Sorry user, but the first one is awful. Floating goombas move incredibly unpredictably and you pretty much just flooded the course with them, occasionally making them required for progression, which is a nightmare with how finicky they are.
Are there guides/videos on what makes a good Mario Maker level. I don't want to make boring, ugly or bullshit-difficulty levels.

When you start the game for the first time you're given the option to begin the tutorials. Afterwards you can access Yamamura's dojo at any time for general or specific lessons in course design.
Watching the videos in Yamamura's Dojo goes a long way in pointing you in the right direction when making. I'd start there before watching anything else.
There's an entire tutorial that shows what makes a good or bad level.

I don't understand, floating Goombas float in place until Mario gets close and then they move towards him. The goombrats are the only ones that move unpredictably and I went light on them and didn't require them at all for progression. Thanks for the feedback though, I do feel like it got weak near the end
2 mario games are boring to play. Most of the 3d ones are boring too. I only liked Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. Galaxy and Odyssey were boring.

Trying to stop the shell, as it was bouncing from side to side, took me two tries. And was annoying having to redo the level to that point.
I also accidentally managed to destroy the mushroom. Or hit a note block myself, screwing myself out of the puzzle.
Just a lot of soft-lock potential in general, is what I'm getting at.
Which parts are too tough? Thinking about a revision. Yeah the leading thing I was iffy on. I wanted to have goombrats flood out of the pipe and Mario run out but they were too random. And flying Goombas came out too quick and felt unfair. Just didn't know what else to put there really
The problem is that they only move towards him when he's about 1-2 blocks away. And they'll often go a bit diagonally in a random fashion. This makes jumps requiring them a huge pain, because you might assume they'll zig but they actually zag and you die. Add multiple goombas moving unpredictably in this way and it's a recipe for no fun to be had.

My first course, tried to make it so the level was somewhat synced to the music. I ate up a lot of my level real estate early, but I learned a lot from making this, will definitely try levels like this in the future.
I hope Nintendo lets you disable the gimmicks that night mode causes
You can keep them there, but have another upwards pipe poop out some big goombas to platform on after that cp.
Maybe revise the flagpole room and make it less stressful to platform (ie no erratic small goomba jumps) as well.
Overall it was quite fun at the beginning but falls apart once you start having to do the jumps with them without a failsafe unlike the first half.
There is a builder hammer in the first tree on the left, but only if you've grabbed the first mushroom from the start area. There's another as well in the multiple vertical tree section, same deal.
It's there for speedrunners/secret hunters, rewards you for not getting hit.

One thing is some win condition like “collect x stars” just wont allow checkpoint, so those stages need to be concise and not too drawn out
user, I might be slightly retarded but I got stuck at your second room. Maybe I don't understand the full capabilities of the POW block. Maybe I'm not dexterous enough to make the Trampoline jump. Maybe I'm not making full use of the Thwomps. But my low IQ can't quite solve Room 2.

there is a hard reset right before the check point but i do have extra hidden blocks that allow you to get to the check point.
I also do have a single fat hammer bro or you can take the other path that is focused on platforming.
Honestly I'm not even sure if it could be salvaged. I spent about 40 seconds trying to get the little bastards to follow me at the first red pipe where they were required to get up. Big goombas can only help so much.
Goombas still float in other night themes, don't they? Maybe you should make it a sky level so you have low gravity, making it less of a pain to land on them. You'd have to redesign some of the course, though.
Hammer bros are less of a threat if placed on some high elevation.

I wanted to slowly take away the failsafe but I'm thinking now I ripped it out too quick at the end. Maybe I'll make the big jumping challenge have a floor with pipes that respawn the Goombas. Flag room will probably have only a few giant Goombas with no floor as a final victory lap check
Not gonna lie, I'm surprised you didn't get past the second room. Maybe you just don't know this but you're able to put pows on springs and be able to walk on them. I tried putting hints there but I guess it wasn't clear enough

Nina and Yamamura make a great duo. Also you can tell thay the core team behind the Mario games are using these two to deliver their design philosophy. Note how they prioritize "fun" over "difficult and challenging", but somehow without condemning the latter.

I really hope they add message blocks in an update. Many of my course ideas would benefit a lot from adding text in the level for narration or hints.

Is there an easy way to have a thwomp set an on/off switch to ON whenever it's triggered? The only ways I can think of either have flaws to them (the toggle blocks reappear and kill the thwomp, breaking the mechanism) or are uncomfortably complex (the thwomp can only move when the switch is set to off, and it moving opens room for a lit bobomb to spawn in, who blows up the on/off switch).
It doesn't feel like it should be that difficult a process, but I can't figure it out.
I really don't understand what the point of them is if you can't use them like 3D World. The entire reason they're clear is so you know when to change direction

I’ve seen about a million low quality boss fight levels designed while playing Expert and Super Expert so I decided to take a crack at making a “good” one myself. And yes they’re actually difficult and have to be done in one run, in fact I probably should have netfed the Bully + Lava Fish fight more, those fish can are assholes.

I think I'm a decent Mario player but not great, but seeing these low clear rates on levels that are about Nintendo difficulty is painful. Makes you wonder why people even ask for harder Mario games when the statistics show they can barely handle it.
It's the fire spitting piranha plants you may be thinking of. if you need some help, ducking in the center can trivialize the cheep-cheep portion a lot, and can help when dealing with the fire plants too; just be ready to react
I'd like some advice regarding the level i posted here:
Do you think it might have been a mistake to allow players to reset the room upon failure, rather than forcing them to die? This might end up boosting the clear rate too much and cause the level to be recommended to players that have no hope to beat it. This in turn would cause the level to get boos instead of likes.

I think he means that the obstacles have to come together in a way. Mario levels don't work well by just throwing in a whole bunch of ideas together, It all has to build up to something. I like making stages by limiting myself to just a few course parts. Makes for a more cohesive and satisfying experience.
I guess the best way to put it is to compare Mario levels to a book. There's an introduction to your gimmick, some further building on that gimmick, a twist on it and a climax. It rises and falls in a way.

Help the mole escape his former home in time. The concept sounded a lot more fun in my head but I didn't realize moles can barely interact with any objects compared to other enemies so I had to scrap a few ideas, uploaded it anyway because I spent way too long on it. Definitely going to experiment with seesaws and claws in the near future, maybe a factory escort level or something.
The thing is that I went back and modified it to kind of build off a few ideas and get a bit more difficult over time. The whole stage centers around some pretty simple obstacles and around the hat at keeping it to make the end easier.
I suppose I could've split it up into a few stages or cut some of the fat but the ideas just kept flowing.

I always put a small challenge in getting the mushroom at any checkpoint. Mainline Mario games typically do the same thing. Removing the minor challenge would remove the point of the contraption, anyways.

Yes. But people being bad doesn't mean it's too hard. Anyone with a brain would realize the shell is going to come back, a full jump is more than enough to get over it even if you don't predict the conveyor belts screwing with the speed. Every friend of mine I've given the level to said it's already too easy, I don't want to make it moreso.
I don't really agree user, I think if most of the players are dying to that point then it should be changed even if those players are clearly shitters - since your level is intended to be an easy course it makes little sense that the most threatening part of the course is getting trying to obtain that mushroom

Bit Crusade 3 is the sequel to the two full games (1-1 to 8-4) I created within Mario Maker 1, reminiscent of traditional Mario levels. Meant to be played in sequence as an adventure game, starting at the 1-1. There's secrets to find, alternative pathways and other goodies as well. Try to find all 5 Power Pepperonis hidden in each stage to access the super secret bonus room at the end of each level.

There's a block with a mushroom after every section and there are 2 Checkpoints in the level. C'mon, it's managable.
Less than 1% clear rate is to be expected of anything you could call hard. I took the kiddie gloves off for one second and the course has under 5% clear rate and countless complaining comments at the checkpoint.

Alright, you seem to be improving quite a bit. I got some SMB3 vibes from the whole thing, which is fine in my book. Elements feel better spaced out and you got some nice risk-reward elements going on which is always good. Only real thing I could mention is it felt a little too short but I imagine you were already going up against the screen limit.
Also minor nitpick but Galoombas are the green-shoed round dudes, the Goomba variants that are red and don't walk off ledges are Goombrats. Deep Mario lore.

Thanks, means a lot as I was trying to take previous feedback into consideration where a few anons told me the courses felt cramped at times. I wasn't anywhere close to the screen limit, I intended it to be a short level as it was initially a lot harder but after toning it way down (perhaps too much so) I didn't have further ideas that felt up to the standard of the rest of the level. There are the optional areas at least, did you get the 3 big coins?

You know I actually like endless mode. Coins actually have a functional purpose now with how everyone starts out with limited lives now. Also gives course makers a reason to put them in their stages along with the various big coin amounts hidden around the stages.

first play through it seems like it's just harder than it should be, that first hammer bro in particular is clearly placed so that he'll always take at least one life off of someone. A Mushroom somewhere near the start would go a long way to making the level feel better.
On my second playthrough i realized the level was pretty fun to try and speedrun once i knew where things were ahead of time.
Got a pretty good WR on it after several tries.

Yeah, I've been told that before. I guess I underestimated how difficult the level could be. I thought it was easy but that's probably because I made it. I believe the hammer bro always throws three hammers and then jumps. You're right though, I probably could have given a mushroom earlier on.
