A few of the NIS games were actually a bit of a pain in the ass about that. If you were playing New Game+, it could get pretty tough to lose on purpose to an enemy several thousand levels below you, because winning would just give you a bad ending.

I remember Soul Nomad in particular being a huge pain in the ass, because it was really hard to have your squad with Revya and eight Gideons at level 9,999 take a dive. You had to swap to the room that drained your stamina and killed you if it was empty, and then actively flee from Feinne to avoid killing her. And after THAT, you had to sit there re-rolling your room for an hour to get a decent one again if you haven't gone through the process of maxing out a decent Home yet.

For all the shit Oblivion got, that was one thing It did pretty well. Through the entirety of the main quest you're just some faggot that does the laundry list for the actual guy while he just hunkers down and hangs out until commit sudoku.
Then, for most people, the Shivering Isles happens (the DLC integration was half-assed, but just given the fact that it came out after TES 4, and after most people already beat it, typically, a person plays it after beating the main quest)
