Roguelikes

I just recently got into UnReal World and I never played many "roguelikes", I'm not really familiar with the genre but I enjoyed the finnish autism simulator. Are there any other classics of the genre I should check out? Good graphics are obviously welcome but not a must since I'm okay with UnReal world as well.

Well, as far as roguelikes go, this is an unconventional one. Usually they are all about dungeon crawls with complex mechanics. I personally like Infra Arcana, also I'll give shoutouts to Cogmind and Caves of Qud. Cataclism DDA is pretty involved survival roguelike, so you might check it out, but instead of suomi forest you get much less hostile setting of all the possible end of the world scenarios happening at the same day: zombies, aliens, triffids - you name it.

Elona+. There's usually an Elona general on /jp/ so go check there

>tfw no fun roguelike to play with all these item descriptions

>classic roguelikes
Besides rogue itself, nethack is the big one. If you're too casual for that, Dungeons of Dredmor is a good 'starting' point for roguelikes but be warned it isn't nearly as deep as most roguelikes are.

Would you recommend Tales of Maj'Eyal? I'm going to check out Cataclysm for now it seems interesting enough.

second post best post

>jap shit
nah

darkest dungeon
>but its not roguelike
yes it is you fucking idiot, permadeath, incremental difficulty and you get to keep the upgrades from your failed runs

I was about to bitch at you for using a graphics set instead of glyph-based one but that graphics set looks good. It communicates information clearly enough to the player about what everything is.

>you get to keep the upgrades from your failed runs
That's what makes it NOT roguelike, because that means it's NOT true permadeath.
A roguelike requires 3 of the following 4 things:
Procedural generation, Tiles-based, Turn-based, Permadeath.
Procedural generation and Turn-based are present, but Permadeath isn't. Your characters die. You as the player and manor manager do not, and you keep items between the runs.

Check the ADoM. It's a classic roguelike and is extremely good one. It even got a resumed development couple of years ago and got very nice graphics.

>Nethack
Go down a dungeon, grab an amulet and ascend to godhood. It’s probably the best known example of the genre and you should try it out just for the sake of genre knowledge.
>ADOM
The other big classic one. Unlike Nethack that takes place in one dungeon, ADOM is larger and more sprawling game that features an overworld and a ticking timer with spreading corruption. It’s hard as fuck especially if you want the best endings, but I still like it more than Nethack. Also, has a Steam version that has some visual polish to make it more approachable.
>Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
A newer, more approachable roguelike, that cuts down on fat and makes the game somewhat easier to start with, yet it still can be hard as fuck when it wants to. Honestly, it’s probably the first place where I would start with the genre, it doesn’t feel like beating your head on a brick wall at first, yet it still is hard and involving enough that it doesn’t feel too dumbed down.

ToME

I'll get it, it seems to never go on sale though?

I think it was 10% max and developer said it won't ever go lower.

Yeah, so I might as well buy it and not wishlist and wait. Thanks for the recommendation.

it has a few of the trappings of Rogue but plays absolutely nothing like it, therefore it is not a roguelike, also you don't keep shit in Rogue you fucking mong read a book

One recommendation, don't hesitate to read some guides\spoilers after you get used to the game. It's a game from older era after all and it doesn't explain much stuff to you. Knowing a general starting direction and quest order will save you a lot of time.

How is Delver? Considering getting it on the steam sale

Nobody's gonna say Angband? I liked angband the best. And the impossibly difficult Steamband for steampunk hilarity

we are talking about roguelikes here not the original rogue game, there are absolutely tiles in DD, modern rogue likes include progression you keep into your next run, permadeath is present for the characters you control not "your character" from the lore standpoint and that is what matters

I remember poschengband, it was so boring

Also, ignore the roguelite = roguelike nigger
