Discord is perfect, it's better than IRC and I say that as someone who used IRC from 1997 to 2014, it's only nostalgia that could make you think otherwise.

The best way to find good Discord servers is to just go to the ones that are focused on the hobby you want. Going on public Discord listings is like going to an IRC server and using /list to discover random channels.

The best thing to do with Discord is just hunt down as many interesting ones as possible, join them and then lurk for a while to see whether they're your kind of people or not. If not, leave and try again somewhere else.

I've never come across anyone offensively annoying in Discord, only people who I just don't get on with or don't relate to. I've never encountered the 'Discord Tranny' thing, the only way you'd find that is if you went specifically looking for it.

I run a highly active Discord of around 600 people and am in other large servers.

The userbase of a server varies dramatically based on its core purpose and any founding material. My server was originally for a general thread somewhere on Yea Forums and has kind of spun off into its own thing since then - so my user base is predominantly composed of adult males with more than a couple autists and weirdos (who get banned if they cause too many problems). I'm in servers where the average age is 30 and servers where the average is probably 14. Servers that are nothing but pure SJWs and servers that are /pol/ 2.0. Some servers are nonstop cringey furry RP bullshit (servers seemingly completely unrelated to furry RP) and others that ruthlessly ban anything like that (including my server). A lot has to do with people running the place - shitty mods and admins do more to destroy a community than the userbase ever could.

And frankly, this was the exact same shit I saw on Teamspeak servers and IRC back before Discord was a thing. Everything depends on who the audience is composed of and who runs the place. Discord happens to be run by a cancerous company and dev team, but really, it's just a more popular showing of the exact same chatroom bullshit that has been around for a very long time.

In my experience with guilds it's usually a few people that does it, then everyone joins in. If you want to have a good guild with good players it's best to just start your own. Enforce the rules, don't allow any retards in.
