"Home" is my favorite, but ASGORE is certainly the best one, just the most impressively structured one of the bunch. The song hits all the right emotional beats, compliments the story perfectly.

It is if you stop at the end of Act 4. Act 5 is when it got seriously popular and it isn't a coincidence that it sucks and goes on way too long. And everything after that is even worse, all the way to the godawful ending. If you think you'd be satisfied stopping halfway through then go for it, if not then avoid it like the plague.

If you stop reading directly after End of Act 5. It's a flash called Cascade. Anything after that is irredeemable other than Caliborn.

My favorite examples of motifs are in the Ace Combat series. 4 has the Mobius motif heard in a good half of the soundtrack(my personal favorite), 5 uses Into the Dusk/Unsung War's melody a lot. 0 has that wailing soprano vocal line in a few of its tunes. 7 has a pretty nice one, too. Probably the clearest example.

Man, when Pollyanna gets referenced in the Home theme and just a LITTLE in the Twoson theme in EarthBound, it's the fucking best, that's such a good musical moment and I definitely get shades of that with the Undertale soundtrack.

You don't wanna touch the PS1 games until you're familiar. This picture is a bit old, but it's a good guide.
The PS2 games now emulate pretty well, with AC04 being a bit wonky but doable.
AC7 is also a great starting point for newcomers. Its story is self-contained so you don't need to know the rest of the games to play it, but it DOES have a ton of little nods and easter eggs for the vets.
