I just finished DQ5, probably the most heartwarming game I’ve ever played. Idk which I should play next, 6 some say is mediocre, 7 is really fucking long, and so is 8. Which one is best after 5 Yea Forums?

you fucked up by not playing 4 first then 5 then 6
none. 5 is the peak and none of the others will make you feel the same way again.
this but 8
Go play 4. I recommend the mobile version since it has the party chat feature
Ive played them all and 5 kinda sucks in retrospect outside the generations thing
One of the worst final bosses in the series, no jobs, very short.
Play 3 and 4.
Or 8 if you already played them
I think 5 has the best story, 8 might be your best bet. 7 is really long, I can confirm that, but it wasn't bad, either. 6 Is considered lesser than most of the series, beyond made the dated first two.
>playing 5 without playing 4
I hope nobody does this, Imagina having zero context for the zenithian castle, weapons or Estark
what the fuck
4 is better than 5 too characters and story wise IMO
i'd have said 8 since it's the best game ever made.
based
They're all good, although 2 is a bit aged toward the end. Play 4 next, and 6 is still fine.
One thing that I think will be good for the future is that Solo is in Smash Bros now. People learning about the series through that game will want to play the entries with the Smash characters in it, so more people may be inclined to play 4 before 5 now.
I played 4 and loved it, don’t worry
Play 8, it’s way better than 6 or 7
Dragon Quest VIII is my favorite, but if you want a short game, just play them in order. The first game in 8-12 hours.
>The first game in 8-12 hours.
incidentally, the first game is trash
Cool opinion, bro.
PLAY IX A TOPE, TÚ
why not playing the first 5 ones on a tablet/smartphone? whats wrong with those versions?
III and VIII are the best after V
6 is my favourite so play it
I'm kind of afraid to keep playing V on Twilight Menu because someone said that they saved in Hay and got sent straight to Gotha on their next load, ruining their save probably because of an anti-piracy thing even though they AP patched it
But then again I cannot find any mention of this particular anti-piracy online
Also I backed up my save a couple of times
>using numbers instead of Roman Numerals because you're so arrogant that you think people will be confused by them
Yikes.
Why was Debora the only wife with a personality?
I-III horrible translations and smartphone controls.
V has the same translation as DS, but with worse controls.
The only benefit to playing IV on smartphones is the added party chat that the DS should have had. But it still has the same shitty dialects and bad controls. So it's bad in any version.
You have a thing for seemingly bitchy wives who are actually massive softies underneath it all.
The other two have personality. One is just the typical demure, perfect girl and the other is a Tomboy with a soft side. Deborah is just a Tsun with a soft side.
The personalty for Bianca also got really ruined in the English translation because of the dialect crap. They tried to give her the same dialect as Yangus. But it doesn't work correctly when reading text. If we got a non butchered version, she'd be a lot more popular. She's the most popular DQ character in Japan by far.
>She's the most popular DQ character in Japan by far.
Figures, Japan never has good taste.
>I'm just going to ignore all that stuff you said to keep by blind hate going
I saw that same post, don't worry user, I've never heard of it happening.
For good reason, Bianca is by far the best wife
Nah it's not her accent it's the constant references to ghostbustin'
Maybe it's just an issue with the DS version in general though rather than the translation (original SNES version didn't have party chat and I played that first so I didn't see any problem with Bianca there)
She only referenced it once with me and that was by the haunted castle.
I'm only like 8 hours in to the DS version so it's possible people are just overreacting
So far the accents are waaaaaaaay better than DQIV's, to the point where I actually enjoy them
I actually liked 4 better at first but 5 is far better by the end. 5 grows on you heavily after a certain event.
Reminder that DQ12 will be the last game in the series.
She only mentions it like two times. And using your logic, then you could say Deborah gets annoying because she has her own shtick she repeats endlessly until the end of the game.
Why? Cause Sugiyama dying?
>So far the accents are waaaaaaaay better than DQIV's, to the point where I actually enjoy them
Don't worry, you'll get to Hay and some other places soon.
Said no one.
Yes. and Akira Toriyama is too old and hands off already and Yuji Horii isnt gonna survive long enough to fully direct a DQ13.
You know they’ll keep it going, FF is still going without Sakaguchi and Uematsu
yeah but no one has given a shit about any ff past 9, and rightly so
imagine the rape dragon quest is going to go through. at least there won't be as many people raging at Squeenix because the series is niche as fuck.
I didn't think you had DQ girls
What's a good version of DQIII to play?
In the west, Japan will riot over it. Also FFX sold well and XIV is pretty popular
Is that the one where your wife gets raped by a horse?
GBC, mobile is missing many extras
...
Well now know you know user.
>Akira Toriyama is too old and hands off already
Which hasn't ended the series.
>and Yuji Horii isnt gonna survive long enough to fully direct a DQ13.
[citation needed]
This is a dude who has chain smoked for 40 years and still does more work than the entire Square division combined. There's no sign of him slowing down. And you're just trying to sound cool for predicting the end to something.
>Which hasn't ended the series.
Toriyama is the soul of the series though.
>This is a dude who has chain smoked for 40 years and still does more work than the entire Square division combined. There's no sign of him slowing down. And you're just trying to sound cool for predicting the end to something.
Wrong. Yuji Horii himself already said he's already mostly hands off and has a team of directors that he "trusts"
>That said, as his role has become more custodial over the years, he’s managed to amass a team of directors and producers who he trusts to manage the ship in his absence
Much obliged. I'm going to show it to someone and I figured it's a great representative. That or V.
Post Yoshihiko
3,4,5,8, and 11 are the highlights of the series
I saw gameplay of 11 and it seemed rather basic for a franchise that's gone on for so long. Which isn't necessarily wrong. Don't fix what ain't broke. But I can kind of appreciate how FF seems more experimental.
In a sense it’s good how it’s stayed true and didn’t follow trends, just focusing on gameplay. That’s why it’s so liked.
DQ6 Please, it's EPIC, you should play it after 5 because of *spoiler*
>Toriyama is the soul of the series though.
Yuji Horii is you dunce.
>Wrong. Yuji Horii himself already said he's already mostly hands off and has a team of directors that he "trusts"
Horii has never been the main "director" on any DQ game. He's always been the creative supervisor. However, he handles game development very differently than any other game designer. He writes the story and pages of design notes. Then gives all his ideas to designers who go off and flesh out his ideas. Then they bring all of it back to him and he checks everything, right down to the sound effects and character models, telling them to make adjustments as needed. After this process is finalized, the programmers impliment it into the games and Horii playtests the game hundreds of times to make sure everything is consistent. This is why the games take years to release. Not because their so big, but because Horii won't let a game release without testing everything. And there's dozens of others who playtest it as well. Sugiyama (the composer) is one of the dedicated playtesters. Though that might change soon given his age.
tl;dr Yuji Horii has the final say on every little thing in every DQ game. Even the spin offs.
Definitely. Main game release days are a national holiday in Japan. I almost want to say it's very much for casuals. And they know better than to upset casuals by changing things too much.
The problem is, Final Fantasy's system of reinventing the wheel every game means most fans end up hating half or more of the FF games. Dragon Quest is like Mario where you always know what you're going to get, a variation on the basic formula. But if you like that formula, you'll like most or all of the games.
Dragon Quest still adds new things to every game, even if it keeps the base elements.
>he thinks a Dragon Quest game without Toriyama art would even be Dragon Quest
They're a pretty core trio but Toriyama and Sugiyama are evidently the most important ones in setting the series apart from everything else. That isn't to say that Yuji Horii isn't core and fundamental, but a lot of his influence is under the hood.
>Main game release days are a national holiday in Japan.
Why do people keep repeating all the same falsehoods in every DQ thread?
FF only started being experimental when the original creators quit.
Who will the DQ ownership rights revert to after all 3 die? I wonder if they'll pass it on to their children (who'll inevitably sell it off), give it to square enix or try to sneak in a clause that says no one can work on the franchise after they're gone.
As was already pointed out, Toriyama isn't even doing a lot of the design work for Dragon Quest anymore. He hasn't for decades. His assistants have. Which is why so much from DQIX and on seems like a totally different style.
If Toriyama died, there's a whole group of assistants who can take over for him.
When it comes to Sugiyama, he might be harder to replace. But Sugiyama's music itself has changed a lot in recent years. His stuff in DQIX-XI doesn't sound anything like his old music. So the consistency is already gone. And even then, someone like Mitsuda or Hamauzu have proven they can write that kind of Baroque/Romantic/Bossa Nova inspired music.
Character designs are much easier to copy than you may think. I doubt he actually draw anything anymore and no one is going stop making games if he dies.
Toriyama still does all the monster designs, he just doesn't do character art anymore.
I really wish Horii could block any production of future DQ games after he dies. But I doubt SquareEnix would honor such a thing. They'd find some loophole to override it. If such a clause could be legally binding at all.
Uh...what? It was experimental since FF2.
>Toriyama still does all the monster designs
The ones that hasn't changed since first of whatever game?
that image gives me anxiety
He does both. Just select ones, not all of them.
I’m wondering if they’ll replace Sugiyama eventually due to age and his historical revisionism
Sugiyama’s work is good, but why do people think he’s better than Uematsu, or even Kondo?
>I’m wondering if they’ll replace Sugiyama eventually due to age
They'll keep him until he chooses to step down or dies. Just look at the music in DQX and XI, which aren't as good as his past work. But they kept it anyway.
>and his historical revisionism
They didn't for 30 years. He didn't start magically doing this recently. He's from an entire generation who has those feelings. He's been saying it since the 1950s.
Please play Banjo, zoomers are starting to realize they have been shilling for nothing.
Uematsu himself calls Sugiyama "the master." And took major influence from him. I actually think Uematsu is better at drawing out the best elements of MIDI music. But when it comes to orchestrated music, he's not that great. Not only is Sugiyama better, but so is pretty much any other composer who's worked on Final Fantasy.
Sugiyama also arranged a lot of the orchestrated versions of FF music for the early concerts.
I only like Sugiyama a little more because I prefer DQ games.
Out of being traditional Japanese humbleness I think is why.
Kondo does atmosphere better than either one desu.
cope
Have sex, dilate, oof
It's so surprising to me everyone seems to dislike DQ6, I randomly decided to play the DS version a couple of years back as my first DQ and even though I didn't finish it I still had a lot of fun with it
> V
>even though I didn't finish it
that's the thing
after Murdraw it falls off hard in terms on quality and the grandma just says the same "go find your real self lmao" no matter what you have done, so you're pretty much lost with 2 worlds to explore and no hints to go with
Disappointed this wasnt in DQXI. Absolute best track Sugiyama ever composed.
>finally get around to beating 4
>decide to pick up 5
>its fucking 60 dollars on the ds
i guess were playing the snes version
It's a solid game I would call decent. The problem is, being decent in a series where every other game is great to amazing means you're the weak one out. The biggest problem is that the characters don't get much development. I don't feel anything for the characters I'm adventuring with, except Barbara/Ashlynn at the very end of the game. Playing a 50 hour game just to get one small feel at the end is kind of weak, when I can play a game like DQVII or VIII and have dozens of feels over 20 character arcs, some of which repeat two or three times.
Just pirate it, it doesn’t use the stylus at all
Or they just pirated the DS or mobile version. Also the mobile version is just a port of the DS version so it's completely fine to play. It just has forced portrait mode and touchscreen controls. The DQ mobile ports are actually pretty damn good for the most part.
At least it isn’t 2. Now that was shit.
Just emulate it on a flashcard. Or play the mobile port I suppose.
Nah, if Hori said no more DQ games then Square would probably oblige. Just look at Sazae-san, one of the most popular animes ever. It's creator never wanted the cartoon to have merchandise including videos and that's STILL being honored. Hori's big enough of a deal they'd have to honor it if he wanted it that way.
>DQ 1+2 on SNES with translation
>Best
Nah. They are extremely buggy and 2 is unplayable.
It's an exaggeration and a joke. It's just a way to say people really really like it and sometimes take days off just to wait in line.
this
based, DQ 8 is the best of them all
>mfw I just stopped by a used game store and picked it up for 25ish bucks
The only drawback is no case.
>I heard DQ2 is buggy and sucks, am I cool yet
I've played it three times on an emulator and saw both the "bugs." Neither is game breaking. If you get a duplicate Cannock, it does nothing. If you glitch in the city where the hero faints, you just reset and its fixed.
Your commonly repeated rumors are wrong, like most DQ rumors.
It’s not that it’s buggy, it’s that it has horrible pacing past the boat, road to rhone is obnoxious, and the final boss can full heal at any time, along with one party member being worthless.
watch the movie when it comes out
Play Dragon Quest 10
They had me at Takeru Satoh
6 was my first and I loved it. Playing 7 now and this shit just goes nowhere. I recommend 6 fuck the haters
8 and 11 are the best ones youve got left. I slightly prefer 11, but it really just comes down to whichever you played first honestly
its the girl right? ive been playing it on android and shes just dead fucking weight so far
>it’s that it has horrible pacing past the boat
That is a legitimate flaw. But one that isn't so horrible that the game should be avoided. I'd still play DQ2 over any of the Famicom FF games, which had much worse progression.
>road to rhone is obnoxious
It makes you level more, yes. But the super famicom remake gives you faster EXP and a healing spot.
>and the final boss can full heal at any time,
This isn't the only boss in DQ that can do this. Zoma in III as well as many mid bosses like Murdaw can as well.
>along with one party member being worthless
He's pretty bad, but late game he gets enough HP to survive. And his magic is what makes him decent. He's a glass cannon. Something DQ doesn't do very often.
My main gripe with Sugiyama is that he can't write a good boss battle track to save his life. The only decent ones are Estark's boss theme from 4, 5 and 7's regular boss theme, and 8's final boss. Hardly anything sounds like it's trying to be intense or like you're fighting something dangerous and they drag hard on slow sections.
Keep leveling her. Around level 8-10, she surpasses Cannock in HP and ATK. It's Cannock who sucks. You need to give him all your seeds to bring him up to par with the other two.
I loved it myself and only played 9 prior, never understood the issues with getting lost. But even with all my nostalgia I can see where this complaint comes from, I remember only caring about Ashylnn throughout most the game.
Sugiyama is basically a one trick pony, but he does said trick extremely fucking well. Uematsu, Kondo, Shimomura, Koshiro and Hamauzu have much greater musical range, though.
Heavenly Flight never fails to mesmerize me.
More pics like these please
Not really. He writes music for multiple genres. Which is the standard for almost all artists. They focus on 3-10 things and refine them. But what Sugiyama can do that most other composers won't or can't is write music that sounds like it actually fits in the Baroque period. I really wonder why he stopped doing that after DQVII. I'm not complaining because I prefer the Romantic period and he focuses mostly on Romantic/Contemporary now. But he should play to what other composers aren't doing. Everyone is doing romantic/contemporary now, in large part because he set that standard.
Sugiyama is the most classicaly trained, I believe, and it shows. When you stack it up against the others more orchestral songs Sugi just has more of a mastery of that kind of composition. Uematsu is more rock oriented , and can can sometimes be kind of a mess, especially some of his older stuff. He has more range though.
I bought it for $40 recently
11 is really good honestly. I liked it a lot and platinumed the game. I think if you enjoy any DQ you'll like it.
DQ1 can EASILY be beaten in 4 hours on your first run.
Yea Forums loves to push this meme but they work just fine.
>like 7 years ago
>V is going for like 50$ new on amazon
>go to Toys R Us
>a large amount of copies for only 15$ each
>buy them, sell on amazon
>repeat
I made so much money for a while there
I'm a pirate. Can i play DQ4 in my un-rooted phone? I was going to tray the DS version but i heard it doesn't have party chat.
Just play 8 and try to get your hands on the PS2 version. Better graphics, orchestrated soundtrack, gameplay is more balanced than the 3ds version, and in the 3ds version they ruin one of the characters with it's extra content (his name starts with an m). However either version, best game in the series.
Just finished VIII
Post game content worth it to marry the horse instead of elope with her?
just find an apk file. Assuming Android, you can install without root.
Honestly, Dragon Quest music is mostly mediocre with a couple of good songs and a handful of terrible songs. I've only played 1-5, original, but please tell me how any of these songs were considered acceptable?
youtube.com

Shhh, you'll provoke fanboys.
Sugi excels with overworld themes most I think. Well personally.
Admittedly battle themes were never his strong point
I haven't had any problems with the battle themes, I really liked 5's in particular. But dear god the final boss themes, expect for Zoma, have been pretty bad.
There isn't anything wrong with the composition of any of those songs, just the instruments.
youtube.com
>DQ1 can EASILY be beaten in 4 hours on your first run.
Not unless you pick the perfect name and know where all the items are.
DQVIII has one of the best post games in gaming.
The SNES version is the best one
youtube.com
>someone let the britbongs be in charge of marketing again
>listening to the MIDI versions
There's your problem. Sugiyama composes things for Orchestra, then someone else "dumbs them down" to MIDI. You're basically not listening to the actual songs. The actual music is the symphonic versions. Which obviously the NES can't play orchestrated music.
>Not unless you pick the perfect name and know where all the items are.
Nope. I beat the game in 5 hours and my first try. And then I sat my friend down and had him play it last week and he also took 5 hours.
We could have easily got it done in 4 if we werent autistically grinding the whole way through
What's the problem here?
rescue the princess next time, you faggot
Toyotaro will replace him.
I did, and so did my friend. Thats a thing you can skip? Why are you acting like its a hard or time consuming thing?
It sounds like you used a guide to find the items or played some kind of sped up version of the game. Otherwise, I'm calling bullshit.
>Akira Toriyama is too old
You make it sound like he's as old as Sugiyama. He's the youngest of the main three, 20 years below Sugiyama and about 5 below Horii.
We both used turbo where it could be used to good effect obviously, but why would you play the whole game unsped up? I love the game but the walking speed is way too low.
Deborah is my wife
DQIV. Part of the same trilogy and available on all the same consoles as DQV. Get it on DS.
DQVIII is also a good game to go to, and it was the most popular Western game.
You do realize DQV topped DS charts on Amazon and DQIV was nowhere to be seen on those charts, right?
Then you can't claim the average playtime matches yours, dumbass.
>I played Chrono Cross with New Game + and sped up all the scenes and beat it in half the normal time! That means anyone should be able to beat it that fast on their first playthrough.
The grinding isn't worth it, especially if your playing it on a 3DS, since NDS games can quit on a hair trigger with that system and the game as no autosaving.
The majority of people playing DQ1-2 in this day and age would be doing so would be on an emulator
The proper way to play Chrono Cross into not do so at all because Cross sucks shit.
>The majority of people playing DQ1-2 in this day and age would be doing so would be on an emulator
But the majority wouldn't play at hyper speed because having severe ADD is just not the norm. Factoring in a massive speedup into your estimate is the absolute dumbest thing, holy shit stop being so dumb.
>sold my 3DS
>decide to finally try out DQ a while after
>find out the best starting points are III, V and VIII
>want a physical release that I can play portably
>nothing for my Vita
>have to dig out my DS Lite from like 2007
>check Amazon
>DQV for $60
>don't give a shit because I'm currently a 5th year student who pays no rent and has low insurance
>get One Day Delivery as well and decide to get a JoJo's volume with it
>know I can easily make that money back in half a shift at my job
>going to be getting my vacation pay in a week and I'll be spending it on a Switch and DQB2 (ended up playing DQB1 on my Vita)
You fags need to get a job
Also got DQM Joker because my local Indian was selling it
>hyper speed
Using speed up just makes the walk into what would be a run in the later games, stop exaggerating. I don't know a SINGLE person that has played 1/2 without speed up.
just dropping by to ask what DQ was it where you got sent to the shadow realm with your wife and kids?
And you just left out that little detail about you speeding up the game out of your initial humblebrag by mistake, certainly not because you wanted to look like a god gamer in front of your anonymous peers?
No because fucking NO ONE will play this game without turbo.
It's been YEARS already
Why hasn't the party chat been ripped from the iphone version of IV and patched into an actually playable version?
Lazieness
Just play DQIV on PSX
I've played 1 & 2 on an actual NES, no cheating.
1 took me like 10 - 15 hours without a walkthrough; pretty boring game, kinda cute.
2 was absolute hell. It's probably the same length as 1, but I had to use a walkthrough to get through this game. Even then this game probably took me 20-25 hours, 8 in Rhone alone.
Play XI
Get over yourself, not everyone has your exact flaws. Most people play games at the speed they are supposed to run at. It only seems super slow to you because you're used to speeding shit up. You and your ADD friends are the minority here.
Soon.
>the full game is switch exclusive
its not even fair why is this even allowed?
>Most people play games at the speed they are supposed to run at
>Most
I've never ran into a single one
And would you recommend anyone play DQ2 at the proper speed without any sort of turbo?
They were planning on a switch version for awhile and want people to buy it.
Nah DQ1 is alright. DQ2 is fucking trash tho.
I'm gonna probably buy it for her
not you, cum dumpster
>I don't know a SINGLE person that has played 1/2 without speed up.
Probably because you're telling them to all play it sped up. Meanwhile, millions of other people played it back on actual systems or before there was speed options on emulators. Or because they don't feel the need to speed it up. Because the game isn't that long and playing it is the point.
Most people who play games sped up recognize that a game's length is not defined by how fast you can beat it in an emulator running at 4x speed, and do not believe that the universe revolves around them.
Me. I played them via emulation on a Wii
Based
The Switch is getting the game two years late. Horii wanted to give people who waited a reason to buy it, plus others who already bought it a reason to buy it again (like me). And damn, all those UI and quality improvements sound amazing.
>Meanwhile, millions of other people played it back on actual systems or before there was speed options on emulators
The whole crux of my argument from the start is that people playing it NOW on emulators would.
I want to cum on Serena's 5head
Fanartists can never get her breasts right.
There's is plenty of people who can replicate Toriyamas art perfectly. There is even some that do it better. Horii is only 65. Sugiyama is pretty bad now anyway, who cares.
Imagine if Sugiyama die and we get Sakuraba as replacement
Hard mode: it's ps2 era sakuraba
Same.
For 2 in particular, speed up really helps. The other nes games don't really need it. Don't go overboard with it though, otherwise you'll end-up as one of those fags that plays Pokemon on an emulator at %64000 speed.
Im only talking about turbo to the point that the walk turns into a run.
Also why would you play it on NES when the SNES version exists.
Yeah well, I've never ran into a single adult who's played Dragon Quest 1 & 2 ar all, clearly they exist all the bloody same. It's hardly surprising that your circle of friends have the same disabilities as you. And you've had at least 3 seperate posters reply to you who are telling you that they played it right yet you persist in your delusion that your way is the normal way.
Can't be picky when you're looking for short-haired Serena art
None of those people played it on an emulator on pc.
>game has fashion slots now
Yeah, now I can run around as The DQVIII hero the entire game!
I've actually never had a problem with the walking speeds in the NES games, but if you do than that's fine. The points I'd recommend turbo for is navigating the overworld since your forced to boat everywhere in 2 and speeding through grinding.
I'm playing the original versions because I want to see how the series evolved, plus I don't mind nes rpgs that much. That said, I had no idea how much of a pain 2 was going to be and I regret not playing it on an emulator.
I tried getting 5 to work on my hacked 3DS, but I kept getting hit with antipiracy shit.
Perhaps it's a sign you should buy the fucking game.
While I do love V the best. XI is the best current turn based JRPG I've played in a while. It has almost no contest for me.
Nothing will match the great balance it has between presentation, graphics, gameplay, and fun this game has.
Out of all the DQ games I've played its V > XI > IX > 4, I should try 8 soon.
1 and 3 are both great. 1 is so simple that its almost relaxing to play, and its quite short.
I like 2 but its mostly a nostalgia thing, the game is quite long and tedious.
Is the Switch version going to have the non-shit soundtrack? This is important.
It not only has the orchestrated version of the DQXI music, but an option to switch to the orchestrated music from Dragon Quest VIII as well. Along with some other Dragon Quest VIII costumes and items.
They really are trying to appeal to the western fans for once.
It has the orchestra OST in addition to switching with the sound track from VIII.
I did years ago faggot, it ended up getting lost when I moved.
Because you can just play the android version. Hackers won't bother with something that already has a "fix" sadly. There was something in the works, but that's been dead for a while and I doubt we will ever get a Party Chat hack.
Did the composer die or something? Why would he agree to that? He got completely assblasted about it being orchestrated in VIII.
Good news for me I guess.
>Just play DQIV on PSX
If I could speak japanese this whole thing wouldn't be a problem in the first place dumbass.
Am I the odd one? I really like the music in DQ11. It does sound "generic" but that's the charm. It's been a while since I've had a simple soundtrack where the adventure feels epic.
This is the thought process that results in no English Party Chat for the DS version.
I just learned to live without it honestly.
There's no variety, about like 4 themes you hear in the game and they are just eh
>go from mediocre soundtrack to shit soundtrack
Sounds great.
>He believes the resetera rumors about Sugiyama when it's been debunked in every DQ thread
Sugiyama never blocked the music. SquareEnix were just too cheap to pay for the rights. They finally paid up for the Switch version, seeing the huge backlash from the western fans.
>This is the thought process that results in no English Party Chat for the DS version.
What?
>He got completely assblasted about it being orchestrated in VIII.
[citation needed]
>Sugiyama never blocked the music.
Why are you lying?
People not learning Japanese being the thought process
I love sage butt
DQ8 costumes are in all the versions though, and you can just use the mod to fix the music in the PC version. The real thing the switch version has on the others is that it has the 3ds only content in it.
4 is obviously the best game, but since you already played it I say 8 next, then either back to 7 or on to 11. 9 is ok but unless you played it first I don't really recommend it.
>wanna play the PS2 version of DQV
>but no Debora
Fuck
>people not learning japanese is why we won't have a english party chat in the ds version
This makes no sense. Are you retarded or something?
I wanna dump all my cum in Martina
It's simple really. If people learned Nipponese, at some point a guy who's good at modding and with the free time to do it would do it.
Would probably be a 1 in 10 million chance, but it could happen.
PS2 version has worse dungeon layouts for some reason, you're not missing much
The musical choices are odd because the entire soundtrack is super fucking huge but a ton of songs are only used once or twice in a 100 hour game.
Dude, the party chat script is already translated in the mobile version. Iirc the DS version has an almost fully translated party chat as well, but it was dummied out for some reason. The problem is that adding it back in is tricky. Unless you are implying that someone would just translate the japanese DS version, which wouldn't ever happen regardless, because in hackers and fantranslators minds, there is no reason to do this because the mobile version exists.
7 being long is a meme. It's as long as any other dragon quest game, which is only long if you do all the autistic side content.
Also I seriously hope you didn't play the ds port of v
How about you provide a source that he did? Because no one who ever brought this rumor up ever has. The burden of proof is one the one making the claim.
What's the best version of V? Super Famicom, PS2 or DS?
>The real thing the switch version has on the others is that it has the 3ds only content in it.
And about 40 other things.
The 3D look isn't great and it makes the game way slower. Only benefit is the orchestrated music.
Sugiyama owns the rights to the music you dipshit.
DS by far.
and yet, square is the company that refused to pay him for his work, hmm weird it's almost like they're greedy assholes who thought noone would notice
>In 2007, the United States House of Representatives passed House Resolution 121, seeking an official apology from the Government of Japan regarding so-called "comfort women", women who were used as sexual slaves by Japanese soldiers during World War II. Sugiyama was opposed to this resolution, stating that he believed the evidence surrounding the Nanking Massacre and comfort women was selective in nature.
lmao
DQVII is the longest DQ game, unless you count the 700 hours of grotto grinding in IX. DQVII is about 120 hours, not counting the post game stuff and assuming you can find all the shards without getting lost. Most DQ games average around 60 hours without counting the post game.
You are underselling it

Post a source that they refused to pay him, since you're the one making that claim.
Based
...which is why SquareEnix has to pay him to use it. That's how rights work. Sugiyama prefers the orchestrated version of his music gets used. But SquareEnix demands they use a synth version when the original game is released. And then sometimes uses orchestrated music on ports/remakes. And even then, only when they feel like playing for it. For example, they blocked the orchestrated music in the 3DS games. Not Sugiyama, but the cheap asses in SquareEnix.
Sure feels like resetera in here!
>Sugiyama prefers the orchestrated version of his music gets used.
lmao, outside of Japan? That is horseshit.
Post a source of SE refusing to pay him or fuck off, you niggers are completely full of shit.
Sure feels like dumb retard in here!
You haven't posted any source to back up yours, so no dice. We don't have to post a source when the very fact that multiple games have the orchestrated music prove Sugiyama isn't blocking it. You're claiming he is, despite this evidence.
Oh god no wonder these games sell so poorly
>You haven't posted any source to back up yours, so no dice.
Right back at you kiddo.
The Switch version getting it proves jack shit about Sugiyama, he's hopefully fucking dying soon and we can get better music after that without him trying to be a gook jew.
Sugiyama doesn't sell his Symphonic music in the west. One of the big reasons you idiots give for him "blocking" the music (which you strill haven't provided a single source for) is that he wants to sell CDs. But he only sells them in Japan. But then he released various games with the orchestrated music in Japan...which makes no sense by your (still unproven) logic. Then some of these games, like Dragon Quest VII and VIII on 3DS, didn't get orchestrated music in the west. A region where he isn't selling his music. Wow, odd that.
And then Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 did get the orchestrated music. And Dragon Quest XI is now also getting it. So what's more likely? Sugiyama just randomly decides to hate the west and block certain games from getting orchestrated music... or that SquareEnix doesn't want to pay a second time for the rights to use the orchestrated music? Hmm, that is a head scratcher for someone of your intellect, I'm sure.
>The Switch version getting it proves jack shit about Sugiyama
>HE'S TOTALLY BLOCKING IT!
>except for these certain games...but trust me! He's totally racist and hates the west with all the other games!
Okay, Resertera. I trust you.
She mentions it at least three times before you even marry her.
>But he only sells them in Japan.
Because baka gaijins don't deserve them.
And way to undermine your own point, he's doing it to sell fucking CDs.
Oh yeah VIII on the 3DS totally had an orchestrated soundtrack. VII on the 3DS totally had an orchestrated soundtrack (OH WAIT LOL IT DID BUT ONLY IN JAPAN SORRY GAIJINS)
Eat shit you retard. You're posting a girl from a game where the soundtrack was MIDI everywhere outside of moonland. Go back to retardera, you're clearly obsessed about it.
>says the opposite of the very posts he's citing as if no one will notice
Yup, you're from resetera alright.
>blown out so hard you have to be a dumb nigger
Yup, you're from retardera alright
Answer my questions, dumb fuck: Did DQVII or VIII on 3DS have MIDI? Did they have MIDI in all releases?
>Answer my questions, dumb fuck: Did DQVII or VIII on 3DS have MIDI? Did they have MIDI in all releases?
I already answered it at , dumb fuck. Dragon Quest VII and VIII on 3DS got orcestrated music in Japan, a region where he does sell his CDs. Then SquareEnix (not Sugiyama) made the brilliant decision to release them in the west without this feature. Despite Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 already having the orchestrated music. Proving that 1) Sugiyama isn't blocking orchestrated music on his games in any region and 2) SquareEnix are the ones arbitrarily giving orchestrated music to some regions and not to others.
>in before you say the opposite on literally every point in desperation to salvage your failed argument
>Then SquareEnix (not Sugiyama) made the brilliant decision to release them in the west without this feature.
Citation needed, retard. Or even better, fuck off back to retardera.
Right after you provide a source showing Sugiyama is blocking the music. Which after this entire argument, you still have yet to do.
>Right after you provide a source showing Sugiyama is blocking the music.
Sure, right after you provide a source showing SE was refusing to pay him. Which after this entire argument, you still have yet to do.
>love Dragon Quest girls
>love big tits
>love Jessica and most of the others
>Martina/Jade just doesn't do anything for me
My dick is confused.
This whole argument started because you made blanket generalizations that he was blocking the music and then people asked you to prove it. And since you're being such a petty loser who keeps going "no u" I'm going to do the same back to you.
You made the claims, you back them up. A legitamitely have an article that talks about how the localization team made the decision not to release the orchestrated music for DQVII on 3DS because of, in their words, "consistency issues." However, I won't post it until you back up your claims first.
That's not a source, retard. If you could have proven me wrong you would have, but you can't.
Strange, for me just looking at Jade makes me want to mating press her all day
This entire thread has turned to shit.
III is objectively the best DQ though.
All it takes is two idiots that don't know how to just walk away from a useless argument to destroy a perfectly good thread
>bruh I walked through this minefield and I didn't get blown up! Just trust me, it's cool.
I legitimately don't get where or why these retards flood these threads and insist on trying to drive fans down a path that will cause them to drop the game, or worse, drop the series. I've personally had 2 perma-lock me out of the ending twice and 1 would freeze and crash every so often.
Please, please, please, do not play or recommend SNES 1&2. If you ABSOLUTELY have to, make save states every 2-5 hours and a separate slot and back that shit up somewhere.
>you just don't have a source because you won't post one!
It's great when every comeback you try to make can be thrown right back at you.
Hey I won the argument so I'm totally chill.
>When retards take the waifu joke too far
Bianca a shit. Also, you're a retarded ESL, because Bianca's accent was Southern/Hillbilly. Yangus is Cockney. MASSIVE difference.
>KEK GTOY AA*KO
This is the future for DQ threads, because it's not niche anymore. The contrarians and trolls are aware of its existence. And they're pissed as hell it's getting a character in Smash. So from now on, they're going to show up in every thread.
crikey.
>you can just play the android version
Gross.
As someone who has the DS version, the android version is better.
I bought DQ VIII when it went on sale a few weeks ago. Haven't touched it, but I'll get right to it once my vacation trip begins next week. Say if I were to love this series, what other DQ games should I pick up?
I agree, I was just saying that's why hackers won't bother with the party chat hack.
Haven't play 4 yet, but the control is already enough to make me want to kill myself
5(DS) and 8(PS2) are the best.
III, V and XI are all safe bets.
>he doesn't have OG super saiyan children
t. Zsnes user
so we agree that casters are trash, and should only be used for certain bosses?
why can't DQ into useful casters?
>inb4 gay people dancing
>m
I married the better girl instead, so now my children look like me.
Veronica is crazy strong.
Nah, oldfag here, it's really just the small pool sample of Dragon Quest fans here that continually shit up the threads. There's basically 3 posters that I can recognize by their arguments alone.
>Dialect-kun
Thinks ALL of the accents in Dragon Quest literally ruin the translation and intent, even the dialects and accents outside of the really egregious examples of 4 chapter 1. Thinks that it's a betrayal of Yuji Horii, and if you watch someone argue with him, he'll eventually start going around in circles and accusing opponents of deflecting points that were clearly and cleanly answered.
>PS2-fag
Thinks that PS2 version of 5 is God's gift to man and will fight people violently about Deborah being shit and "against the creator's intention".
>Simple-guide user
I think its this guy here: He's the only one I ever see posting that version of the guide and like 1/5 or so times I see it, it starts an argument.
There's a handful of others, but I think these three shit up the threads the most.
Bianca's accent is all over the place and inconsistent. One moment she speaks with no accent, the next she's speaking like Yangus, the next she's speaking like the 'icks in 'ay. The localization team just used Dragon Quest as a test subject for crazy shit no other game would let them do. Based on "feelings" of what would be funny or unique.
Just finished the first two games (going to start DQ III), what the fuck happened in DQ II? it was so inferior to DQ I
That's boring
Just a friendly reminder: if you don't marry Bianca, you're an asshole.
It’s definitely not a meme and the final act starts to overstay it’s welcome. I just played through it last year.
She's objectively the most interesting wife though.
Learn how to use magic effectively. Hint: Spamming the highest MP cost spell is not always the best. Doing consistent damage or group damage is better than single target damage most often. Conserve your magic to use on enemies with high defense or bosses.
Friendly reminder that if the game feels that it has to guilt trip you into picking a girl then she's shit.
>Bianca's accent is all over the place and inconsistent.
Not really. It's fine if you don't like it, but you should at least learn what the accent sounds like first before commenting. Also what the fuck was the point of the article here?
>marry Bianca
>Deb ends up forever alone
>marry blue haired bitch
>Deb is forever alone
>marry Deb
>Bianca's father stays alive
>blue haired bitch has a pussy suitor
Its obvious what choice is best
not him but the snes version is shit.
the only things dq1 have going for it are that it's well-balanced and it forces you to utilize all the tools at your disposal (which are few, but it's something). the remake nicely lessens the initial grind, but simply exploring after that makes you over-leveled so there's no reason to do anything but attack and heal. heal being cheaper fucks up the balance of spell costs (not that it matters now outside of low-level runs, but still), enemy ai is changed for the worse (some go full retard and heal at full health, others never attempt to use magic when stopspelled so the ones you'd need to use it on will outdamage your healing), and several enemies' abilities are switched for the worse (red dragons were kind of a bitch before but at least they weren't just a pointless level-check). it's a complete waste gameplay-wise, and it still doesn't have plot or characterization to at least have fluff to fall back on.
i can see why charts like exist, telling people to play the snes version, because the nes version is a slog. but the snes version goes overboard trying to remedy that and fucks up the entire game. and frankly, since dq1 was basic even for its time (ultima 4 was already out), the only reasons to bother with it are a curiosity of how the series started or a deep affinity for really oldschool rpgs. either way, you're better off playing the original version.
Maybe she should get out from her room then
Advice many on Yea Forums could follow
Debora is just much more funny and hotter
I've only played the original games 1 through 5. 1-4 Enix translation and 5 DeJap translation. I'd play 6, but there's no complete fan translation, so I'll go to 8 next. The accents scare me. How bad are they in 8?
Not him but i just finished 5 and it felt like offensive magic was pretty much worthless, and just used it defensively
>only one guy dislikes the dialects
This thread proves that wrong, with multiple people calling them out. The dialects are very divisive in the fanbase. Some people love them, some people hate them. And it's like that on Dragon's Den, SquareEnix main blog and various other sites.
>only one guy obsesses over DQV on PS2
There's plenty of people who do this. There's also another guy who obsesses over the NES version of Dragon Quest IV being the only good one. Another guy who claims every game but DQIX sucks. And multiple people who obsess over DQV or VIII and hate the others. Turns out there's lots of different people with different opinions. We can't account for you only focusing on a few of them.
>only one guy posts DQ guides
There was a guy who was spamming a totally different guide for two weeks. And the guide posted in this thread didn't start any arguments. And how is the guy posting the guide in this thread starting arguments? He didn't say anything inflammatory. He's now responsible for the people who respond to him?
I don't remember it being too bad in 8 3ds.
>someone somewhere thought this was okay
Accents are one thing but your sentences shouldn't be fucking obstacle courses
Don't be like that, they both are shit.
4 is inferior to 5, played both. the mechanics like monster collecting in 5 make it so much more enjoyable
It wouldn't bug me so much in IV if the game didnt throw the worst shit at you right at the start. That whole first chapter is shit.
It's mostly limited to variations of British accents. And most of them get written normally, except Yangus and his friends get the apostrophe treatment. But if you're playing with voices on, you won't really care. Dialects just become a problem when you have to read them with no vocals.
>only one guy dislikes the dialects
No, I never said that, I said there is Dialect-Kun.
>We can't account for you only focusing on a few of them.
This particular guy stands out when I can spot him though. Most of those other opinions...I've never actually seen. I've never seen anyone say only 9 is good, and I've never seen NES 4 only guy. Are those /vg/ threads? I don't go to those cancers.
>And the guide posted in this thread didn't start any arguments
>1/5 times I see him, it starts an argument
Reading isn't your strong suit, is it? Are you actually one of the guys I mentioned above? You got really asshurt about my post now that I think about it. Are you simple-guide guy? Are you ACTUALLY starting an argument with me right now over your dumb guide? lol
Only DQI&II are horribly buggy on SNES, and III is relatively fine, right?
Is GBC the recommended version then for I&II?
How much am I missing by playing the DS version of IV without Party Chat? A fleched out party is important to me.
disruptive wave
> since NDS games can quit on a hair trigger with that system
>oh no, you just didn't understand me! There's exceptions to everything
>you just must be mad!
Yeah...the other people are the problem.
I wouldn't play Dragon Quest II on GBC because the screen size is so small. People complain about the ocean segments being bad in the NES and SNES versions, the GBC one is even worse.
Doesn't matter for Dragon Quest 1 though. Dragon Quest III on SNES is by far better.
>save the world
>only become head of guard
Trodain you cheap piece of shit
There's actual rules for writing accents and dialects in literature. People like Mark Twain and Shakespeare used them to great effect.
The Dragon Quest teams didn't use those rules. They just wrote out gibberish based on phonetic sounds. You'd have better luck playing the game through Google translate.
You literally didn't understand me and I just explained that? Can you point to specific sections in my post where you believe I said there was only one person who ever faults the dialects ever? Also you got reaaaally less wordy in your reply when I called you out for being simple-guide guy.
What's difficult about this?
Do you idiots just not know what Scottish sounds like?
Tur tae?
"that tower to the west"
For anyone who hasn't figured it yet:
>I'm wondering if that tower to the west has something to do with it all, but I don't have the first clue how to get inside.
The only reason why I can figure this out is because I played the Enix translation and have some context of what's going on in this scene.
The Scottish are subhuman.
Scottish people don't write words out like that. And the fact that you used the word "sound" to describe written text should clue you in on the problem.
What, am I retarded for not understanding that?
That's why you steal his daughter.
>that feel when I couldn't play anymore after realizing martina got GOBBED because the hero was a jobber
It hurts bro, why must she suffer the most in the game and never get a happy ending?
>scottish people don't write words out like that
Look at scottish twitter some time.
>the fact that you used the word "sound" to describe written text
Text describes sound, retard. Even now you are subvocally sounding out these words
Yes. If you can't hear the exaggerated "TOOerr" spittled at you by a rabid Scottsman then your English skills are sub-par by first world standards.
dinnae throw stones in glass houses
The biggest problem with 6 is just the core game design. The earlier DQs, 3 especially, are much more robust, and in a word, "honest" and consistent with its gameplay. Hell, even brutally difficult 2 lets you cast fizzle on the last boss who looks like a magician, and a shitton of the dragons are weak to death spells, and are the type of enemy you would want to cast death on.
6 shits the bed with Final Fantasy design, i.e. make all of the bosses past the 1/3rd mark of the game immune to a shitton of abilities for no reason other than you think they "might" become broken. I remember trying to use a warrior skill on some guy late game that just basically did piddling damage with little-to-no side-effect, and he just said "nah fuck you". On top of that, most of the bosses after the 1/2 mark just GET a turn-free Disrupting Wave if you trigger them by casting one too many buffs, meaning they dispel you AND still get their 2-3 attacks for that turn.
All of this combined means that there's only like 2-3 classes with any skills viable for end game that you're allowed to use, and the rest just plop shit tons of useless, actually useless skills into your menu, forcing you to scroll through dozens of pages to find shit you actually want.
This isn't even touching the bigger fact of the overworld just being anti-fun by throwing thousands of random battles at you the second you get the boat that you can't use Holy Water/Protection on.
tl;dr You can tell someone who worked on a Final Fantasy game did the playtesting on this one. Yes, I'm aware that Square was still separate at the time.
She's a virgin though, she was waiting for me to pop her in the switch version.
>he doesn't have the superior super saiyan blue children
I don't think you want to seal Malroth's spell, his most dangerous move is the inferno breath (though it might be useful for sealing his fullheal in original NES)
She still able to transform to corrupted version
>Text describes sound, retard.
Written language is far more complicated than just writing sounds. It has rules. Rules which this translation isn't following. Idiots on twitter spelling words phonetically isn't the standard for written language. But even their shit follows some standards they learned online. The shit in Dragon Quest IV just makes up their own words with no rhyme or reason.
>but you should be able to just HEAR it!
You're basically saying people who don't hear Scottish people talking on a regular basis are stupid. Which makes you stupid, because the vast majority of the world don't watch Scottish TV or have a friend who speaks in a thick Brogue. And even then, THE WAY THEY WRITE IT ISN'T EVEN FOLLOWING THE STANDARDS OF THE LANGUAGE! Either phonetic spelling or accurate dictation. It's fucking made up words. Eff eye starte riting evry sentance en English az eet sunds, yur goin two git anoyeed. Ets stuped two dew thees.
>in before he claims it's not annoying
Wait, I was talking about Hargon. Can you actually Fizzle Malroth too?
Third party here, he's right though. If English is your first language, you should be able to use the phonetic pronunciation, guided by those rules you speak of, to actually "hear" the words.
Also you can't inb4 an argument to make it less true, Neko_Knight. It's not that annoying and you're being a huge flaming queer about the whole thing.
>She still able to transform to corrupted version
That just makes the sex better
Underrated roast.
>Third party here
>posts that twitter example he was talking about
Right...
>If English is your first language, you should be able to use the phonetic pronunciation, guided by those rules you speak of, to actually "hear" the words.
No. Phonetic sounds are still based on familiarity. The only way people would get these sounds is if they have familiarity with the particular dialect. And again, they're not fucking following the rules of actual phonetic writing.
And since not everyone is a native English speaker, even in the US and UK, the translation fails for all of them. The whole purpose of a translation is to make someting understandable and easier to read for the target audience. If a huge percentage of them can't understand it, and of the smaller percentage who can a lot of them find it annoying, then the translation is a failure. This is why Dragon Quest IV is considered by many to be one of the worst translations ever. And why each DQ translation since has had to tone it down.
And even if you excuse all that, as I know you will, the translation team still admitted to removing party chat because of how much extra work all the dialects took. Which I'd like you to find some way to excuse that.
Nintendo is 4kids of video games.
>>posts that twitter example he was talking about
>Right...
I literally googled it, and this one. But I also knew what he was talking about because these spread like wildfire the day the first Sword & Shield trailers dropped. I miss when Pokémon threads were about fucking around with the brits.
>Phonetic sounds are still based on familiarity.
With the letters. And the rules of how the letters go together. That's literally how phonetics work. That's even how they work in the dictionary when they're trying to teach you how to pronounce a word. Dumbass.
>And since not everyone is a native English speaker, even in the US and UK, the translation fails for all of them.
Bwahahahahaha, like I give a fucking rat's ass? Play the shit versions your country got or fuck off.
>Which I'd like you to find some way to excuse that.
Cheap, parlor tactic to force me to agree with your point by trying to call out ahead of time how shitty it would be of me to not agree with it. Yawn.
The party chat in IV sucked anyways. Good riddance.
>Yea Forums loves to push this meme but they work just fine.
>game can randomly throw you from 2 to the overworld of 1
It just works.
>his historical revisionism
No one except resetrannies care about this.
>please tell me how any of these songs were considered acceptable?
>t. watched some eceleb shit on XI's OST and now thinks all the series' music is bad
There's literally nothing wrong with any of those, you zoomer pleb.
>phonetics is based on familiarity of the letters
What an idiot.
I'm one of the three I counted, and I spotted 2 more right after making the post. I did play that version of DQ2 emulated on PC as well as the NES version of DQ1 on both emulator and real hardware, I never had any desire to speed things up. You're being very retarded about this. So many people play the games on emulators without speeding things up, it is literally the default, normal way to play. Why are you trying to convince yourself that it's something everyone must do? It's a bizarre thing to think.
