the silent hill series(1-4) was good because it had good atmosphere and good monster design, accompanied by a good sound design
everything after 1 was a crapshoot where they were just seeing what stuck to the wall because konami did what konami is wont to do and started to bleed it dry with sequels that weren't needed

the story wasn't really particularly well written outside of 1, it just heavily relied on implications, metaphors, and allegories which made it seem real deep when it really wasn't that deep, and 1 wasn't too well written either but it was pretty good for the time
