my main gripe with 7 was the theming, I was expecting cool desperado convict sent-to-die pilot adventures, but it was only like 5 out of the 20 or so missions. The actual gameplay was solid, though

They fixed the targeting issues from release.
Still not as good as earlier games, but its actually usable now, instead of switching to an enemy to the rear of you and halfway across the map, it'll choose whatever is closest to your reticle.

The only issue I have with 7 is that the controls aren't as well optimized for PC as they could be. Elite Dangerous has just a couple of ways to tweak the way the mouse works that made it very comfortable to fly, whereas in AC7 I have to keep my hand still and only move the mouse vertically otherwise I'll roll when I don't want to which can get a bit nerve wracking when a lot of maneuvering is needed.

Yep, and they've buffed TLS too so it isn't a glorified flashlight like when the game released.

Xs 1 squadron fight was a joke, alect didn't even have an emblem until infinity. with no upgraded planes sol squadron is fairly difficult, that spin maneuver is tough. And truth be told it's not about the difficulty of the fight, it's more about the buildup, music, and setting. Yellow squadron isn't very hard at all but it's still a fantastic fight.

I don't know how people enjoy the gameplay of Ace Combat

It's extremely brainless, you just fire auto-aim missiles over and over until the enemy AI decides to go in a straight line and let the missile hit (they are hardcoded to usually do it every third missile.)

The only good part of Ace Combat was its story and characters and its "cool factor".
In 4, 5 & 0 these were all very high. The story made you really want to defeat the enemy and you really wanted to protect your squadmates.
In Ace Combat 7 the story is retarded and disjointed (DURRR HARLON'S MIRROR), your squad changes every few missions, the allied characters that appear in cutscenes are not in your squad and do not appear in the gameplay whatsoever - so who are you supposed to care about in this game?

I seem to recall that this is how things were in 4 as well with Yellow 13 in the Oil Rigs mission. You can beat them but they just keep flying unmarked.

And that's not all. In Ace Combat 3, there definitely were fights with characters who just leave because of plot.

The music was great, fantastic setting and lighting, and they choose the best plane for the fight. and yes I agree that strider didn't have any real comradeship (besides count) they should have stuck with spare squadron

check out They definitely had to scrap branching campaigns probably moreso since development probably rebooted in the middle of it, I'd bet any money the different squadrons you play as in the current game were the different story paths you took in the original concept.

No doubt they had issues because PA is a small studio (like 20 people tops), they were learning a new engine and tech like trueSKY and the VR portion was a bitch to make work.
Hopefully AC8 will include one, now that they've got a proper handle on the technical stuff.

It's not inherently a criticism of drones and AI, it's about the naivety of leaders thinking they could make a war "clean" by using machines to stand in for human beings. The reality is that war is always a mess for everybody involved and can have unforseen consequences and outcomes that naive leaders will be less likely to think about or plan for because they live under a delusion that they've invented a way to sanitize warfare.

The lesson was that the best thing about war is that it ends.
When you make it easier and "cleaner," it gets a lot harder to actually get to that point. That guy who dropped a ton of info on you and then exploded explained this.

The lesson of AC7 is that war is fucking awesome so long as it's done with man-planned fighter planes
