Dark Souls was genre-defining in that, in a lot of normie eyes, it was the first big "super-difficult" game that you could get nerd cred for having beaten, so people keep talking about it and going back to it because the zoomers who first played it when it was hyped up also keep talking about it and setting it as a standard for difficulty when in reality you just have to play it differently because it doesn't baby you as hard as other games that released around that time did.
