Each character had 5 custom stages for their story modes. Extreme Legends even added one to each. One of the things that pissed me off about SW4 was that they made the story mode more like DW when SW was always more about the personal stories. At least they realized this and went back to it with SW4-II

3 Ultimate is the best in terms of content and guest characters are cool, but a LOT of characters are cloned and with dogshit movesets.

4 has top tier gameplay but only half of the content of that game (and no secondary mode) plus the new camp interface is horrible. if they could polish it, it would be the best because the story is actually pretty good (written by the Suikoden guy, so no wonder he did such a big cast justice)

i played 3 years ago at a friends house everytime i visted. the number of stages were lacking compared to how many characters you could play from and yes, you could make your own stages and play other peoples stages with online mode but it didint feel the same.

Apparently it's been improving after updates. That's the beauty of modern gaming, you can release a complete piece of garbage but if you actually update it you can turn people's opinion around.

8 Empires is completely inferior to 7 Empires in gameplay. The only reason to play 8E is if you absolutely must have the newcomers and movesets added to DW8 and it's expansions.

SW4 has a story mode that goes from Oda Nobunaga's rise to power against Imagawa Yoshimoto to Yukimura's death and the unification of Japan divided by clans (Mouri, Oda, Sekigahara, Tokugawa, Takeda, Uesugi...)

SW4-II is mostly gaiden stages and what ifs, basically an expansion pack without the meat of the story from the original.

After jim sterling video, NPCs started disliking it on mass and basically down voting it to oblivion and calling it the worst DW, even when DW1, DW2, DW6 are way worse (I would argue DW3 as well, since it was a prototype for DW4). That being said, it's not a good game, but it the whole open world thing could've been a GODLY setup for an Empire game, don't know why they didn't do it.

As a rotk autist Is right. 7 for plot, 8 for tiddie, 5 if you get into it. Avoid 6 and 9, both were titles they experimented/bought into memes on and it did not turn out well.

If you want something more academic and brainlet proof, YouTube search for rotk podcast which has a Chinese dude telling the whole story and explaining think contexts.

I highly recommend the 2010 series if nothing else, it's free and quite good and full of memes, just expect a bit of budget jank

I miss when all you could do with weapons was level them up, and you could only just equip accessories/equipment. It was extremely simple, but it just worked. Still not a fan of the crazy skill stacking mechanic that exists for weapons now. 9 kind of went back to that, but then they complicate it again with all the items and different coins from hunting/gathering.

That is the base game, it includes a ton of character tickets.
There's a free version that has almost no playable characters though. And they want you to buy the characters.
Technically you could get dw9 and the 2-3 people you want to play and have a very cheap game for the time put in.

Don't know if you'd consider this musou or not but Dragon Quest Heroes 2 is a pretty good port. I also heard Warriors Orochi 4 runs perfectly fine too

If 7 or 8 tiddy actually turns you into a legit fan, then make DW4 your first real game to enjoy. The series being pretty much the same is true, so once you've played one you pretty much get it. No need to build up to it, the best thing when actually becoming a fan of DW is to skip straight to 4, generally considered the series' highest point in terms of quality. Graphics are the only thing it's lacking compared to the later gens.

400 hour player here. Its gotten better but I stopped playing a month ago. There's still stuff they should update. The AI is kind of messed up and will sometimes turn around when attacking you. When you change the music in your home/hideaway, there's no way to set it to default again. Fire gems break the game by giving you +150% attack and equipping gems cant be shared between weapons which means you have to horde them in your inventory

I don't know why anyone who was a legitmate fan of these games would tell ANYONE to not get Xtreme Legends add ons. You shouldn't even bother with the games unless you attach Xtreme Legends onto it. Especially the later entries as they literally just refuse to patch giant gameplay holes so they can fix it and brand it as a "new feature" in Xtreme Legends. 8 is an entirely different game without Xtreme Legends.

I'm (very pleasantly) surprised with all the love for DW4 in this thread. I remember when 4 first came out the general consensus was that 3 was better.

From what I understand, the games are just the same story over and over again told in different ways, with the changes being to gameplay or new characters, which is why people generally just recommend one of the most recent ones.

I guess she's too anime which is probably why they made All-Stars and decided to take out the guest characters in WO4 to keep it DW/SW.

4 was how I got into the series. Went over to my friends place and they were playing it co-op and I was fucking amazed by it. I immediately bought it and played it over and over and over. It'll always have that place in my heart even if I think a couple of the other games are better.

It came out last October with a overwhelming "meh". WO3 Ultimate did everything so well with story, characters, and content in general that it may very well be considered the best musou game of all. WO4 nailed the gameplay right, but there is literally nothing else to do after beating the main story. It has the guinness world record of most playable characters in a game (170), so there's that.

Cao Hong wasn't a fuck up, he was just the least accomplished of the major Cao Generals. Cao Shuang fucked up by being overly naive and trustful of Sima Yi. All the Sima propaganda of Cao Shuang being evil doesn't change the fact that Cao Shuang treated Sima Yi like a father and never sought to harm the Sima family, while Sima Yi exterminated everyone descended from Cao Shuang's father Cao Zhen.

The irony though is that the later Sima family wanking of Sima Yi contributed to the downfall of the dynasty. See, only male-line descendants of the "Founding" Emperor are eligible to become Emperor themselves. Sima Yan, by honoring his grandfather as the "true" founding Emperor of the Jin dynasty, basically made all his uncles and cousins eligible contenders for the throne. And one uncle indeed did usurp the throne from Sima Yan's son Sima Zhong at one point.

Eastern Jin was founded by Sima Rui, who was descended from Sima Yi but not from Sima Shi, Zhao, or Yan.

For even more irony, this means that the accusations that Cao Shuang was planning to usurp the throne were utter nonsense, since Cao Shuang was not a descendant of Cao Cao, Cao Song, or even Cao Teng. The common ancestor was Cao Teng's father. Cao Shuang was far, far too distantly removed to have a legitimate claim on the throne.

At least DW9 managed to get there. Nobody remembered the One Piece Musou or Fist of North Star Musou.

They all set in three Kingdoms period, so the overall story is the same. But they add new missions with every installment and new playable characters.

Same story, just showed slightly different each time with new characters thrown in.

The basic premise is a historical period of war in China (which throughout the years had myths and legends and hyperbole attached to it). One of the bloodiest wars in history.

So the first few games only have a roster of the main figures. As the series progressed they added more and more historical figures (and a few OC donut steels) to the roster, which expands on the overall story significantly and why things turned out the way they did, but the main players have been there from the start.

Then you have DW8 which even added sidegoals for the missions, which if you completed would give you the option at a specific point to go the hypothetical route where ___ doesn't die or ___ wins this battle and so and so.

So I know 9 is pretty universally hated - but can you at least play through the campaign with one character? Thats something I disliked in 7/8. I get it wanting to hold onto the historical aspects, but I normally have a favorite with each faction I want to stick with without having to go to freemode.

I enjoyed 7/8 a lot but that was the one thing that bugged me. Some of the Second string characters were only around for like two battles and that was it.

Also I remember playing one of the warriors games (maybe the first samurai warriors) where events would happen randomly and would cause the story to branch off in different paths depending on if you could stop them or not. Any other games in the series like that?

any rot3k fans know which ones let you roam around as a free agent? I saw someone playing one where he was able to sign up with whomever he wanted and was kind of a roaming warrior. I think it was an older one that he had to get an english patch for though.

In 9, each character plays through a number of chapters of their faction and gets an ending. The problem is that some characters get like 2-4 chapters while others get more than 6 to playthrough. Another thing is that if you do a playthrough with 2 characters of the same faction, you will see they play out almost identically besides the ending.

8-9-10 all let you do this and imo they're my favorites with no standalone. 8's world moves a lot slower than 10's and allows for comfy styles. 10's ai seems a lot more aggressive and hoard-y. 9 is a good middleground between the two

I always shit on Yukimura for being overrated as all fuck, but Spirit of Sanada and Nioh made even me like him quite a lot. The story is quite engaging and it's cool to see all the skirmishes and battles your characters take part in, instead of just jumping around and doing a few major ones for different clans.
