The whole "Steam has an obligation to give these developers better cuts, or else we WILL destroy them" ploy is just a way to get more developers on board with their shitty service because of how cheap it looks by comparison. Steam already had the cheapest take in town compared to every retailer in the world, and only outdone by GOG at some point. Epic is getting their foot in the door by throwing their excess money at would-be partners, but their store is too far behind to other stores in structure, and they even admit that they can't keep doing this kind of deal with publishers forever, so they're trying to get as much support as possible before they have to cut the percentage take or the guaranteed sales.

CD Keys got broken almost immediately. They never worked against piracy or duplication, but they kept using them for over a decade. Dev here. I'm sure it's been said elsewhere in the thread but we fucking TRIED all that. Sales were terrible, and promotion was nonexistent. Some made it work, but those were outliers. Steam provided both a sales platform, AND a means of discovery not only through Valve's storefront promotion but also through users. The ability to passively see what your friends are buying, playing, and recommending is huge.
It might be easier to try it *now*. Think about when Steam really started taking off in 2009-ish. The internet has changed a lot since then. Youtube had only been around for a few years at that point. That's weird to think about, but it's true. The whole emergence of Youtube gaming channels as providing visibility hadn't been firmly established.
