age of 18 has played it

for me its the Morrowind

Attached: alex-cristi-es-spellsword-1.jpg (1920x1252, 241K)

Delusion

Boring and derivative. 8, 9, and 10 were when square starting getting big heads and focusing on story and style over substance. They're extremely feature-light compared to other jrpgs of the era.

Of course its mainstream, most fags who think FF6 is the best are just contrarians going against the popularity of 7

no it's pic related

Attached: p3p_mem_1280x1024.jpg (1280x1024, 645K)

underage

Maybe greatest jrpg, but never the greatest RPG.

I fucken can't because you're correct

This is completely false unless you're accounting for the historical context it came in. If you're measuring just on it's own worth as it stands today, there's just too many games that are better. Not even top 10.

The fact that you call it overrated means it has been too highly rated. Countless "journalists" call it the best FF game. And it's because it's the most popular and best selling one. "Journalists" just play it safe and hype what the fans hype. This proves that FFVII is considered the best by a lot of people.

>random encounters

Attached: a6d.png (2550x1650, 377K)

I just don't get how it turns into this neverending feedback loop where the same few games top the same lists year after year. You'd think tastes would change with time as new games come out and more old games are rediscovered, but it's always the same shit

FF6 & Chrono Trigger have reached Ocarina of Time levels of acclaim, so even if a better RPG comes out people will never admit it & they will still be listed as the GOAT

Because the media creates and feeds the loop. The people with the microphone dictate what's popular. And the only people who care about ranking and top 10 lists are their sheep audience.

The vast majority of people don't care about gaming "journalists" or ranking stuff. Just the kind of people who watch the Spike Awards or read IGN.

I understand that, but I don't see what investment they have in a game like FFVI to keep sucking its dick over and over again.

You're not gonna believe me, but it's the honest truth. I was shocked. Stay away from the sequel though.

Attached: IMG_0018.png (1024x768, 156K)

it would be if the gameplay were any faster. 9 is so slow it's almost unplayable.

>but I don't see what investment they have in a game like FFVI to keep sucking its dick over and over again.
But most don't. Most of the media focuses on FFVII or X. A few sites put FFVI up to act like they're going against the FFVII hype or because they want to look old school. But it changes based on who's doing it. IGN has done similar lists in the past where they put FFVII on the top. This "greatest of all time" list gets remade every 5 years or so. Which is also why it's a joke.

Take a look at this picture for example, and notice how many of the same games are listed at the top of every list. It's funny how you aren't even wrong, in the sense that everyone has the same taste

Attached: Top-20-Game-Lists.jpg (3000x1460, 3.59M)

I'm playing it for the first time, just about to do opera and I'm struggling to find the will to play
Does it get better? I'm not really a JRPG fan but I figured I should try one of the ones everyone raves about. I loved Chrono Trigger

Every single IGN list since 2003 has had Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger as the top RPGs, FF7 in most cases didn't even make the top 100

what the fuck are you talking about? FF6 was made by the original FF director. Who also directed 9 btw.

>that many with Ocarina of Time at #1
It took me years to finish that game cause it was just so boring, almost every other game on that list has a much more exhilarating world and adventure than Ocarina

Attached: 133669863273.gif (480x360, 2.18M)

-Very little combat, which wouldn't be bad except they put a system in where you need to fight battles to gain skills. You actually have to stop and grind a lot, because there's so few battles in between triggered events. You can go all the way through Disk 1 fighting less than 100 battles...and you have gear that takes 120-200 battles to complete.
-Focuses on linear set pieces, which wouldn't be bad except the quality falls after Disk 1.
-Story is a shameless copy Dragon Ball.
-Story falls apart halfway through. That's typical for the FF series, but still means FFIX is flawed.

He's saying Chrono Trigger is better than any Final Fantasy game. Lern 2 red.

I feel the same way about Majora's Mask

but FF6 didnt have any Dragon Quest team members

He's not talking about FFVI, you dunce. He said Chrono Trigger is better than any FF game.

FF2. It simply cuts out the middle man and makes you create your own jobs

>shit difficulty
>shit blue magic system
>really weird story pacing
>last act feels real rushed

Visual and Audio is defiantly top tier. And some story beats are good. But I think it's just so niche it gets overrated.

Where you wonder if it'd be better to revisit the old games to fix up or just let em be.

"the most respected" is not "the best"

>everything popular is overrated
how to know if you might just be a chronic contrarian

If you played them when they came out you'd understand.

There was just nothing like firing it up for the first time. Beating the Deku Tree, then going out into Hyrule Field, it feeling vast. Even though looking now it's just a big empty nothing.

Can we please stop pretending that any 2D game could ever be the best anything?

Jrpgs are only one step above visual novels, they shouldn't be considered rpgs at all.

How many final fantasy game are there? What should I do if I want to start playing the franchise for the first time? What the fuck is this?

>horrible sequel

why the fuck did people praise this in the 90s?

>what the fuck happened capcom...?
Dragon Quarter

This is unironically a very good jrpg
There's so much story, lore character development, item builds, party combinations, fantastic music, etc
Like there's a shit ton of content here and it just keeps getting bigger

I don't do any of the super grind mobile stuff and haven't spent a cent on this game and it's worth it just for how much story there is for free it's astounding.
If the gacha stuff wasn't there so I could get the characters I want it'd be a true 10/10 JRPG game. But like every other game it has its faults

Attached: Granblue_Fantasy_logo.png (273x187, 63K)

inuyasha???

I loved OOT, it's a masterpiece & the GOAT. But Majora's Mask is fucking boring
I love how WRPG-cucks are always the ones seething about JRPG's being acclaimed

I played OoT like 15 years after it came out for the first time and while I thought it was a great game, not just for the time it came out but as it was when I played it, it was by no means worthy of being almost every publications #1 best game ever

They're all self contained titles unless stated otherwise in the damn title, you dumbass

>Dragon Quarter
Pleb filter: the game

So what's the concept then? Can I arbitrarily start from the 8th game and enjoy it?

It's actually one of the few things I agree on for IGN. FFVI does have the best story of all FF games.

>not FF7

Does anyone else miss the era of Yea Forums when FF7 was the most popular JRPG ever and all Yea Forums ever did was be contrarian and whine about how much the game sucked? Cuz I do. I think 6 is kind of fucking boring and has way too many characters that don't even seem important to the plot. Now everybody thinks it's fucking amazing after Yea Forums spent a decade straight riding its dick.

- If you're smart about your equipment setups you don't need to grind at all, game can be very easily played through
- There's a clear story path set out from the start of disc 1 til the end of disc 3, will agree that disc 4 feels like an afterthought though in ways
- Dragon Ball was about a dying planet attempting to fuse another planet, then installing a giant tree to disrupt its souls returning to the crystal so the process could be completed? Ok.

Final Fantasy 6 is the shark jump. From being long slogs of adventures with almost zero plot in the way or to lighter mostly comedic characterization in the early SNES games, FFVI is the point the series decided to be stupid fucking melodrama more concerned with the narrative than the game.

Yes. They only share similar enemies and reoccuring names.

Persona 4 because it made me feel like I had friends.

I really want to play BoF 2 because it has the best version of Nina but everyone says the translation job is outrageously bad and makes the game almost unplayable at times.

It's impossible to go back and play 9 because the battles are so slow.

There is a fan translation of the SNES version.

Emulate that

I mean, I was able to understand what was going on as a kid, but yeah, it's not the best. I kind of like it though, the stilted dialogue kind of adds a certain characterization to the game that makes the characters endearing in a way. It's hard to explain.

Ayla makes my WEE WEE HARD!!!!!!!!

Attached: maxresdefault2.jpg (1280x720, 165K)

I know it's a hot take on Yea Forums but I don't think either of them are overrated, they really deserve all the praise they get

IGN might be fucking morons, but they know how to get attention.

You haven't played the MMO huh.

This was taken from journalists actually, no Nintendo game was ever listed on the 13 lists about overrated games except Smash, Pokemon, Twilight Princess & Skyward Sword

>- Dragon Ball was about a dying planet attempting to fuse another planet, then installing a giant tree to disrupt its souls returning to the crystal so the process could be completed? Ok.
An alien is sent to a planet to scout it and eventually take it over with his superior power. He ends up going native and forgets his mission. So a second alien comes along to do the job the first one should have done. They both have monkey tails.

FF7 fags are delusional, your shit game has never been as acclaimed as FF6 & Chrono Trigger

Are you implying FFXI or XIV are the best MMO? Because if so, that's really sad.

7 is better than 6 and CT is better than both.

I love JRPGs retard, still shouldn't be considered rpgs and definitely nowhere near the top of a list of best rpgs of all time.

It's stupid to not separate WRPGs and JRPGs. They really are 2 different genres. It's not just a meme to say that.

See , FF7 is babby’s first RPG & is nowhere near as popular as FF6, ME2, Witcher 3 or Chrono Trigger

I finished Chrono Trigger recently and got the developer ending alongside the general one after you save Crono. Should I even bother getting the others?

I've not even played VII, but it ain't Terra repping FF in Smash

stay mad baby

Attached: 1560686402367.png (1280x938, 981K)

>that nobody has ever played

It sold like a million or 2 at retail, which was insane back then. It was one of the biggest RPGs ever, especially from its time. It was one of the biggest selling RPGs of the early 90s. I think the only other RPG that outsold it was another game from the same series.

I'm talking about 10+ years ago. Not today.

Chrono Trigger is literally babby's first JRPG,entry level as fuck

That Opera scene was very very good.

see

just finished this last month
pretty good, but the normal encounters are even more braindead easy than on your typical jrpg

Zidane's mission is similar to that of Goku, correct, to wipe out as many to increase the flow of souls. Kuja is actually responsible for dropping Zidane on Gaia. He then continues to "obey" Garland while meanwhile trying to find a power to overthrow him.
That's just Zidane's personal backstory however, not FFIX's overall storyline.

>I love JRPGs retard, still shouldn't be considered rpgs
Most WRPGs aren't RPGs either, especially most of the critically acclaimed ones.
Conversely, there's many JRPGs that absolutely shit all over most WRPGs when it comes to being actual roleplaying games, which WRPGs also largely forgot when U7 came around and infected the genre with the life sim disease that it's still plaguing it to this day.

Imagine seething this bad

Woah they picked something that isn't absolute shit.
Amazing!

I'm not convinced, how about a kotaku or polygon article as well? That'll really prove your point.

> Sales = Acclaim
Typical FF7 fags, by this logic FFX shits all over FF7 since it made more money

No. FFVI is a bad game and is responsible for normalizing the almost complete lack of care for gameplay the majority of FFs after it had.

just remember people like you are infinitely the joke of others. theres a reason why this game series is still selling like shit. its because its shit tier gameplay is used as a vehicle for a bunch of incel losers to roleplay as if they have friends in a video game since they dont have any irl.

FFVII is talked about 10x more than FFVI. You're the reason people cry about FFVI fans being so loud and obnoxious. Because you claim FFVI is both the most popular game, but also overlooked and under appreciated.

>ff best rpg
>literally the most basic, simple entry-level jrpg ever

>FF7 has never been as acclaimed as FF6 & Chrono Trigger

It was #1 on nearly every professional "best games of all time" list for around half a decade after its release, maybe more. It wasn't until Half-Life 2 that you started seeing it pretty much universally fall off that spot. And it wasn't until the 7th generation that you saw it stop placing in the top 10 regularly.

I'm the original guy who posted that. I was saying Chrono Trigger was a better FF game than FF games are. It's basically what Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama and Masato Kato would do if they made a Final Fantasy game.

Chrono Trigger was intended to be a mixing of the ideas in Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. And used stuff like the ATB system, similar items and so on. It can be considered a FF spin off in the same way as something like Bravely Default.

Considering 100% of the reason that Cloud made it in was because of a literal popularity poll, I'd say it's a pretty good metric of judging which game is more popular

Even though I disagree it sure would be nice if the endgame content of ffvii actually focused around the actually focused around the actual combat system instead of a bunch of absolutely braindead sidequests. I dont even dislike ffvii but it drops the ball on the third disc.

Play Ryusui's fan translation
he's a good friend of mine and deserves attention for his work

Every single one plays differently, but I love V, and so does most everyone who says they've played it. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about the game. Play the GBA version, it has more content

Pretty sure 7 has the most famous death in vidya next to John Marston.

You're retarded.

Your only argument is that Cloud is in a crossover fighting game that has plenty of characters that are bad, stupid, or nobody cares about. Laughing at you for saying that is just as valid of an argument as your own retarded post.

Attached: Brain Damage.jpg (600x604, 52K)

>IGNoramus loves FF6

Yikes, so this explains why 6 fanboys always go full retard.

I started playing through the FFs recently with preconceived notions that 4, 6, and 7 are very loved, though many saying 7 is overrated, and that 2, 8, and 13 are generally hated (never played them before so no nostalgia). Beat all of them but 10 (just got to Zanarkand), 11, and 12, and I consider 6 pretty low tier, along with 3 and 4. It's not even the best SNES title, that would be 5. 7 is actually not overrated at all, it's fucking fantastic, despite thinking it would be shit and overrated, though I did play with a fan retranslation. But I think 2 is pretty good, FF8 is great, and 13 is underrated, but maybe not great.

Despite the cutscenes in 10 being janky as fuck, some of the last few scenes have been pretty touching and I'm starting to get attached to three characters, so I can finallly see why it's so praised.

The, we don't want to give #1 to CT because everyone says that, but still want to give it to a 16 bit SNES game for credibility, contrarian opinion.

The true #1

Cloud literally puts the J in JRPG.

And that character wouldn't have died in the first place if she wasn't a complete retard. Just because a death scene is famous doesn't mean it's justified, good, or well-written.

Final Fantasies are never even the best RPG of their year, forget of all time.

whats even the argument here? in no world is vi more popular than vii and some outlets lists dont change that, get a fucking grip

Implying you can name anything better.

Cloud won via a popularity poll. Stay mad.

>Cloud literally puts the J in JRPG.
>Cloud
>J
What? If you're trying to claim Cloud popularized JRPGs, you're wrong. Dragon Quest is what popularized RPGs in Japan. And Pokemon is more popular than Final Fantasy is.

grasp harder

No, the first half is a slog, the esper system is awkward (GF system in FF8 exaggerated its flaws) and there are too many playable-characters with backstories and motivations that get maybe a paragraph's worth of exposition. FF5 was a far better-rounded game and side-quests flesh out each of the party members beyond their interactions in the main story.

Popularity doesn't equal quality, just look at PUBG and half of what EA and Bethesda publish nowadays.

6 is popular not because it's good but because it had no competition whatsoever in the west when it came out. It's nowhere near as popular in Japan for a reason.

MMOs AND JRPGs filter the absolute FUCK out of retard norms so that guy has probably never played them.

Game is basic as fuck. You just choose a good move you have and spam unless you need to heal. Why is it so beloved?

>Dragon Quest is what popularized RPGs
>I-in Japan

FF7 popularised JRPGs worldwide.
Nobody gave a fuck about Pokemon in 1997.

Cloud is the stereotypical JRPG archetype. Twink fuccboi with an oversized sword. Settle down DQfag.

>if you point out FFXIV is a WoW clone, you're retarded
Then you're saying Yoshida, the head of FFXIV, is retarded. Good job.

Any other way to play this? Game resets every time I lock my phone screen.

All these lists and top x always have the same few titles and it's boring af.

I don't care about your stupid shit, I simply said her death is the most popular death it vidya. I never said anything else. You just decided to get asshurt and attack the character's motivations for whatever reason.

Thanks to Sony for marketing it like crazy. You retards shouldn't be under the impression the game sold itself because it was so good. It was pushed immensily hard as a big game for the PlayStation, that's why it sold so well and why it became the most popular -> biggest fanbase.

t. VII fan who's also a real nigga.

Nobody gave a fuck about DQ either, outside of Japan.

>FF7 popularised JRPGs worldwide.
Debatable when Pokemon came out just a year later and sold 3x as much. But there was also dozens of other JRPGs that came out in the same generation. No one is disputing FFVII sold well. But one game didn't make JRPGs popular. It was gradual over many games.

>Cloud is the stereotypical JRPG archetype.
He's ONE of the stereotypes. And Cloud didn't create that stereotype. Just like Aeris wasn't the first death scene in a JRPG and Tifa isn't the first girl with big tits. You guys just think FFVII invented all these things because it's the first JRPG you played.

The game sold through word of mouth as much as it did through marketing. It wouldn't have sold as much if it wasn't actually a great game, you dumb nigger.

Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's good.

It's funny because Yea Forums doesn't like your piece of shit game either

Attached: OverratedvStrawpoll.jpg (1314x804, 133K)

I distinctively remember everybody shitting on it when it came out. I didn't play it for years after it came out because I was under the impression that it was bad due to everybody saying that it was bad, which is why it confuses me that everybody acts like it was an instant hit now.

>He's ONE of the stereotypes.

List the others, and list other deaths in JRPGs that are as well-known as 7's.

No. Nº1 is Fallout. Then we can talk Fallout 2, Arcanum, New Vegas, Gothic, amongst others. But no JRPG other than Dark Souls deserves to be mentioned.

Yea Forums is full of teenagers, resetera trannies, and redditors now, and has been for the last 5 or 6 years.

>all this butthurt over FF7

It's beautiful.

Attached: 1560712852571.jpg (5002x5002, 2.22M)

>"FFVIII sold nearly as much, therefor it's a great game"
by your logic, also Sony pushed a million into marketing this game. Don't play yourself.

>Debatable when Pokemon came out just a year later and sold 3x as much.

Attached: 1561531683803.jpg (331x132, 5K)

Yea Forums has had traceable Reddit presence for eight years since Shazbowl and all that really happened was Yea Forums got even more obsessed with Reddit than ever before
Yea Forums has always been full of teenagers, if anything the average "adult" writing-style of Yea Forums posts has gotten more prevalent but has filled the gap with three-layers-of-irony Twitter memery
"Resetera trannies" is the current Reddit as a boogeyman to point to

>word of mouth doesn't count

God, you're desperate. There have been plenty of games that flopped despite huge marketing budgets, because they were bad games.

I have to correct myself by the way. The advertising budget was a 100 million dollars. Look it up.

don't forget /pol/tards

and also by the guy's logic FFXV is also a great game when it's still an unfinished trainwreck

Attached: Hold O to Win.webm (640x360, 2.66M)

>List the others
Dragon Quest is what set swordsman as the standard for JRPGs. As well as mute protagonists. Final Fantasy just tried to be different from this by having their protagonists talk and be designed different. But even then, Cloud isn't the first to use an oversized sword or being super skinny. Fun fact, Dragon Quest also did Sephiroth before FFVII.

>and list other deaths in JRPGs that are as well-known as 7's.
I didn't say well known. I said it wasn't the first. Aeris dies in exactly the same way as Aria in Final Fantasy III. Then you also have the rebel leader in FFII, half the cast in FFIV, Galuf in FFV and so on.

By the time FFVII came along, the death scene was an overused trope in the series. And that's just Final Fantasy. Many other JRPG series had done it as well. Dragon Quest and Suikoden had more impacting death scenes than anything in Final Fantasy. FFVII is remembered more not because the scene itself is ground-braking, but because it was the most advertised game up to that point. Until Pokemon topped it a year later.

Attached: psaro_sephiroth.jpg (620x320, 35K)

no shit sherlock
the point still stands
you don't magically break sales records simply by throwing money into marketing
the fucking game itself has to be good too so those sales keep coming

weird I kept hearing how great it was and that's why I bought it

Final Fantasy VII for comparison only had a 92 despite being every normalfags first RPG

>the game with the most marketing and hype sells the best, not the game with the highest review rating
What a shock. It's almost like reviewers aren't as important as they think they are...

It's pretty funny. I people are just mad 6 or CT aren't getting a full-scale remake. I have a feeling CT is next considering how many fan projects Squeenix has killed over the years.

what ass did you pull this list from

>I people

I think* people

>GBA version
Shit taste

GameFaqs is literally FF7 & OOT central, and they still had FF7 rated lower than Final Fantasy VI & Chrono Trigger

CT should've been first, and FF7 second.

it's another "sales only matter when they work for my argument" episode

Agreed.

GameRankings, every game with a 95 on that website has a 97 on Metacritic. So i just went down the line & adjusted the scores accordingly

>4 longswords
>just click on the enemy
>glorious victory

considering world building, lore and quests. Sure Ultima is great, but the rest is shit.

Really bothers me how games aren't retroactively rated without nostalgia getting in the way. Stuff released today is called clunky and poor, but release it in 1997 and every journalist is saying "brilliant" and "ahead of its time".

Agree, FF7 fags proving that they are delusional as always

Attached: Screenshot_2019-07-03 Game Rankings - GameFAQs.png (856x1570, 104K)

it's another "scores only matter when they work for my argument" episode

>Chrono Trigger twice

Chrono Trigger doesn't need a remake. If they try to remake it, I will officially disown Square forever. FFVII actually needs a remake to fix a lot of issues the original game had. But Square beinf Square, they'll change the stuff that shouldn't be changed and keep all the flaws intact. This is why they should NEVER touch Chrono Trigger.

FFVI and Chrono Cross could also use remakes, but again, do not let modern Square touch them.

The argument is literally about critical acclaim, best game lists & review scores is the only metric of what is considered the best

CT would definitely be the next biggest possible remake from them. I have a feeling FF8 is up there too.

Chrono Trigger, Suikoden II and Dragon Quest VIII should be at the top. No FF game should even be on the list.

Where is this hype again?

reasonable.

Wild Arms XF

>Suikoden

This, nobody cares about FF7 Remake they are just seething over the censorship bullshit. Yea Forums only cares about Smash, Metroid Prime 4, Cyberpunk & BOTW 2

it's a popular enemy
stay mad

If I keep saying nobody cares, maybe it will be true!

A series that does everything Final Fantasy tries to do, but better. You not knowing about it just proves how the only JRPGs you know are popular Square games.

DQV > DQVIII

Cope more Snoy, there hasn't been a single FF7 Remake thread that wasn't solely about Tifa being censored

what're you gonna do now

It's a pretty fantastic JRPG. Lots of secrets, great music, cool art style, lots of customization with the esper system, and the game kicks you square in the feels a dozen times.

By the time I got to Kefka my team was 5x overlevelled with all the best gear but it was still a great finale.

Edgar, Locke, Gau, Tetra, Setzer, Celes, Gogo, Mog... so many well written characters. As far as story driven JRPGs go I'd say it's definitely one of the best.

Attached: 3082160-laconcept.jpg (1327x728, 494K)

oh, you think popularity = a game being good
got it

There was one 2 hours ago that wasn't about Tifa, but whatever helps you cope.

oh, you think niche = a game being good
got it

>FFVI
>well written
You've got to be trolling. It's like Chrono Cross. 3/4 the cast is pointless and filler. And on top of that, the western translation is butchered to high heaven. So you don't even know what the original intention was for most of the story.

Oh, I forgot. Final Fantasy fans think stuff like "Son of a Submariner" and "Let's Mosey" are the peak of writing.

Attached: facepalm_rassie.png (559x597, 568K)

Ironic, because I'm actually triggered.

>Suikoden II

By your logic, basically anything below Final Fantasy is niche. Like Souls, Persona or Tales.

Attached: laughing_(girls).gif (386x232, 2.72M)

what's wrong with let's mosey
stick too far up your own ass?

Suikoden is niche.

How can it be contrarian when the single most normalfag gaming website on the internet that everyone on r/gaming uses, has FF6 significantly higher than FF7?

The criticisms in are valid in regards to story pacing but regardles of that BoF 4 is amazing and if the story wasn't so so it'd be better than 3

Also honorable mention to Suikoden, a series of great JRPGs that killed itself with one title even though the one after it is arguably the best one

Having 5 options but 4 of them don't accomplish anything is not customization.

it's IGN..

It wasn't what Cloud originally said in Japanese. The context was changed on the whim of the translator. But FFVII fans then use statements like that as the basis for Cloud's personality.

Basically, Cloud's personality is different in Japanese. And when the remake comes out with a new translation, people are going to throw a huge fit over how Cloud has been changed. When their perception was based on an inaccurate translation and blocky character animation.

uggg please be careful
you may cut yourself with that edge

>It wasn't what Cloud originally said in Japanese

oh no how horrible
people like the line because it's retarded you idiot

have sex jrpgcels

I loved DQIX, but I know a lot of people hated it.

It had so many unique classes to choose from and multi-layered combat. Example: Stealing items and using them in combat was actually a mechanic and not just an afterthought.

If they spent a little more time on the writing and fleshed out the personalities of your teammates instead of just having them be blank slates it would be 10/10 IMO

Attached: 1560728018267.jpg (2020x897, 430K)

give it a fucking rest

IT SAYS SO ON THE FUCKING BOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1997 JOURNALISTS WERE IN UNANIMOUS AGREEMENT OF IT BEING "THE BEST".

I do not. I like FFVI but it needs a remake more than VII.

Ao no Kiseki is the best old school RPG.

I just played through it twice plus some postgame content over the past couple of weeks. The dungeon design is seriously lackluster and the balance sucks hardcore.

>5 options

There's 31 espers that all impact what moves your characters can learn as well as provide a unique spell and additional stat growth

Attached: 1558323402176.png (720x692, 343K)

Don't get your hopes up, they recently had an article about how "toxic" the Mordhau community is.

For years, whenever someone would say Cloud is brooding or emo, people would bring up "let's mosey" and say it shows he can be witty or sarcastic. As well as a few other examples across the game. I don't think Cloud is emo, but I also don't know how to think of Cloud, because the translation is all over the place.

The remake will probably clear all this up, since it will have a new translation, clear body language and vioce actors who set the tone. But because of this, it will also change a lot of perceptions people have built up in the PS1 game. And "let's mosey" will undoubtedly not show up, throwing millions of FFVII fans into a tizzy.

Feels good to be a FFchad.

oh user

you think i CARE about IGN making one fucking right choice? i know they are shit, they have been since about 2005.

fucking 3.0 for godhand?
fuck you IGN!

>6fags so desperate they're felating IGN's clickbait

Attached: 1558231874685.png (887x1097, 860K)

Only niche JRPGs are King's Field, Shadow Tower, and mediocre JRPGs most people didn't play (like Koudelka).

Koudelka is interesting though, if someone wants to play a very western JRPG when it comes to the setting (much like Parasite Eve), I recommend it. Be prepared to deal with the insufferable gameplay though.

That's not Star Ocean: The Second Story PSX Chrono Trigger
PRETTY BASED HERE

They give you spells, stat boosts, and access to a summon each. Every single stat boost that is not magic power does nothing. Half of the spells in the game are useless.

you're retarded

You probably cheesed your run with some basic boring ass team composition

How was Pokemon so popular outside of Japan anyway? Wasn't the cartoon still very new?

Sounds like you're talking about game breaking exploits you learned on GameFAQs and not actual game mechanics

If you play the game correctly the combat is engaging and varied.

If you just grind your way to ultima and abuse that end game spell - yeah it's going to obviously be boring and repetitive. But you played yourself.

>IGN
>Having any valid opinion

JRPGs as a whole are niche, aside from the five or so well known series. Suikoden is moderately known. And Suikoden II is on many lists for best JRPG, despite its low sales. It's one of the most known games among JRPG fans. Even if the general audience only knows about Final Fantasy, Pokemom and Souls.

Sounds like you're too stupid to actually comprehend game mechanics simple enough for a 5 year old to grasp.

FF and Pokémon stopped being good in like '98. Bravely Default was a totally new thing and people loved it.

>Japanese game
>Best RPG

Japanese "rpg's" don't even qualify as such. Best RPG of all time is BG2, or Torment if you decide gameplay doesn't mean fuck.

>Bravely Default was a totally new thing
it's just final fantasy rebranded

Your criticism is pretty much on the dot but it was an interesting story with decent characters and mostly well written.

Just that blows 99% of shit out of the water.

>DS Chrono Trigger higher than SNES CT
wut

Since when they started to pander to weebs? I'm shocked it isn't Mass Effect

The platform it was on was the biggest in the world. It came out right when the anime boom in America started. Europe and Central/South America already loved anime and jumped all over the Pokemon anime. Had the biggest marketing budget in video game history not even counting the anime. Nintendo pushed it with manga and magazines before it even came out in Japan. It came out 2 years late in every other region, so a lot of people heard about it through word of mouth before it even started getting advertised. After seeing it turn into a phenomenon in Japan, Nintendo gave it their largest marketing budget in the west as well. JRPGs had been growing in popularity in the west. Pokemon came out right after the massive success of Final Fantasy VII.

Basically, Pokemon was the perfect storm. To his credit, Iwata saw it coming. But most of the rest of Nintendo execs and shareholders didn't think it would be successful. Ever since, they've been more open to trying new things. But nothing has come close to Pokemon.

*clears throat*

>Bravely Default was a totally new thing and people loved it.
Using what barometer? It sold well for a new IP, but didn't overtake Pokemon or Final Fantasy. And a large reason for its success was going back to the roots of Final Fantasy with a job system and turn based combat. Which is the opposite of what they're doing with the main FF games.

And while people appreciated the return to classic FF and the style/music of the game, the story and flow of the game turned people off so much, most people never finished it. It's sequel also killed the IP.

A better example would be Dragon Quest. Which not only has games which sold more than Bravely Default, but did most of the things fans want Final Fantasy to go back to. Classic gameplay, jobs and skill trees, adventuring, etc. Many people, meaning the half million or so who actually played it, say Dragon Quest XI is what Final Fantasy XV should have been.

Attached: 1532927958822.png (611x800, 546K)

ABSOLUTELY, COMPLETELY, ETERNALLY, BASED

>FFVI
>aged better than Chrono Trigger
In graphics, gameplay, design and pretty much everything else, Chrono Trigger clearly aged better. Chrono Trigger is still enjoyed by new people today. People who don't even like 2D games. Final Fantasy VI had behind the times graphics even when it came out, half the cast is pointless and the story does not hold up.

more like
chrono nigger

JRPGs are boring. They're like ultra dumbed down strategy games with a shounen story attached

Attached: 1536843579552.jpg (800x600, 38K)

FF is basically the epitome of everything that's wrong about JRPG combat. Braindead easy, nearly every encounter is solved by mashing attack and occasionally healing, constant waiting in ATB games, tons of useless skills, strategies that deviate from just hitting them like status ailments are worthless because of how shittily balanced they are, etc. There are some rare exceptions to some of these but overall I would never call any of them the greatest ever.

I actually don't mind FF Tactics or Fire Emblem style game desu

IGN loves Japanese games, their website originally started out as a Nintendo exclusive publication

What is this, the best RPG ever made for ants?

A lot of people like shounen anime and a JRPG is literally just playing a shounen anime. And even then, not all of them are the same. Suikoden takes common tropes in anime then puts a spin on them. It has been characters and story than 99% of anime series. Some Dragon Quest games do the same. Xeno games try to be Sienen, but fail laughably at it.

I don't think you remember the period of time where haven't stop sucking Mass Effect's cock

Sauce?

Play RTS.

Some FF games don't do this. However, FF just goes to the opposite extreme. Enemies/bosses will only be weak to one thing and if you hit them with anything else, they OHKO your entire party. Because "difficulty" means restarting the game from a save point until you do exactly what the developers intended. But they're not going to tell you what it is. You just have to keep trying random skills until you figure it out (trial and error shit). How are you suppose to know that Rubacante will close his cloak when you use steal on him? Ha! You aren't. Isn't that fun?

>Do you agree with them Yea Forums?

they gave it negative reviews because they copy pasted the game and didn't add anything we've already seen

Aerith's death is probably the 2nd most spoiled plot point in vidya history.

Nah, it wasn't even a return to form. You need more than 6 party team and runes to be a Suikoden game. The story and characters sucked. And them making prequels made everything pointless. Suikoden IV and V are very equivalent to Star Wars Episodes I and II.

2's the same as the original but with a little more actual breaks in the game to do mid game narrative stuff.
It's very nes and it's very minor. 6 is completely different relative to 4, much less 5.

I know its probably a small game but i have always thought front mission 4 was an amazing rpg that slipped through people's notice. I'd put it up in the top three of my all time greats for what its worth

The safest choice they could have made
