A lot of this could be changed in the remake because Aerith was written into the story beforehand as the only love interest and so they had a better idea of how they would play off.

But from a character pov, Cloud is initially nicer to Tifa in the bar but still a little indifferent. To the point she has to remind him of their promise.

And in Mideel they use memories of the two of them as a shorthand for his resurfacing personality.

I just remember the exploits to increase Tifa's and Yuffie's without limit and that taking Aerith along with the party when you go look for Dyne with Barret gives Aerith +10 for some ungodly reason. My understanding was something along the lines with Aerith starting with 30, Tifa with 20,Yuffie with 10 and Barret with none with fucking instead of talking being 50+. If you actually have to drop Tifa below 10, then that really doesn't make any sense with the frequency I got talking over my 1000+ hours of playing VII. Is it possible the Eidos 1998 PC version has a different algorithm? Because that's what I played.

When you pick her, Aerith pretends to act all tough until admitting relief. She shows clear disappointment when you choose Tifa and her dialogue even trails off. Given the opposite scenario, Tifa reacts the opposite way and prefers it when you choose to show more care Aerith (playfully teasing Cloud about not caring for her). If anything, it actually shows that Aerith has more interest in being noticed by Cloud.

It's pretty much confirmed at that point that Cloud isn't legitimately dating Tifa in any way so him confirming it is him possibly being a dick or hating on Aeris and him denying it sounds like he's trying to run game and failing miserably. As for Aeris' response to him saying Tifa is a girlfriend, what else would she say?

It's easy for people to interpret things the way they want, so instead of looking at the things that can be argued I'm asking for the things that can't be denied. Like Cloud telling Tifa he joined SOLDIER because he wanted her to notice him.
