Dragon Quest has good writing, but it's not a story-driven game. It focuses on being a game and an adventure first. You're plopped down in a pretty basic plot that rarely, if ever, takes turns in its path, and you're expected to forge your own story. The game IS the story. You traveling around, talking to people, getting into battles, is the story of Dragon Quest.

People who play game for a narrative experience tend not to like that. If you're the type of person who drops a game 10 hours in because the stories happening to the characters that you're leisurely driving around the overworld haven't really progressed and grown, shown character flaws, and revealed some dark secret about the journey they're on, then you won't like Dragon Quest.

One thing you might notice about DQ11 is how it pays attention to so many small visual details. The way almost nothing clips with other objects, the high res textures on characters and anything that would actually need such detail, etc. The art really proves they aren't some amateur hour shit like Bethesda RPGs

Even when the party is sat around the fire, clothing doesn't just clip through the ground, it has physics. Hair doesn't just pass through itself or the character. Things animate properly without distorting their models like rubber toys. It really is a pleasure to look at no matter where you are or what you're doing in game.

Old time PC users tend to associate MIDI with General MIDI because that specific subset was what selecting "MIDI" for music in your 90s DOS games did. And maybe I'm speaking out of turn, but General MIDI's instruments were pretty fucking awful across the board. Made for some very naff game soundtracks with only a few standout exceptions.
Meanwhile on the SNES, every game had it's own unique samples designed for the music and despite the laughably low quality samplerate possible, they sounded amazing and still sound decent to this day. Meanwhile all General MIDI is remembered for is harsh brass, slap bass and excessive reverb from Creative Labs AWE cards.

There are mods that can fix that.
Same goes for the boring purple clothes of the Hero.

I've been playing through DQ XI for the past couple days and that is not true.
You've got Zoom if you want to get somewhere fast.
There is sprint and horses.

However, from my experience, the game is so stunningly gorgeous I have used horse maybe twice or three times in my 70 hours playthrough so far (only have just finished Act 1 at some 60hours) because I just LOVE looking at the game and observe the scenery.
It's so fucking pretty I really can't force myself to just rush through it.

Anyway, there has not been a single time in which I would have to run somewhere thinking "omg making me run somewhere again ugh" becasue the game does not do that.

Don't really have a stomach for barebone jrpgs and bottom of the barrel fantasy stories about fighting evil
