I have tons of hours in both. The race variety really gives a lot of different experiences. At least in the early game.
Can you give me a quick rundown on the Warhammer lore and races? I’m new to the whole series.
The lore basically just goes down to humans(the empire and bretonnia), elves and dwarfs trying to fight back against demons who want to corrupt and destroy the world(they do). And there’s a bunch of other races like the greenskins and skaven and undead who are just there to pad out the lore. None of them matter except daemons because they literally always win.

Each race on the surface level is just a collection of tropes and rip off of other fantasy works. But beneath the surface they each actually have really interesting lore thanks to the many novels and stories. Skaven in particular are a fun race to read about.
The man story is Order vs Chaos, but there have been plenty of wars between each race. So if you want to role-play your campaign a certain way, there are a ton of "Canon" options.

Empire: Regular ol' humans. Vaguely based off of the Holy Roman Empire. Steel, Faith, and Gunpowder. That fun stuff.
Bretonnia: Medieval France combined with Arthurian legends. They love their heavy cavalry.
High Elves: They are exactly what you picture when you see the word High Elf.
Wood Elves: Same thing
Dark Elves: Sadomasochistic elves. All of them are witches, pirates, slavers, and assassins.
Dwarves: Tolkien dwarves, but they hold grudges forever until the grudges are repaid.
Greenskins: Orcs and goblins that spread like a fungus and just won't die.
Lizardmen: Giant lizard aztecs that rigidly follow the plans of the Old Ones. They are the closest thing Warhammer has to a neutral faction.
Vampire Counts: Literally just Vampires.
Tomb Kings: Undead Egyptians
Skaven: Giant humanoid rats that tunnel underneath everything in the world, breed like crazy, invade whole towns and murder everyone, etc.
Beastmen: Humans twisted and mutated by chaos to resemble beasts like minotaurs and stuff. They rape and eat people.
Norscans: Chaos vikings
Warriors of Chaos: Evil, mutated, hulking warriors in armor that worship the chaos gods and follow Archaon to help him bring about an end to the world.
Lore: In the beginning there were the Old Ones. They created most of the races and had a plan for the world. Then Chaos happened, they died, and everyone has been fighting each other ever since.
Thousand times better than Three Chinkdoms, turn timers excluded.
Empire: good guys but are stupid as fuck
Bretonnia: the other human faction, class divisions between nobles and peasants, horses. That’s pretty much it
High Elves: special snowflakes who use magic and stuff, just watch lotr
Dwarfs: angry bitter shitty manlets
Vampire counts: zombies and vampires, because a generic fantasy setting wouldn’t be complete without them
Greenskins: le crazy epic funny orcs. oh and they grow out of fungus because lol so randumb xD
Skaven: giant rats who want to kill everything or something idk
Lizardmen: another generic fantasy trope race, they were the first race created so at least that’s something, they’re good guys
Warriors of Chaos: humans who have been corrupted by chaos
Dark Elves: elves but edgy that’s pretty much it
Wood elves: elves who live in woods
Beastmen: furry animal crossbred humans who want to kill and rape everything
Chaos dwarves: evil dwarfs
Tomb kings: more undead, live in pyramids
Norsca: more warriors of chaos but live in the frozen tundra, Viking ripoffs and in general an asspull race that was sold as dlc
Vampire coast: zombie pirates, another asspull dlc race
Ogre kingdoms: another generic forced evil race. Literally just dumbfuck ogres
Chaos Daemons: generic demons who want to destroy the world, they do and this kills the franchise, literally, LMAO

They love fighting so much and it's such an integral part of their existence that if they dont find something else to fight, they will fight each other sometimes driving their tribes out of existence, they are the true nuetral since they sometimes fight the "good" forces, and sometimes fight the evil forces and sometimes team up/help with either as long as they can fight or it will help their goal with fighting

Probably one of the most complete fantasy strategy games to date. Sadly you need to buy the first and second games and all the DLC to get the full experience and access to mortal empires which is the game map with all the factions on it. Also the loading times on AI turns is absolutely disgusting on mortal empires, even on an ssd it takes years to process a turn in the late game. Other than that it's pretty fun, PvP is great if you're into that and there's a lot of variety. AI leaves something to be desired and increases in difficulty buff their morale instead of giving them new tricks but I still consider it to generally be fun.

The most boring campaign gameplay in the series
Warhammer is the pinnacle of exaggerated fantasy (I mean that in a good way) and because of that you get the most sterotyped version of Fantasy races. In the case of Elves you get beautiful, flamboyant and graceful characters that make them look like Chadeleths.
Don't fight them. Men and dwarfs are oldest friends. Iron is plentiful enough without taking it from them, and they're often the only thing holding back the green tide from rolling through blackfire pass again.

That is dependent on processor speed, not hard drive load times. The benefits of the SSD come in when loading into battles or the campaign map.

Not necessarily. Some of it is pretty standard fair, but some of it isn't. Like only the Elves are standard Tolkeinesque, and even then, they have the whole Athens (HE) vs Sparta (DE) going on. Empire notably averts the issue a lot of fantasy has where the whole world is frozen at a certain tech and societal level. They're in an early renaissance. Tomb Kings are notable for being liches who aren't that evil, just ruthless and uncaring. There's a lot about Warhammer that is very uniquely Warhammer.

Ogres are voracious giants. They are driven by greed and hunger. They were the last created by the Old Ones and are half formed, lacking intelligence but possess terrible strength, stomachs strong enough to dissolve stone, and pride fit to drive them across the world. They are divided and slow to breed but a tremendous force for whoever feeds them most.
>Chaos Dwarfs
Ancient dwarfs launched an expedition to the darklands to settle but then chaos came and wreck everything. They abandoned their Ancestor gods and turned to a minor chaos power for survival and are now horrid slavers but more amazing smiths than their good brothers.
All the rest are factions either more minor or removed from the main events than these so are only worth going over if you find a particular attraction to them.

Actually the same thing really. Difference is you're more sea based and undead instead of chaos.

It costs much more than other games because you'll need all of the DLC and the first game.
It's also well worth it. The game is fun on its own before you get burnt out on the total war formula.
However, the game is STUPID amounts of fun for a really long time if you like Warhammer fantasy and play role playing campaigns in Mortal Empries where you act like your chosen Lord/faction would act regardless of the circumstances, consequences, or inefficiency of army composition. Like, Malekith campaigns are boring. Malekith campaigns where you fucking strike out at Ulthuan in every way, shape and form before you even stabilize Naggaroth are riding fucking lighting amounts of fun.

Nippon is about as likely as Amazons or Pygmys. Araby is basically confirmed already, DoW/TEB cucks eternally on suicide watch.

In lore yeah but in game, post nerf, they're fucking shit at even competing in the Badlands bowl. They refuse the pillars of grugni and confederate barak varr then get their shit pushed in from there because they get fuckall effective armies and no income.
Vampire coast undead are just so much better. Like they don't seem to be as mindless and boring as a regular ass zombie.

Because they aren't regular ass zombies. The vampires of the vampire coast use better magic to make better zombies. That is what you get when you are lead by Luthor fucking Harkon and not Mannfred Von Carstein.
The different flavors of undead want different things.
Tomb kings want to rule their kingdom, kick all the younger races off their lawn, and occasionally fight Nagash
Nagash wants to become the god of death
Vampire counts generally want to eat folk and subjugate the empire
Vampire pirates are just pirates.

Zombie pirate is a simple enough concept but it just works.
Norsca fortifies norsca then goes raiding around the world taking the occasional safe harbor rather than painting the map. Battlewise they get loads of monsters and surprisingly efficient infantry with shortrange, AP missiles.
Vampirates get the most unique set of starts in the game, they also get to raid but instead can found coves to leech off of the settlement and prepare for future raiding. Battlewise they have some good tarpit and a fuckload of guns and alright monsters. Like actual fuckload of guns. Full armies of ranged units and its actually intended.
Oh yeah BB, bring every1, s'all good. We got errythang you want, mmk? Just march out into the desert for about a day or two hun so we can get our freak on in private (・ω
Something is wrong with me, but all I play is dwarves. Forever. Since the first game. Just dwarves.
I really enjoy KILLING the other new races, but only as dwarves. I have 900 hours in the series, only as dwarves and one time (never again) as the empire.
Actually, best strat is to cove everything, especially the capitals. Also, if Harkon try to take Mexico and Galleon's Graveyard after securing the coast because those places will make bank for you. You can seriously fund 3-4 high tier armies off of those regions alone.

In the most recent co op campaign I started after the amethyst update they had actually won quite a few battles. They still didnt own the silver road province but owned the entire barak varr province and had apparently won quite a few battles against all the green armies there. The dawi south of sylvania were still alive and even the bloody spearz only owned gunbad. This is around turn 100, but the point is men should not be fighting dwarfs, there are plenty of other targets for an empire start.
They do need life in the universe in order to exist, but you presume they value existing above everything else, but it's confirmed that they don't. The canon is that they succeed in destroying the universe.

Counts and Nagash are a bunch of cunts, that's why. Their necromantic rituals are meant to remove all sentience and individuality. Coasts and Kings also have a problem with going crazy or losing your sentience, but it's not purposeful.

Good: One of the best cavalry units in the game from top to bottom
Bad: One trick pony, everything else is shit
>Dwarfs
Good: Defensive infantry and artillery focused faction and they're good enough thanks to higher leadership
Bad: No cavalry means they get flanked and kited easily, they struggle against any unit that has the anti-infantry trait (they have nobody with this trait), outside of Slayers they're also slower than the rest, no monsters

Good: WAAAGH
Bad: WAAAGH, goblins
>Vampire Counts
Good: Magic and monster heavy faction, can taint lands in the campaign that will fuck over enemy armies and their infantry, monsters and cavalry are extremely good
Bad: No missile units or artillery

Good: Heavy infantry and monster focused faction, they can also taint lands in the campaign etc
Bad: No missile units, their lone artillery unit doesn't really belong to their faction and they easily get shredded by armor piercing units, the third game will likely fix them and add God-specific daemons

Good: Shit
Bad: Shit

Good: Really good ranged units
Bad: Lords are awful, in the campaign you're fucked whether you pick the elves or the tree-kin, no artillery, most of your units are unarmored and unshielded meaning they will easily get slaughtered in infantry blobs and their cavalry is laughable

Bad: no missile units or artillery, cavalry is dogshit, anti-large units are dogshit

Counts had a ton of new content added. They can even field human units via a special resource, giving them access to guns and cannons in campaign.
If the last time you played was vampire coast update then you probably shouldnt read about the prophet and the warlock update.
The undead are not sided with Chaos and the Undead aren't a single faction either.
To understand the Undead you have to know about Nagash. Nagash was a super powerful evil Necromancer that turned all of Nehekhara (Warhammer's Egypt) into an undead wasteland. He created the Tomb Kings as a result, and they fucking hate him for it. The pharaohs were told they would have perfect golden bodies in the afterlife, but now they are stuck with rotted skeletal corpses in an endless desert.
Neferata, an ancient Nehekharan, studied Nagash's work and tried to recreate his elixir of life to give her eternal youth. She fucked it up and became the first vampire instead. Then she created more vampires. The Tomb Kings hate the Vampire as a result.
The Vampire Counts are their own faction. They are a collection of Vampires, the two most famous being Vlad and Mannfred Von Carstein. They want to rule the Empire. No one likes them.
The Vampire Coast are, again, their own faction. Though even they aren't a true faction since each major player is out for themselves. The most famous is Luthor Harkon, the pirate king. He just wants power. He doesn't follow the Vampire Counts.
Nagash himself is another faction. He has his loyal followers, which include Neferata and Arkhan the Black. In the End Times he brings all the Undead together to fight against Chaos, but not before getting rid of the leader of the Tomb Kings (Settra) and kicking Mannfred out for being a spineless douchebag.
Nagash hates chaos because HE wants to rule the world, and he wants everyone to be undead.

Good: All-rounders except unlike the Empire they're much stronger and have dragons

They weren't removed from AoS because they were never in AoS to begin with, although there are "hints" (read: GW covering their ass and getting your hopes up) of an Egyptian themed faction, but at this point it's Nippon: Tomb King edition in terms of never ever.

Vampire Counts update was a while ago by now. It was their faction update, same as Dwarfs got the forge before that and someday everyone else will. Slowly. Most recent one was Brets, with the lizard/rat lord pack.
Pretty good rundown. However, Tomb Kings are the best bronze age army in any total war game (outside of the Egyptians in Rome 1)
It's fun. Empire and Dwarves are really good in it, since they get unique units if they hold certain regions. Empire in particular gets a new mechanic based upon territorial integrity (the higher it is, the better your relations with other counts and the better your economy/military) and managing the other counts through events. Harder to cheese, and the AI is less schizo. Like you'll actually see huge empires (Clan Rictus actually managed to confederate the other Skaven and take over half the world in one of my campaigns) Newer factions, like Vampirates, have nearly vanilla rosters and mechanics though.

check workshop, there's faction unlockers and shit that allow you to play brets outside of bretonnia, you can always go on crusades using unmodded but you kinda have to deal with local bullshit first and leave an at home team.
Really, the unit cap needs rework in general. It makes no sense that artillery and monsters take up the same slot as over 100 men.
Both tomb Kings and wood elves are hard core neutral in that they are the epitome of "get offa my lawn you kids" races, one for the desert, the other for forests.
Lore wise,tomb Kings are also fascinating as they have cities filled with living people guarded by loyal, honorable, undead skeletons.

You get a slave stack and an artillery/elite stack. Also, don't worry about friendly fire. Slaves are far cheaper than whatever they got, and don't hurt the Leadership of your other units when they rout.

If you really want the crusade feel then you should start as a regular Bretonnia faction and confederate the crusader factions with the revamped Bretonnia tech tree. Then you have the money and population back home in the relatively safe Bretonnia to support actual crusades out of the far off strongholds you just incorporated.

I was talking about the final count by the end of the cycle, in response to the Arabyfag suffering. WH1 ended up with 9 races, one given for free, where WH2 has 6 and already confirmed that no more are coming.
To their credit, WH2 gives every race a well rounded 4 LLs, which is nice, but nowhere near an equivalent in terms of content. The promise of extra lord packs isn't really exciting either, just the possibility of making the Lustria Bowl even more of a nightmare.
How short is the new Doom? I usually play games in short bits and I feel that doesn't mesh well with the classic arcade shooty style. I could get both, but Tomb Kings are my absolute favorite faction in the tabletop and it would feel wrong getting TW:W2 without them. Conversely, getting both would be generally over what I had budgeted. Is it worth it?

Bloodbowl works because of the limitations of turns and movement. Take that away and you will never see an agi team again since bloodbowl has no reservations about literally killing the receiver before the pass has even left the QB.

there basically the go too heavy fire power faction now, between nukes,machine guns, heavy sniper rifles, chemical warfare, and a shit load of warp tech, you can swiss cheese just about anything before it gets within pissing range, the only problem I've had is with cav heavy armies and wide formations. god forbid the crazy fucks at ca give them access to the missing units from clan moulder or verminlords.

All the races are just invented so to have an excuse to make armies different so that games workshop can sell more miniatures. They are all asspulls, but fairly good asspulls which is why Warhammer is successful.

Empire Handgunners absolutely shit on every thing in the game. Sub-humans and disgusting French peasants get absolutely dunked on by superior empire gunpowder. Enemies charging you with a giant Chaos demon? Line up a few of your absolute alpha as fuck handgunners, and watch that faggot magic creature get absolutely deleted in a few volleys.
Also Balthazar Gelt is the best lord and if you disagree you are literally a massive faggot

The only thing that is lacking for WH1 races are different start positions. Other than Von Carsteins there is no reason for other factions to not spawn elsewhere where they are needed.

Kislev lore is pretty fun, it's a reverse of what happened to Russia IRL. In WH world those lands were originally populated by Ungols (you can guess who they're supposed to represent) and then got conquered by Gospodars (not-russians) a Kurgan tribe that migrated from the east when most of Kurgans converted to Chaos.

So who here likes talking about army idenity and how it works. I think it is a fun exercise that helps you understand how all races work and why some units are good and some units are bad.
