It does fit in to the fact that they've clearly given up on them. The last starfox game was another in a long line of rehashes of 64, and was unremarkable. The last DK game was good, but there wasn't anything extra special or groundbreaking about it, and there is no evidence there will be another one.

You should learn about how the Disney Vault works. Basically, you don't spam your IPs, but instead rotate them. If done correctly, they'll last for decades because each time a new entry comes out, it's a new set of kids to play them for the first time. Yes, short term gains might be higher by burning an IP out, but a quick look at examples like Yokai Watch shows what happens. Nintendo is playing the long game. Thirty years from now there will be more entries in each of those IPs and you'll still be complaining that they're dead.
