What's the appeal of these games aside from tiddies? I have the 3DS games on my SD but just haven't gotten around to them.

The 3DS games have decent shonen stories and on top of that the games are largely competent (if not simple) mechanically with a moderate degree of challenge to boot. My biggest complaint (outside of the shitshow that is Estival, which is its own small essay) is that I wish Deep Crimson had the Versus block mechanic but otherwise the major entries hold steady in the 6-7/10 range as brawlers.

God, yes. Yumi is everything I want to play as in a game on an archetypal level but she's such a dull character that she's hard to like. Thank God for Ryouna, at least. I'll take the masochistic ice ballerina with guns.

Part of me hates that Renewal flopped because I'm playing it now and it's so much better than Shinovi or Estival.

No super armor, more combo strings, wall running needs an entire revamp to make it even remotely considerable, make Frantic like SK2 where you need to keep up kills and not get hit because your HP drains really quickly while in it, make the areas less linear and a bit more open, make parrying a bigger importance but not too important, bring back Shinobi Stones, balance everyone properly so you don't have an SV or EV situation where Haruka is still virtually unusable, Shiki barely does any damage, Mirai is close to unusable, and so on.

I think being able to carry bombs around as usable items and you can equip them before a level starts would also be a step in the right direction, that way you have several items you can spawn with to fight enemies with but only a limited amount.

That, along with making stages longer with maybe more objectives. Short stages worked fine for a portable game, but the format feels weak for a bigger console game.

Adopt Valkyrie Drive's aerial rave mixups and increase the aggression of the AI. Otherwise, Renewal just about has it right. It doesn't really need VD's witch time because there's already parries.

Because if you get chance to jump on cygames train, you do it.

I think Renewal does add air parries, which reminds me of something this series desperately needs to do - DROP THE GODDAMNED LEVELING SYSTEM. The yin/yang/flash growth mechanic is fine as it rewards the player for using different forms but all leveling does is give the player a free refresh in the middle of combat until you hit max level, where you're then so powerful that you don't even need it anymore. Just drop it altogether, it'll do wonders for the difficulty balance.

Personally I'm glad Renewal did flop. The tweaks combat wise over Estival make for a better overall game, but it reuses so much content from then 3DS version of Burst like CGs and voice acting from what I've read, and just feels underwhelming for what is meant to celebrate the franchise's 5th anniversary. Also locking new stories behind DLC sucks.

Yes and no. I would agree had the series maintained its early momentum but given the series' post-DC direction it's nice to see the series bounce back with its first decent game in some time, even if said game was a remake of an already decent game.

You read right, everything involving the VN bits is copypasted from the original, it's specially jarring with the beach CGs where they are wearing their original swimsuits, but then in game it's the ones introduced in SV.

SK2 is Senran Kagura 2, but it didn't do "Vita game released alongside anime" numbers and they stopped supporting Nintendo.

Even now all you have is the groping mode from the dressing room (using a cell phone vibrator Nintendo calls HD Rumble) and a pinball game which outside of removing the groping mode would be able to be released on PS4.

Shinovi Master really fell apart at the end there. I did like some of its ideas like punished Asuka and the notion of an antagonist spewing the narrative that yoma might not be so bad, but the way they went about it just wasn't right. I think it would've been better if Fubuki had just been a very convincing liar, at least there we have ninjas deceiving ninjas.

Really, I would like that the series start fresh and start focusing new ninja in general. New Wave introduced a bunch a cool new characters that are are lucky to even get a guest spot in a spin-off.

If you're not burned out on Versus style gameplay and/or haven't played Burst then it's worth a look. It is better than Shinovi or Estival, but not so much as to be absolutely essential for long term fans. However, it is an adequate way to experience the Burst narrative if you haven't already done so.

Its Burst but with Versus type gameplay, and several improvements over Estival's slower combat. If you like the idea of that go on ahead, but personally I'd wait for a deeper sale.

If you never played the original (which doesn't hold up nearly as much as its sequel, so I wouldn't bother) yeah, go ahead. Be ready to dish out for the DLC characters, though.

Given the history of SK "sales", I don't know if it'll get much deeper than that. I mean, don't the previous Versus games still retail for $30?

Starting with Estival is a beginner's trap because it makes a number of nonsense design choices to attempt to rebalance multiplayer of all things. It's actually a bit of a blight on the series not just for being the worst of the action games mechanically, not only for stalling the series with beach episode nonsense, but also being the first game in the series to end up on consoles which means future entries are highly likely to be based on its flawed engine, something we've already seen happen with Renewal despite an admirable, mostly effective effort to fix its fuckups.

But a mostly game filled with males after Takaki made games relying on female fanservice? Not to say it hasnt been done forever but I dont think hes the right guy anymore. Same for that other project hes working on

She got it bad by not being either the main character, the most popular, or one of the devs' favorites like Ryouna or Saki, same goes to other popular girls that aren't in.
Some people would also say she would be to similar to Yumi or something, but I can think of quite a few scenarios that would be unique to her. It's okay for a starting game, but Burst Re;Newal/OG Burst are better starting points. The game itself is good, though it does have a few annoyances like cut-ins every time you use a ninja art, you can't skip the strip scenes, and the clash thing where you have to mash buttons.

Other than that, it's a fairly solid with a parry system and fast-paced gameplay.

Burst Renewal is the first SK game I've been disappointed in. Before that, I was fine pre-ordering it back in December because I had some faith in Marvelous still. But man, I have to keep forcing myself to go back and play it. I'm only halfway through the 2nd school story and find myself looking for excuses to go do something else like wash dishes.

Here's some reasons I came up with for why it just didnt click for me
>Its feels like a shot for shot, or rather word for word remake, without much new added. What is new is DLC or just lore unlockables, interesting but not the most.
>Even if you haven't played the original in ages, it's hard to get invested in revisiting the same exact plotline that you mostly remember but is being sold off as a new game at a higher price tag.
>Versus-style combat just isn't that interesting.
>Some of the exact same stages are reused from Estival.

Well, it is a remake. I get the criticism but it's hard to hold it against a remake for reiterating the same narrative as the game it's a remake of faithfully.

I think it's the best take on it though with parries actually doing something, enemy attack trajectories helping to keep track of what big enemy groups are doing, and boss battles being more than "mash square to win with the occasional super" to win as it actually rewards parries handsomely.

I cannot defend this, and it really does come back to my biggest issue with Renewal - it's very clearly an Estival mod. It plays better than Estival, yet it still retains a bit of its hallmark stiffness despite fixing 90% of what was outstandingly wrong with that game. That remaining 10% still sort of stinks up the room but at least it's not SO bad this time around.

Burst is completely different from everything afterward, completely being arcade-like. SV and DC are in between EV/Re:Newal and Burst. but for completely different reasons. SV is 3D but stills resemble Burst in being simple but fast. DC is close to Burst but slows in down a bit while adding more to do.
The lacking selection still looks meh.
