It's a true upgrade from Super Saiyan because it has all of the power from the later stages of the Super Saiyan 1 forms and none of the drawbacks and limitations. Aesthetically speaking, it's perfectly fine and noticeable if you see the visual cues such as the lightning and the raised hair. It's better looking than Super Saiyan Blue or Super Saiyan God. Even Super Saiyan 3 looks better than those even though it's nonsensical that the hair grows that long and makes it complicated to animate.

Super Saiyan 4 isn't a direct follow up either. In order to become a Super Saiyan 4 you need to have the ability to become a Super Saiyan while possessing a tail, so you can become a Gold Great Ape. In theory, Gohan would be able to do it too if he kept his tail, or if he used the Blutz Wave Generator like Vegeta. Goten and Trunks would be able to do it too. The fact that it's called SS4 is a misnomer.

You're right about that, but I figured the other user was suggesting that it should follow the typical super saiyan look with gold hair simply because it's a form that comes after SS1,2, and 3, which isn't the case. The fact that it requires a tail and controlling the Gold Great Ape form just makes it a different kind of transformation.

the explanation was that the crown on his head was limiting his power, so he couldn't become a true super saiyan, when it breaks it becomes the typical yellow color.

Everyone thought goku was the saiyan of legend cause he was the first one to unleash it in 1000 years. In the original movie broly does this as a kid and builds up this reputation as he continues destroying shit at his father's whim so everyone thinks he is the legendary super saiyan. The super version refers to him as this from the get go cause of his freak genetics and abnormal power.

In the canon a single saiyan is born every like 10,000 years (not sure on the years exactly) with the innate ability to turn super saiyan at birth goku and vegeta achieved super saiyan through intense training where this nonsense completely falls apart however is when kid trunks and goten can turn super saiyan before they even reach the age of ten i guess you could argue their dads trained them respectively but lol... also videl "goes super saiyan" because shes carrying gohans fetus which basically jumps the shark on the entire super saiyan phenomenon but is hilarious, gohans fetus can go super saiyan but not nappa or raditz

Google S-Cells, also goten and trunks weren't ssj because of their 'training', they had huge unlocked potential due to being hybrids. The REAL part that doesn't make sense is why Gohan didn't also have this boost, but my understanding is Toryiama forgot to add them.

That's not weird at all, the answer is right there in your sentence, "transformation". He transforms from a little kid into a giant ape monster after all, transforming into a halfway point between the kid and the ape monster is pretty reasonable.

They all have the Saiyan-Hybrid boost. The thing about S-Cells is that it's completely contrived. Gohan was affected in another way in that his base form had potential to become much stronger than the average saiyan, thanks to being a hybrid, thus Ultimate Gohan. S-Cells is just made-up bullshit that implies that new genes appeared in Goku and Vegeta when they became Super Saiyans and passed them on to Goten and Trunks when they fucked their wives.

What actually doesn't make sense is how Future Trunks didn't become a super saiyan until he was a teenager, as opposed to present Trunks being able to do it easily as a child because of "S-Cells"
