I mean, isn't the franchise a flop? Maybe some ideas were a couple years ahead of the time, but that's about it.

The idea of a crowdfunded project selling its backers to a platform like they're a product fills me with intense disgust. Most of the Epic exclusive shit I don't hold against the devs of those games because sometimes the safe bet of guaranteed money is the wisest choice, but a crowdfunded project should feel obligated to please its backers first and foremost. Casually throwing them aside really fills me with contempt for the developers.

I think in this case they desperately needed funding more than anything. Keep in mind they had tens of millions when making 1 and 2 and here they no doubt under budgeted and are scrambling. I'm not making an excuse, what they did was scummy, but it seems like a vast majority of these groups under budget and then hit that realization that this is going to be a multi-year project you need a decent team on working for several years on top of all the stuff you promised to fulfill.

Nah. Epic will simply claim their guaranteed purchases as actual sales.

You can either make a shit game with only backer donations.
Or you can make a shit game that has more shit in it by selling out.
I'm glad they've taken all the money they can get, because I'm sure that a backer only version of Shenmue 3 would be fucking awful. At least now I can drive a forklift again.

I know the Epic thing is more the publisher's fault, but when a KS game needs to fall back on a publisher after getting 6 MILLION dollars, maybe we shouldn't get our hopes up

Considering that supposedly Epic was helping with Shenmue since the beginning, it's a miracle that they didn't pull the same shit with Bloodstained. That's on Unreal too, and the publisher also has an Epic exclusive coming up.
