Yes. It's probably the largest problem in media today how it's all based on itself. Early video games didn't have anything to base on so there was no limit to the imagination, they used d&d, movies, books, short stories, real life and funneled all that into an original game. Nowadays games are made by people obsessed with video games making games that are like the games they grew up playing. They don't think critically of every aspect of the game, most things are decided because that's what other games do. They'll copy an idea and change a few things so it seems fresh. Same shit with anime, every single anime now is just a collection of character tropes, there's hardly any depth to any character or story.

But it's also a problem of modern times, a 15 year old today has seen thousands of movies, shows, played hundreds of games, watched countless youtube analysts pull apart every story and scene in dozens of movies. The standard for quality narrative material is rising fast. People these days are becoming incredibly narratively intelligent. We'll see a movie like Prometheus and fall asleep of boredom, while a lot of the plot is retarded there's still amazing craftsmanship in the movie and any person from the '80's of whatever would shit themselves over a movie like that.
