As someone who's frequently done that, it's not fair in the slightest that 1st place is 100% immune to items. I can get clocked 7 times and I wouldn't worry. Every race is determined by who makes it out of the crowd at the start. Everyone might as well quit as soon as you and I boost ahead.

Once you’ve got SF or USF built up they can keep up with everyone else in addition to the added bonus of maxed out handling, uturns and air braking and shit aren’t required.

You can get the kart if you're 5% from either of them.

You just do regular offline modes / online for the challenges. There's no actual special mode for Grand Prix.

I started playing like two or three hours ago (i.e. almost everyone had a huge head start on me) and I'm now number 1497 on PS4 championship leaderboard which is in fact top 5% (anything above 2269 is). I'm just going to keep climbing for the rest of the day and get even higher. You don't need to be even in the top 2000 by the end of the month since a lot of casual players are going to start playing and give up.
