Hearts of Iron IV

Just picked this up and it looks pretty fun. Only other paradox game I’ve really played a lot of is ck2 with 159 hours and getting better every game, though I’m trying to get into Victoria 2 even though that one fucking throws me. Hoi4 looks really really good to me plus I love WWII. What does Yea Forums think of this thing and what am I in for?

Hoi4 is broken and only fun with mp salt

Be prepared to dump hundreds of hours into it and still not understand how to play the game

I've gotten at least 150 in and still haven't played a round to completion

I bought it like a year ago and I played like an hour of it but it was so confusing and it had so many mechanics that needed hours of learning and tutorials that I stopped playing and I haven't played since. The only other Paradox game I've played was EU4 and I put like 100 hours into that.

I got it myself and I'm only just getting used to it. Disappointed with Paradox with how lazy they're getting though. I've been experimenting with different campaigns and ideologies and there's just so many countries that have been left barebones. I went to do a non-aligned run of Australia and the game changes the country to 'the Emu Empire', like what the fuck? Did they think that was funny?

You sound like the kind of retard ruining what's left of paradox's games. Tell you what retard, don't bother with HOI IV, play modded III or modded DH if you want to scratch a WW2 itch.

It's alright, I've had some fun with it.
Modding community is pretty expansive, but most of it is trash, only a few big ones worth downloading.
USSR and Italy need new focus trees

Fuck off back /gsg/ you crumb

You literally cant prove me wrong, IV is for people too stupid and lazy for III.

Overall have you had fun though? I’ve heard good things and everyone seems to be able to pump thousands of hours into it like other paradox games but I’ve also heard it’s not as complex or replayable as Vicky 2 or CK2.

AND IT'S NAME
GEE ESS GEE

>Overall have you had fun though

I'll tell you after I reach the 100+ hour mark

Boring and dumbed down with shit AI compared to HoI III. You have more freedom to break history, but that’s basically what civilization is for. Also can’t help but feel some politics snuck in considering how much the axis underperforms like Germany stalling out and getting fucked in Belgium, the republic winning the Spanish civil war in a landslide, and Italy getting invaded by Ethiopia. Maybe I’ve spent too much time on pol and the AI is just that bad, but I swear it didn’t happen until a year ago.

Pick up HOI3 instead you filthy casual. It's only enjoyable with mods (HPP) but what Paracocks game isn't?

3 is fine without mods if your new to the series, but boy it’s a crap shoot to run on some machines

You can toggle historical AI scenarios (dunno if that was there at launch I've only recently played it) so the war tries to stay as accurate as possible.

I disagree, vanilla HOI3 has so little content and a non-existent diplo that deviating anything from the IRL timeline completely breaks the game. For example in vanilla if you manage to protect Denmark in 1940 by quickly disembarking a corps on their islands, Denmark never surrenders, stumping the German AI and basically making them sit there like impotent idiots, never dowing the Benelux and occasionally parachuting on Corsica.

I like this game but my brain isn't big enough to play it

I’m well aware just feels like paradox either made the AI shit the bed, fucked the balance, or nerfed le evil fascist to prove orange man bad or some dumb shit.
Had a friend play germany with me to prove I wasn’t crazy and with a combination of the Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica failed to acquire even 50% air superiority over southern Ethiopia

I’m having some trouble learning the ropes of Vicky 2 and even then it looks like when I get a hang of it it’ll be a ton of fun, but HOI3 from most of the people I’ve talked to is just more archaic and not as fun. Idk personally though since I’ve never touched it.

Like I said if your new to the series it’s fine, if you know what’s up yeah you need mods. Most new players usually pick Germany, England, Soviets, US, or japan and do basically what those countries did in reality perhaps more or less efficient.

as someone who has 1k hours on it, I just cheat and make my own scenarios

tfw a million hours on vic2 and ck2 but cant enjoy any of these other new games because they're even more watered down.

Bought this game for 1 mod and 1 mod alone. That one.

Ck2 is honestly pretty shallow if you don’t mod or gib for dlc. The flavor text and possibly for fuckery as the ruler is top tier.

Ck2 is by far my favorite grand strategy game, Victoria 2 is still my second even though I’ve got no idea what the fuck is going on and have 2 hours on it. Hoi4 attracted me because the time period seems cool and is one of my favorites. Still hoping I’ll have as much fun with it as I have with ck2, honestly I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of that one.

HOI IV is heavily dumbed down compared to HOI III and any other paradox grand strat. I would suggest playing HoI like a more detailed civ game and not as a detailed wwII grand strat have fun doing shit like knocking the hell out of the Soviets and invading Germany as japan, creating a communist South American empire, and spending 20 fucking years getting New Zealand to produce a single gun.

Who wouldn't? It gets better with each update, while vanilla gets worse

What mod are we talking about? I’ve only been playing Vanilla in all these games.

Kaiserreich, an alternate history mod set in a world where Germany won the First World War. It has much, much more content than the base game. Most of the countries have unique focus trees, event chains, decisions, etc.

>Commiereich

First people claimed it was kaiserwank, now they claim it's syndiewank. You can't please everyone

Some day it will finally be National Populistwank

You need to go deeper, play Gary Grigsby's War in the East/West.
