What's your favorite video game box art?
What's your favorite video game box art?
this one
Magic Knight Rayearth is cool
Thought it was a Tatsurou Yamashita album cover at first
I'm trying to figure out why they felt it necessary to ruin the art with big letters saying "Action/RPG".
Gaiares JP cover looks so damn cool. I wish I could get a poster of it
came here expecting this, didnt dissapoint
How was it possible for them to fuck up this much?
I like this.
Does this game really have a tower that goes up into space?
God I hate that artstyle so much
I wasn't even aware this game existed. There sure are some obscure games that somehow got NA releases.
I remember discovering the game via classic game room when he still did videos, but the thing I liked the most was the OST and anime style cutscenes
>north american box cover fucking sucks though
youtube.com
This one
steath shmup thread?
They just seem to have pretty badass covers
Its the thinking mans genre
Certainly not as artistic and outright beautiful as some posted thus far, but this version of Dark Souls' box art always stood out to me.
There's this 1999 game, Racing Lagoon, that has an overall mysterious to experimental style in its graphics.
It's very much inspired by TDR design and late '90s game HUDs. It's basically a Square Enix title like FF but with racing - lots of cutscenes and RPG elements and exploration.
It looks incredible for the time, with high polygon count and texture numbers, and an extended soundtrack.
The game never received a sequel even if it was a niche hit in Japan, and the critics weren't approving.

youtu.be
I knew someone would post this one.
>action game entirely dubbed in english with high production values
>prospect of being a late-life cycle hit for the PS1
>doesn't get released
What a shame.
What the heck is this game? I have never heard of it.
Prolly anything non American. Merican boxart always equates to
face or figure = holding a gun = looking angry/retarded
thumbnail reminds me of this
>Aesthetics like these died as we entered the 3D age
ITS NOT FAIR BROS, DECADES OF BEING DENIED DIESELPUNK
Shmup. Bosses are neat. Enemy variety sucks but the art is great. Made by only 1 guy from what i heard.
Damn that is some really good music. And fucking RPG-style encounters in a racing game? I can't say I've ever seen that before. I notice there's a lot of English text so this looks like it could be pretty playable despite not having a translation, I'll have to check it out sometime.
I didn't play Phalanx, did a guy with a banjo actually show up somewhere?
Nice thread.
this dude also did amazing album covers
I like that not a single one of these box arts is an accurate representation of the game.
No. They used that art as a way to stand out. It worked, as people would wtf and at least flip the box over.
this is a good thread. thank u
Still have my asian copy of this game. It works on pal consoles and came with multiple language options.
It's also my most favorite game of all time so I'm not surprised.
Got this for the Xbox one last week. I bet it doesn't have a physical release on the Xbox. Fucking Microsoft.
It actually is by the same artist that did those covers so you were right to think that.
The Us verson is a fuckin disgrace.
The bosses are very neat, the music not so much.
Still a decent shmup from a post mortem Cave era.
I really do like the pose she does here
>box art thread
>no one posted Katamari Demacy
Wtf
The pal version too. Even came with a fucked up 4th disc, that's why I decided to dig up on play Asia for a chink copy.
Even the case is better as it holds the 4 disc's separately.
I bought a copy of this game on a whim with a used PS2 years ago and was surprised at how good it looked for a cover that uses a 3D model instead of some art. I got the PS2 for piracy so I don't own many actual PS2 games but I'm glad this is one of the few I do own just because the box art is so nice.
Rented this thinking it would be like Sailor Moon. Got sweet Mecha action. Re-rented it a ton, good times.
>Demacy
Iconic. The game is dreadfully long though so the only way I'd ever replay it is if they rereleased it in HD.
>DEMACIA
This.
We really got the short end of the stick with this game in the west.
Never understood why they felt the need to add Chronicles to the title but I appreciated that they toned it down for the US box art.
Great thread, props to anons dumping.
Loved this fucker here as a kid.
Who's excited for the new Aleste game coming this year?
Shame the actual game itself is boring. How do you make a SHMUP that has no replayability?
So does the JP version work on NA consoles with English? I know a few X360 games can do that
This one too.
>euro as fuck
>says everything you need to know
>airbrushed by hand, literal craftsmanship on display
Shitty alt box arts were almost excusable back in the day. But they should have known better by the 360. Then again they are still doing it, though now you need to buy a CE for decent art.
Never heard of Aleste but I see it has a cute girl so you have my attention.
The original is better.
Had to look this up to make sure it's true. Was announced late last year and there's still no news. M2's working on it so it's in good hands.
I agree that the US box art is bad but I'm not seeing what's so special about this box art. It's just a closeup of his face.
>youtube.com
>See this image
>Must be Takehiko Inoue, but no way he'd make a game cover
>It's him
Nice one
Absolutely timeless, best NA cover imo
I like both but prefer Douk's
Why is that tree so disappointed in that dude?
I find it weird when garbage games get actual good artists on board.
Whoa, how did they get a giraffe on the roof?
>Special glasses included
Tell me more about the glasses
Good taste user.
>
It's from the dude that did Vagabond.
This exactly. For Tales of Vesperia back on the 360, you had to buy the special edition to have Fujishima's godlike art on the cover. The standard release had the lame unstylized art that most Tales games got until Xillia where we finally started getting Japan's covers.
Admittedly the Japanese box art is just a ship with a big green wang so I get why they didn't use it but if they used this picture they sure would have gotten my attention.
Anything Steve Purcell did was like magic to me as a little kid, I literally couldn't believe how a normal human could produce something this cool.
>Company is called Zoom
Why did that make me laugh
I don't know the answer to that. On play Asia it was only marked as working on PAL consoles. And only the Asian version not the true jp one, but I think that was bullshit as my friend had a Japanese copy.
It probably works on ntsc/n. And it probably works on any Xbox One from any region anyway
He made the art for that game not just the cover.
Yeah, my favourite Manga of all time. Real and Slam Dunk are amazing too.
I almost never see picrelated in these threads. It's amazing.
This.
What is he holding in his hand?
The platform you bounce the ball off.
That's a nice cover. If I had $50 to spare I could buy a Mega Drive copy and scan the cover in 600dpi to print posters with.
I mean, yeah, but... It's a little small
I had this problem with Skyward Sword PAL release.
Fuck that shitty gold background, I wanted the original with the blue sky artwork.
That's what she said.
Oh fuck now on further inspection
>PAL
Why was my copy the gold version then? Did that came out on the collector edition?
He's waiting for Link and it's just some dude with a helmet.
He's not some goddamn casual. That size is enough.
Had this one.
I was never a huge fan of the gold backgrounds in Zelda boxarts.
I think it's them trying to do a throwback to the original Zelda's gold cartridge. Like the pedigree, you see a gold box and you know you're in for a good game.
>Link is not even centered otherwise it would hide Fi's face
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA OCD kicking in
Too bad the game is garbage
It still makes for fuggly boxarts. I'm glad they stopped doing this.
Sweet I always wanted to play in Midgar when it got overgrown with vegetation
What happened to Cave? I thought they were still around.
They centered it on his arm.
secret of mana
also pokemon red because of how nostalgic it makes me feel
also pic related
Ah, that's interesting. Is the physical release a limited run or something? Doesn't sound like the kind of game that would get a physical release.
One of my favorite RE covers
They just do mobile games now.
Yeah. I was comparing it to the blue sky box art which makes much more sense too since the top of the Master Sword shines and it's a mechanic in the game you have to use during the final fight
It's limited probably.
To be entirely fair to Wind Waker I have that box and that image is not an accurate representation of what it looks like in real life, it's darker and has a shine to it.
I love puyo puyo !!!!!
And stream on Twitch sometimes
Make way, patrician coming through
Love me some PSO.
What the fuck.
Link to their channel please
Who?
I'll post most of Atari Poster Book v01 here.
They are "half unnofficial stream team of Cave" according to their Twitter, not sure what that means twitch.tv/cave_shooters
>Shilling your shitty YT channel
Good job. More people need to know about my boi Thor
My nigga
Is the game good? The cover exites me, but I have not investigated the game any further.
I liked it. Some levels were pretty good and the game was beautiful.
But got really boring near the end, I never bothered finishing it.
Just play it. The translation is now available it's aight
Literally only 12 of us have played this.
Hiroshi Nagai, Eizin Suzuki is the GOAT
I've not been able to beat the first 2 stages without dying, but this cover is great
>Gideon got off his fat faggot ass to translate If
Holy fucking finally
>6 bucks a month to subscribe to their channel
Just release new games again Cave, fucking hell
I have a physical copy of pic related somewhere that I got from a thrift store. Never heard of it despite it having star-studded cast. I think I've met one person on Yea Forums who also played it. I can't believe there isn't a Ross' Game Dungeon episode on this yet.
Mana games in general tend to have really good box art.
Shitappa is literally cute and worth the sub alone I'm so desperate for a new Cave game on PC. No Saidaioujou EVER
Thank you friend
Don't most Cave games only come to arcade? How would you even play them?
Neat, will do when I get acess to a proper computer. Does it do the cover justice?
They've released decent ports of their games lately. Ketsui was ported on PS4 by M2 for example
It's an SMT game, if anything the cover doesn't do it enough justice.
I have a soft spot for this one, even though I dislike the games.
Looks like a box of candy
>Cute girl
Neat
>Shmup
Pass
CUT MY LIFE INTO PIECES
Hey i love this one too.
Even while keeping his adversaries at bay, Bugs is still able to smile for the cameras.
I bought most of their games on the 360 last gen.
Missed on the Mega collection because it was too expensive for me though
Marvin looks really stressed out.
He's probably being chased by the rape monster. Forgot the name but there was a rape monster in the show.
Yes it's the arcade flyer but I think it's the better version of this art compared to the other covers
This guy
Runner-up, I don't even have a clue what this game is about, I just love the cover
And third choice, well it's technically cheating, it's the cover of the soundtrack, but they nailed it so well with its simplicity
Still sad they stuck with the US format ever since
Thor is kino
Japanese box art for Alisia Dragoon on Genesis. Nothing's ever topped it for me.
Old PC games were king at this
Is there some nice database of high-res game covers? The Cover Project doesn't have for example so I'm wondering if there's a better source.
Thecoverproject is mostly just fan made covers, and they have a ton of shodily made ones, I wouldn't trust it.
There's not centralized site, It's all over the place, I can tell you my sources but there's not a centralized one.
For SEGA games, segaretro has high quality scans for almost every game, and it's generally really well organized for everything sega.
Gaming Alexandria is continuously uploading a bunch of really high quality scans for a lot of stuff, but it's not comprehensive, but every week they put out new stuff, they never stop, and what they put out it's so fucking good and giant that you can't even post them here as how fucking huge they are.
Then if you want a more generalized place, which just acts as a scrapper for everything they manage to find on the web, go to Launchbox games database, it's not perfect but you might be able to find something if you exhausted all other options, but no guarantee it's some high quality scan.
Other than that, go to google images and enable the size filter so only large images pop up.
Damn that's cool
Bruh, please
I wanted a remake of this entire series in 3D like Fatal Frame but lower detail
I have a Children of Mana poster from an old issue of Nintendo Power, I hear Children of Mana is not very good (I've only played the Mana trilogy) but the poster fucking rocks. Can't find a good quality picture of it though.
That's Hiroshi Nagai and I think he only did one Tatsuro Yamashita cover. You're probably thinking of Eizin Suzuki who did some covers for him, along with a bunch more from that era.
Well the fact remains that he did do a cover so the only mistake is the use of plural.
This game was the first time I got scamed online. Some dude was selling the CE for 27 euros, I bought it and he never replied back.
I decided to call to his number and the guy that picked the phone threatened me, and because I was a kid I decided to just do nothing and lose my 27 euros.
I only brought it up because it's very common for people to confuse them both. The cover he did for Tatsu was very underwhelming
Who's the artist that did this?
This is . a perfect fighting game cover. This makes you want to kick Geese's smug ass face.
One of the few remakes where the box art is better than the original.
Too bad the game itself isn't.
shit taste
too many to pick, this one is really nice though.
I doubt you could even imagine it.
At a cursory glance, Cover Project might have higher quality files. Sega Retro's Comix Zone cover is 2mb, CP has a 6mb scan. However CP's scan it darker. I don't know if they used CP as a source or what, but in any case thanks for the list. I'll check all of the above.
