The grossout humor started with Wario Land 4.

Because the best ending isn't the canon ending, user. Look at the original Wario Land. The best ending had Wario getting the moon and his face being drawn on it, while the second-best ending had him getting a castle. In Wario Land II, the castle ending was the one that was the canon ending despite not being the best one.

at least then, it was balanced by his batshit personality and the grossout stuff wasn't his only trait.

Have you played Wario Ware Gold? I thought they did a great job balancing his personality traits there, with his greed and even original antagonistic ways shining through pretty good in that game.

I also don't think Wario in Smash, specifically Smash Ultimate, is as bad as you're saying. In Ultimate his moveset is a combination of things from Wario Land, Wario World, Wario Ware, some "reverse Mario" stuff and relatively minimal grossout stuff. It's really just his down B, Final Smash and one of his three win poses that have him farting, which is fairly minuscule when you consider the rest of his moveset.

for smash i'm talking about his debut in Brawl, where i'm pretty sure he did a fart nuke in his reveal.
i've heard good things about Warioware Gold, so i guess it's not out of the picture for them to finally fix his personality this time.

Oh, I don't disagree with you on Brawl. It was worse in Smash 4 where Sakurai thought it'd be a great idea to completely remove Wario's most iconic move, the shoulder bash, in a motion that demonstrated just how little he understood him as a character.

I was just pointing out that right now, Wario's in a pretty good place again. He's the best he's ever been in Smash Ultimate and his moveset overall is a much better representation of him as a whole now, and his recent showing in WarioWare Gold was pretty fun. It was the first time in quite awhile where they let Wario go full villain again.

Sakurai's reasoning was that the shoulder bash as it was in Brawl, where it was Wario's forward smash attack, didn't have enough range and thus wasn't any good. His solution was to replace it with a punch attack instead. The punch does have more range, but it's a lot slower and harder to actually hit with in a lot of situations. More importantly, Sakurai didn't bother putting the shoulder bash anywhere else, being completely clueless about why that was a big deal when that was like if he had decided that Link shouldn't have the spin attack anymore and replaced his Up B with something like Marth's generic upward sword swipe attack Up B.

Sakurai must have gotten a lot of complaints because Wario in Ultimate feels like an apology.

Yeah. They also did some appreciated adjustments to his moveset overall. He had jittery, janky looking movement and a lot of his attacks looked goofy for the sake of looking goofy. His Up B, for example, used to have him with his hands raised directly above his head as he did a ballerina twirl. In Ultimate, he now does a spinning lariat that propels him upward finished off by a flashy pose instead.

It was a weird time for Wario. Fortunately, that's all in the past.

I mained him in both games, honestly didn't notice they changed the B UP animation

They changed a couple of his moves like that, and he animates a lot smoother overall now.

Actually, yeah. I like how much presence cursed Shokora has in the game, even if you don't know it. I always thought the cat ran into the item shop to encourage you to make things easier on yourself (I never needed to) and it blew my mind when I saw a video of somebody actually using an item on the final boss
