My kid downloaded a WiiU rom and I got an email from my isp about it

My kid downloaded a WiiU rom and I got an email from my isp about it.

I never experienced this before. Should I reasonably expect any repercussions once I have deleted the torrent from the machine and set up a VPN?

Do ISPs generally report to the claimant your indentity on the first offense?

It's all over, bro. I'm so sorry.

Your kid's going to juvie!

Your ISP can't even tell whether or not you deleted it after they told you to. They're not required to do fuckall other than the mandatory minimum, which is the equivalent of a sternly worded letter, and so they only do the mandatory minimum because otherwise they risk losing a customer. Your ISP has every interest in keeping you out of jail and on their monthly bill list.

Don't worry I'll be gentle with him ;)

Who torrents roms?

I guess I'm only worried because it's Nintendo. It was a P2P torrent according to the email but it seems there wasn't any seeding just the initial download.

Teach him not to seed.

Depends entirely on the country. In most countries nothing would come out of it.

This. I've torrented loads of anime and I've yet to receive any letters from my ISP.

He showed it to me and it said paused on the completed file so I assume he wasn't seeding

>my kid
boy or girl?

USA

I know spectrum will send you emails but they're too jew-y to do anything about it

Anime's easy because the rights holders are an ocean away and can't really exert any pressure on your local provider. Pirate something nearer to home, like a certain HBO program, without a VPN and you'll occasionally get a warning pop up that says "Delete this file and then click this button to confirm you deleted it. You won't be able to access the internet until you do." and that's the extent of the punishment. Repeat offenses can lead to you having to call your ISP on the phone instead of just clicking a button, and then even further repeat offenses can lead to them temporarily suspending your service for some number of weeks.

And that's pretty much all they'll bother to do, because that's all that's required of them. They've got to try to guilt trip you, and then slap you on the wrist if it doesn't seem to be working.

>My kid
Shiggy
Also just delete the email and literally never think about it again

Usa are big

Thank you for the answers, my friends.
While what's done is done, I can at least be sure to prevent it from happening again, and so long as Nintendo doesn't come knocking at my door, which wouldn't happen unless the subpoena my ISP to give up my personal info, it won't be a problem.

We already owned the game but apparently the little fucker wanted to mod it and wasn't able to on the Switch.

Hey dad mom asked if Uncle Tyrone was free this weekend, she said you should take me to the game store and buy me a fun game for both of us next time he visits

>"my kid"

sure op. Don't worry about it either way, those letters don't mean anything

>torrent something with a vpn
>get the notice anyway because it just gets sent to the vpn and they forward it to you

How retarded are you fuckers? A VPN doesn't do shit with torrenting. Get a private tracker by any means necessary.

How old is your wife's son?

teach the kid to seed and use private trackers

your kid sounds based, don't beat him too hard

>private tracker meme
cec

Just ignore every allegation, if anyone says anything to you just go "huh?" and play dumb like a boomer. They're hoping you admit guilt because it's the only way they can legally go forward with anything.

i've only got letters for downloading new normalfag romcoms, never games or music, what game did he download? based on mods i'm guessing breath of the wild

doubt.png
data is data and ISPs don't know what the fuck are your 0s and 1s

Good kid. He'll learn all sorts of technical skills while modding.

Stop misusing that image you faggot. You're a retard.

Braindead retard, how about you get a proper VPN instead of some trash like TunnelBear or NordVPN? Then again you won't see ads for those on r/all so you'll never know about them.

Protip: my VPN doesn't have enough data to know who I am, and my ISP does not either. Only way to get to me would be to send a court order to both VPN and ISP, but the VPN deletes the data faster than any court will work so it's impossible.

Translation:

I downloaded a WiiU ROM at the start of my summer break and my parents got a letter about it, now I'm grounded :( wat do

>but the VPN deletes the data faster than any court will work so it's impossible.

How do you know that for sure?

where else would you get roms you fucking retard?

Jesus thats so fucking retarded
Come to Chile noboby give a fuck what yo do on internet
Plus we have eclipses n shiet

The only way to know for sure is to post childporn and wait and see if a partyvan pulls up your driveway. Needless to say I'm not doing that.

don't most Vpn say that they don't save any data from their users? Only the free ones have data on you like the one that comes free with Opera. I mean, isn't the point of Vpn's to protect the identity of the user? I have never used one tho, since I live in a 3rd world "island" I can pirate whatever and no one gives a shit.

Time to teach your kid about honeypots.

They grow up so fast!

Use a block list for your torrent clients and you'll likely never see another email again.

>"Delete this file and click the button to confirm you did"
>put the files on my external
>unplug my external
>click the button
wew so hard my dude.

If you are a real man, just load your gun and defend your child and your freedom from your isp

our isp was ready to dump us and release everything after my brother torrented a release within the week it came out.

One of the rare times I'm happy i was born in the great shithole of Russia. It'll be another 20 years before something like this could happen here.

i never thought about the eclipses, good advice

>land of the free
>bro delete that file or you're going to the McSlammerâ„¢

oh my goodness americans are absolute cucks, i've never experience anything like this in australia

>i've never experience anything like this in australia

That's because by the time you download ROM the company that made the game went bankrupt

Why is it only games ISPs seem to give a shit about? Most people pirate music and movies all day long nothing ever happens, the second you start pirating games they start sending letters out. It must just be for AAA games though right? I don't see your ISP giving a fuck about you pirating some random indie shit.

god bless america

Used to work for a big ISP. We used to get those letters come through by the hundreds daily. We werent required to action them and only told the companies we did. Its upto the company complaining to chase you, not us. The only times we ever followed them up with our customers is if thet were shit payers or serial complainers

Linkle BotW, isn't it?

Torrent clients show all connected IPs. Some companies monitor public torrents of their products and send out warnings to the ISPs of those IPs. I know Bandai Namco does it for sure. I don't think they have any way to track direct downloads though, your ISP can tell which websites you connect to but not what files you get from them. I got one warning from Bamco, so I just started using direct download links and never saw another email. Most games have google drive links lately, which are generally faster for me than torrents.

literally never happened to me, and I've pirated a shitload stuff
so yeah, I still doubt you

lmao i used to get those letters all of the time, they wont sue you over video games.

>am*rica
Fucking hahaha
Nice freedom you corporate slaves

music, movies and TV are much more common to get letters for in burgerland than video games.
