Flash auto-battlers have existed for fucking decades, and some are actually pretty good.
These games are popular because gaming is for casuals now, you're just going to have to learn to live with that.
Decades ago, games were considered for nerds and only "hardcore gamers". Now that games are the most accessible as they've ever been, shit like this is extremely popular. You end up with people that play games without wanting to actually play them. It's one of the reasons Twitch is so huge.
So you come out with a game that's perfect for having on another monitor while you can have Facebook / Discord on the other, it's pretty much a no-brainer that these would be extremely popular. However I haven't seen anyone sitting and trying to argue that these are extremely skill based games that require enormous amounts of brain power. Sure a lot of these that are coming out are talking about having a "ranked" mode. As I don't agree with ranked being in a game heavily based on RNG, I think most people just want a way to track their "skill" vs other people playing the game.
