I both liked Lilly for being mature and responsible, and her route for doing what I honestly thought was a good job of displaying the conflict between one's supposed duty and what you want. I also thought the romantic buildup was top notch.

You can just mark a save point before committing to a route. The game gives you a shitload of slots to play with, so just save every time you're given a dialogue option if you wanna play it safe.

You can clear every route in 15 hours if you're a slow reader.

I'd call it pretty original. You can argue other games have done similar gimmicks (in fact I've played most of them) but DDLC did them better in most ways. I'd say that it matters more when it comes to who pulls something off right compared to who comes up with an idea but fails to execute it, the execution is more important in the end. Irisu Syndrome is great, but getting through the puzzle shit to get to the story is sort of annoying, and the language barrier kept most people away from it.

DDLC did everything right when it launched free on Steam with zero fanfare, listed itself as a basic no-gimmick story, presented itself as a no-gimmick story for the first couple hours, and then when the twists come they come down hard, leaving the player both excitedly confused and extremely engaged.

I mean, DDLC does have a good execution, I won't deny that. I like the characters and dialogue, they feel very authentic to the genre excepting the insanity and considering how many DDLC fanmods there are that can't even replicate standard Japanese VN writing that's clearly much harder than it looks. The glitches look and sound cool at least and some of them are pulled off well like the rewind I talked about earlier and being stuck with Yuri's corpse for an entire weekend. I also liked the central theme of poetry, how it tied into the characters and how you could get a good feel for their personalities by the way they wrote which is also a pretty hard thing to do. I just didn't think much of the constant jumpscare effects.

I dunno, I didn't say it was an original idea, just that I'd find it more interesting. Having Monika be slightly more competent at rewriting her universe would make for a much more tense experience if the whole thing was much more subtle than the constant glitches and her obviously having to do with it by the way she tries to handwave them.

I mean, in both cases, I didn't really mind because I was expecting that sort of thing as soon as a character said, "You know how a story might be going one way and the completely catches you off guard because of your own lack of imagination?" in act 1. As soon as I read that, I instantly thought "Oh, this going to be one of those VNs, isn't it?" And having the whole ordeal be over with rather quickly also kept it from getting old too fast. It doesn't have time to start getting boring with how quickly she drops the charade.

With the right execution it could've been pretty cool. Oh well.

I liked how Everlasting Summer did it. It's a pretty standard dating VN tone-wise, but one of the routes just comes right the fuck out of nowhere with different main characters that suddenly find themselves trapped in another universe where all the people they knew act differently and shit suddenly turns into a horror movie and people start going insane and even dying. Considering the route is a bit obscure to find you probably already spent a lot of time getting to know the characters so it's pretty effective.

Meh, part of the magic that made DDLC a success was that the full game is like 4 hours long, if Monika was more competent that means more time in the "basic" part of the VN, stretching the game's length too far because the current length is perfect for let's plays and streams, if the game took 8+ hours streamers wouldn't bother with it nearly as much. A competent Monika would be much harder to figure out and significantly harder to overthrow,

There's a couple jumpscare effects, yeah, in the last 1 hour of gameplay. They probably could have cut 1 or 2 of them out, but again who knows how much that changes things. The subtle things they did were amazing, for example I don't know how well most people are aware of this, but the game has randomness to it where some glitches only happen sometimes, for example a poster on the wall can be replaced for a scene to be a picture of Sayori hanging herself instead, in some playthroughs it happens multiple times but I'm pretty sure in some playthroughs it never happens at all. There's a few good glitches that might not happen at all, like 1 subtle one slowly zooms in and turns the screen, slow enough that you'll realize "wait, why is everything crooked... wait, the wall normally shows more stuff, too..." before you realize the screen is moving. One of the only things I could suggest to actually improve the game would be to randomize a few of those jumpscares to only happen on a few playthroughs, which is true for some of them but with more randomness it might "get" more people.

No because it's not a dumb meme, it's just a standard romance VN of surprisingly decent quality for a free game made by amateurs who met on Yea Forums. DDLC got huge because it's like 5 hours long and full of crazy shocking gimmicks. Most people don't have the patience to read an actual VN, and for those who do there are many out there that are just better than KS.
