Dragon Quest thread

Played the demo and really enjoy it. Ditching the chapter base system and adding a second character pretty much made me love this game way more than the first. Liked the idea of Builders 1 but having to start completely over each time really got tiresome.

3 seens to be a good one to start, as it looks like it´s the most dragon questy while being modern enough to not be too simple. Is it that bad starting with it not having played 1 and 2?

DQ4 gives a nice idea on how Dragon Quest games kind of work. Since Dragon Quest almost feels like it's in chapters. Where each town or areas has it's own little story within the major story and you play them out. DQ5 is great being more main character focused plus a fun monster recruitment system to build your own monster team. DQ11 is out now and I really love it but seem the Switch version will be the version you really want since it has lots of addons to it.

Start with 8. PS2 or 3DS, whatever works. Trust me.

Switch but I enjoy holding and playing it right before bed so a nice little bit of building and collecting is what I am there for.

I wish the Switch was 60fps but its not so I'm going with PS4.

I bought and already played the PS4 version. I'm getting it again on Switch because of the 40+ additional stuff they're adding and the UI/Quality improvements. It's not just a simple port.

The creator of the series personally recommends starting with 4.
1, 2 and 3 are a connected trilogy, you need to have played 1 and (to a lesser extent) 2 in order to make sense of 3's ultimate twist. 1 can be beaten in a day, and there's no shame in using a guide for 2.
4, 5 and 6 are a more loosely connected trilogy. 5's touted as the best game in the series, but it shares certain plot elements with 4 that'll only make sense if you've played that first. 6 is a bit of an oddball, but it's still decent.
Haven't played 7 just yet, but it's reportedly really fucking long.
8's also a good starting point.
9 used to have an online store with DLC content, but your only ways to get it now is if you emulate it, or get a flashcart.
LOL 10 never ever.

There's no difference between the DS and Smartphone version of 6. Aside from the Smartphone version having stretched resolution and worse controls. 4 is flawed in every version we've gotten in the west.

Worse controls is subjective, and the graphics being stretched? You need your eyes checked. DQ IV with the Party Chat available is only legally doable with the Smartphone version, but if you want it enabled on DS, I am sure there is a romhack for that. Maybe. I'm not aware of it.

Did Dragon Quest Builders I ever get a physical release, or is it digital only? Also why am I retarded. Never picked up the physical versions of V (DS), VII (3DS), and VIII (3DS) when I had the chance. Now they’re hell to chase down... and pay for.

That doesn't make it better... The only thing to do in the game is level. The problems with DQVI were in the story and dual world mechanics. They should have fixed those, not changed EXP rates and classes.

Indeed, that is the main flaw of DQ VI. In ALL iterations. And the recommendations chart is about playing the best iteration of each entry. So, why argue with the results of the latest one?
