Left has more detail, but right has a more dynamic pose and a much more distinct and interesting silhouette. I like the right one because of it.

The only advantage left has is the depth of shading, but not even necessarily the QUALITY of shading. Right conveys more depth and shape than left does with fewer colors.
Right also conveys FAR more "tension" and "energy" than left. She looks like she's ready for a real fight, while left looks like she's just going through the motions and imitating a battle pose.

Left doesn't look bad but the rendering and efficiency is far better on the right. Obviously the left has a wider palette range and intends to show more detail, but at this quality, the right can likely benefit smoother, more expressive animation, and won't be a pain to compose. Also despite being a simpler palette, right has clearer leg muscles definition, and a cooler pose.

Fuck no. The simple colors and lack of clear gradation lead to everything blending together. If you wanted to make an action game with sprites like this, it'd end up looking like garbage unless you made the sprites gigantic. There's a reason 2D beat em ups back in the day had fairly good spritework.

You know what you're talking about. All other sprites being simple 3 color blobs would look truly hideous. The entire thing would feel weightless, it's what makes games like dust force so unpleasant visually. It feels like something cheaply made and with minimal effort.
