I really enjoyed OpFor's use of NPC squads. I wish there was a bigger section in HL2 where you get to use the squad feature but its really dumbed down still.

I want to make a mod for HL2 where you mainly use NPCs to do your bidding

I think having be some unassuming guy was what made him an iconic protag, as every other one at the time had to be some mascot snowflake. Pretty amazing how he became so well known when you literally only see him in (some) menu's.
