So glad the GL turned out fake. The thing I hated about its lineup is that it had Geno instead of a better SE character like literally any Dragon Quest character. Honestly, the only one that I actually gave a shit about in the Grinch leak was Banjo & Kazooie but even after it was proven fake, it never shook my faith that he'd make it as DLC so ultimately, there was never really any blow to begin with.

The only other interesting character in the leak was Mach Rider which mostly comes down to the fact that the retro characters have always ended up being pretty unique and interesting revivals so it would have been cool to see what Sakurai could have done with him, especially if the bike was a constant part of his moveset like the leak implied, but at the end of the day, my priority has always been Banjo. I still believed he was coming and I got him. Grinch leak was really just a fun event to pick apart and discuss while it lasted but we didn't really lose out on anything significant with it not being real.

Sakurai usually plays the original games for reference material, Sonic 06 was the most recent one when Brawl was in development. His victory theme also is a direct rip from 06, so it's not hard to imagine Sakurai having played it at some point for reference.

The grinch leak really rounded out the roster more than what we got since there were more than 3 characters. It had the perfect cast of characters and I would trade joker for isaac and plant for geno any day.

Programmers just had troubles renderring his arms and legs while in motion, so they decided to make him limbless.
The design was then kept because they though it would be fun to have a character who can throws his punches to attack ennemies.

That's not a technical limitation then, that's just inept programming. They tried to cut back on sprite animation by making all of his limbs separate elements but then fucked up and couldn't figure out how to make the lazy way work. Again, plenty of other devs figured out how to put multiple sprites together into one working piece on the SNES.

Also, you say his design was born out of a technical issue and not intended to be his gimmick but if their reason was that they kept it because literally throwing his punches was a neat idea, then my point still stands. They recognized it as an interesting gimmick but never actually did anything with it, even in later games that didn't have the same limitations as the SNES did. Everything about him that could make him stand out is so underutilized to the point of serving no purpose because the reality is that he doesn't do anything that other platforming characters haven't done before. Hell, his newest games actually made him even MORE boring because all of the playable characters got homogenized into the same exact mechanics for the sake of multiplayer. Again, he's an extremely boring choice for Smash because nothing he actually does can be called his own and it's not like he pioneered anything either.
